My best friend had a sleep paralysis episode in which he witnessed a shadow figure in his room. The next night, the shadow figure returned, but he could move. Light repels it. I need advice.

Next time choose a sane friend.

We've yet to rule out schizophrenia...

Turn on lights.

He says that he wants to be able to sleep normally, i.e. without leaving the lights on at night all the time

Tell him to throw salt over his shoulder before he goes to sleep, and put a little pepper on the pillow too.

Cool. He's catholic, and there's crucifixes in the house and in the room, if that resolves anything
Stop sleeping on your back and stop freaking out as soon as you realize you can't move. Exploring lucid dreaming may help.
I've had episodes of SP with neutral and even positive presences because I chose to stay calm. It's only the boundary between dreams and reality, if you bring negativity it will reflect that.

Pretty much, the interval between dream states render your body inmobile wjile your mind it's still concious.
This it's achieved by remaining awake but perfectly still for a lapse.
explore lucid dreaming to be able to go in and out of the state by yourself.
This happened to me when I was on a SSRI, spooky shit
Yeah I agree. Don't freak out, just keep calm, and you'll be fine. Just remember it's all in the head.
But continue sleeping on your back, it's good for your posture.

Banish. Use light in banishment. Andrieh Vitimus had a similar experience.
