practice meditation, see for yourself. Both buddhism and other similar religions are all about trascending ego, so don't cherish too much your idea of "belonging" to the religion. Just practice, read sutras, koans and what not, but don't mistake the "rites" with the "gods". All truth comes from within. Have patience, see where it takes you

Try reading Ajahn Brahm books online or you can find suttas easily through google. As for living a peaceful life, it really depends on your attitude, lifestyle and mindset. Buddhism is about training your mind to be calm peaceful in life and with others, not converting others to join our way of life. Hope this helps bro, you don't have to be Buddhist to practise the Dhamma even Christians or Atheists can practise the noble eightfold path.
