Savage critique of sci-fi and fantasy. The book within the book is a novel written by a failed German artist named Adolf Hitler who moved to the United States instead of pursuing politics.

I vaguely remember a novel (i think german in origin) where there's a giant dragon looking over the city and there's absotuletly horrendous crimes going on in the city and some guy investigates this. Anyone knows what I'm talking about?
>>
>>18373012
sounds interesting, do you have any context as to what the dragon is doing? just observing? is the guy investigating the dragon or the atrocities?
>>
>>18373022
I never finished the book that's why I want to find it. I think it's German in origin, I'm really not sure about this though. There's mention of the Rhine river throughout the book also.

I think in the story the dragon doesn't do much as he's been there a while. I don't remember the connection with the crimes but I guess eventually that's where the novel is going. (I'm guessing his presence is causing all the hysteria )
>>
>>18373030
do you remember the setting? contemporary or historical of fantasy/ futuristic?
>>
>>18373040
Fantasy/ ''historic'' as in it's going on in the 1600's I would be guessing. There's lot of anachronisms in the book but the geography seems right (I think there's maps in the book).

This book is so /x/. Don't go in expecting some disturbing, cosmic horror. It's a crazy blend of sci-fi, shadow conspiracy, drug use, and parody. It's not outside the realm of John Dies at the End, but is definitely 20x weirder.

Any short story by collection by Laird Barron or Thomas Ligotti. They're both heirs to Lovecraft.
Barron is Lovecraft with a set of balls and Ligotti is Lovecraft with even more hate for humanity and the world.
Avoid their novellas. Neither are good long form writers, sadly.

Yes, I thought so, but I read it a long time ago. It's definitely not a novel or a single entertaining contained story like the movie. It's more like a collection of information surrounding the incident and some of the author's theories explaining things like the nature of this kind of phenomenon, possible causes, and how people react to this stuff. I think it's something everyone on /x/ should at least read for the sake of insight.

If you're into short story collections, then this one is really, really, *really* worth the money. The book is colossal, about 1100 huge-sized double column pages, and has an absolutely fantastic collection of works from a huge variety of authors. There's a few translations of stories that have been specifically commissioned for the collection, as well as a wide variety of stuff you most definitely have not read before.

I met him recently, cool guy. I do like his novellas, The Broadsword reminded me of a written version of Jacob's Ladder.
>>
>>18377207
I actually got it, and I like it, but many of the pieces are just weird and not always horror (in a Lovecraftian sense). Some are supposed to be funny. Just a little false marketing, but still a good book.
>>
>>18373379
What Laird Barron does is mix cosmic horror but presents it in a hardboiled prose. I can't believe no ones done that before but it's genius.

Also check out his friend John Langan, he's written some good stories.

Don't get me wrong. I like his novellas too. They're just not very good. He's a beast when it comes to short stories, but still improving when it comes to longer pieces. I believe he'll nail it in time.
>>
>>18379828
I'm a lefty, but Mr. & Mrs. VanderMeer are a little too SJW for me. The Weird includes several shitty writers because they needed to pad it with women and non-Westerners. That's all well and good, so long as the authors are truly writing within the weird genre (they're not all doing so).
Jeff VanderMeer also pretends like he hasn't read Lovecraft, which makes me furious.
Nice collection overall. Well worth it.

I agree with you about the Vandermeer stuff. Its a little overtly political sometimes, which is annoying. Maybe I was a little over-enthusiastic when I made the post, but its got some fantastic stories in there. The Beak Doctor, Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass, and The Other Side of the Mountain in particular really stuck with me.

For other Vandermeer stuff, I did read Finch and the Southern Reach trilogy. Finch is a little amateurish, but the SR trilogy comes across much better. It's still just glorified Stalker fanfiction, but its well executed for someone who has nowhere near the writing chops of M. John Harrison.

I just thought of this and don't know where to put it, but anyone who loves /x/ shit should really read Metro 2033. The sequel sucks, but the original book is filled with such weird shit and has this enthusiasm that makes it a really fun read.

Pic related is a nice little short story collection I picked up. It runs pretty close to what you'd expect from Laird Barron, though I think some great little moments in the stories made me enjoy reading it.
>>
>>18380718
Southern Reach Trilogy was fantastic. I like VanderMeer the writer way more than VanderMeer the editor.

I have the same copy, it's my favorite book after I Am Legend. Words can't describe how much I love it.
>>
>>18377888
there is an actual story line in that it's "fiction" he built around the subject. it's not amazing and it's kind of christfaggy if that triggers you. it all makes sense. the weird parts of the story were way more compelling to me in ~2008-9 when i read it and there was way less stuff about reptilians polluting the airwaves. it would probably not be that amazing now if i read it. also whitely has a huge mary-sue/self insertion. I don't know if he does this in every book. i've only read this and communion.

For a first-time authors short story collection, I was very pleasantly surprised. Like I said before, there's a big Laird Barron influence, with the obligatory Lovecraft as well. Its definitely worth a read.

I loved metro2033, I also read 2034 and 2035, I enjoyed all of them but the weird stuff in the first one, I loved it. Really a shame he decided not to keep it a bit more weird and less "omg giant conspiracy"
>>
I started reading Furnace by Livia Llewellyn, I'm not sure I like it. The Lovecraft influence is definitely there. I only read 3 stories, sometimes she writes too much like poetry and the end always feels unfinished, not in a good way, like she just didnt know how to continue so she ends things in a rushed way. I dont even remember how I found out about her actually.
