The funny thing is that this seems to happen instantly after death, because you don't experience any time while you have no consciousness.

The next life could really be anything, instead of a "rebirth" the chemicals might very well converge into an alien having a DMT trip, or God creating the universe, or - warning, scary idea inbound - yourself living life backwards after the universe bounces back.
