The show is a total mess (in a good way) and nothing is really explained. The writers just made shit up as they went on.
Want an example? They wanted a creepy intro song, so they ended up with a deep voice singing random sentences in Latin they remembered from school.

Sadly, it remaind unfinished. They wanted to shoot another season after some years, but several of the main actors died.
