Um I think the tech is relatively simple- it just uses programs that record open spaces and depth in your environment through your camera and puts images over them. The rest is just a game.

Though Im not much of a tech wiz, that's just what I gathered.

This. Any true functional AR is at least 7 years away. The issue is display integration. The bets and easiest way to achieve what they're going for is through a wearable like Google Glass but we all saw how that movie ended. No one wants to wear bullshit like that. Not even if it meant spoopy games. The idea of VR however is a much worse idea but is so ingrained in our collective technological interest because of movies like The Lawnmower Man. Now if we'd had more movies like Minority Report, that's the train we'd be on. But that's not the case. So instead of simple and effective AR glasses we have cumbersome and barely usable VR tech like the Gear VR. Have you ever tried it? I owned the dev edition when I had my note 4. Outside of the theater environments for movies it was unusable.
