alright friend. i've taken 6 years of art history and they teach you this in the first semester of any ancient art class: ancient humans had weird ass ways of conveying status and context through anthropomorphic depictions. the biggest example of this is hierarchical scale- pic related.

this is a scene depicting a pharoh named nebamum hunting. it's from about 1400 BCE. you see how he's huge compared to the other humans? they played with scale to convey symbolically the status of these people. the tiniest man is a servant, the middlest man is a scribe/priest.

now obviously not every single figural form has purely symbolic skin color. and not every culture has the same perspective on what makes someone "black" or "white"- our distinctions on race are pretty modern (couple hundred years or so, depending on who you ask.) we find similar confusing conventions in art from ancient greece/tuscany, asia, etc.
