Geology Major here. Those are not trees. Those are buttes and volcanic necks. Basically for the buttes, the top layer is some weather resistant sed rock that has held up over the years while around it (limestone or shale) eroded away rapidly. As for the volcanic necks, basically a bunch of magma gets trapped and solidifies in the neck of the volcano. The outer shell of the volcano erodes away and all that is left is the weather resistant core. Ancient super trees would be more cool, but it's just not the case.
