13,000 Victorian jam jars unearthed in London

A total of more than 13,000 pots and jars were recovered from what is believed to be an old vault in which Crosse and Blackwell, which had maintained a factory at the site until 1921, was thought to have once dumped large quantities of its unwanted stock. Described by The Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) as "remarkable", the discovery includes everything from jars of jam and marmalade to pots of Piccalilli and Mushroom Catsup.

The items were found inside a large cistern beneath the site where the Elizabeth line station in Tottenham Court Road is currently being constructed.

"Excavations on Crosse and Blackwell's Soho factory produced a large and diverse collection of pottery and glass related to their products, with one cistern alone containing nearly three tons of Newcastle made marmalade jars with stoneware bottles and jars," said archaeologist Nigel Jeffries. "We think this is the biggest collection of pottery ever discovered in a single feature from an archaeological site in London."

Scientists find way to regrow decayed teeth

While our teeth are already capable of regenerating new dentine if the pulp becomes exposed due to physical damage or infection, the amount produced is typically very small, making it insufficient to fill the large cavities caused by tooth decay and other common dental problems. Now though, researchers at King's College London have discovered that an existing Alzheimer's drug called Tideglusib is capable of stimulating the stem cells within the pulp in to producing more dentine by switching off the enzyme GSK-3 which stops it from forming. The scientists even succeeded in demonstrating this technique by soaking a biodegradable sponge in the drug and inserting it in to the tooth cavity of a volunteer patient. After about six weeks the sponge had disintegrated and the cavity had completely filled in.

"The simplicity of our approach makes it ideal as a clinical dental product for the natural treatment of large cavities, by providing both pulp protection and restoring dentine," said Professor Paul Sharpe. "In addition, using a drug that has already been tested in clinical trials for Alzheimer's disease provides a real opportunity to get this dental treatment quickly into clinics."

Child born with two heads in Mexico, dies hours later

State officials in the Mexican state of Chihuahua confirmed the birth of a baby with two heads after video of the crying children was shared online by relatives. Born in the city of Ciudad Juarez on January 6th and sharing the same organs from the neck down, authorities have declined to confirm the sex of the twins, the mother’s name or whether the parents were aware of their children’s condition before delivery, saying they want to preserve the family's privacy and only confirming that the mother is in "good health."

Jesus Urrutia, the director of Clinic 35 at the Mexican Institute of Social Security who cared for the tots, confirmed the death and said he would not comment any further. Doctors said they were looking at a "plan going forward" for the babies before they sadly died.

Antibiotic spider silk now a reality

After five years of work, scientists in the UK have found a way to create synthetic spider silk that's loaded with antibiotic properties, and could help deliver drugs and close open wounds with a decreased risk of infection. The new material takes silk, which is synthesised from E. coli bacteria, and adheres molecules to its structure, infusing it with different substances that make for a better bandage.

While it might seem odd, spider silk is actually a pretty incredible material when it comes to first aid. It’s biocompatible, biodegradable, protein-based, and it isn’t known to cause any sort of immune, inflammatory or allergic reactions.

The team says that using spider silk as wound dressing goes all the way back to the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans, who used the material to dress the wounds of soldiers to stop bleeding. This process usually involved soldiers using a honey-vinegar mixture as an antiseptic to keep the wound clean, and then wrapping it in wads of spider silk to keep it safe.

The team basically took this idea and modernised it with new technology. Instead of using real spider silk, they made their own by synthesising strands from E. coli bacteria in the lab. Once they had that procedure down pat, they discovered that they could ‘decorate’ the silk by covering it with antibiotic levofloxacin, a drug commonly used for treating bacterial infections.
