The Tunnel

I didn't think it was all that scary but almost nothing does, but the atmosphere was great and the subject matter was fun and interesting.

The found footage element helps it somewhat.

It's cheesy at times and replay zoom ins can be annoying, but fuck it's one of my all time favourite j-horror flicks.
>>
>>18369710
First 2 yes. Never watched Antichrist. 10 minutes was enough for me.

The Poltergeist (original)
Pet Cemetary
Hellraiser
Mirrors

Stephen Kings "IT" is the scariest movie I've ever seen, but watching it now its' not that scary. Some 80's/90's horrors didn't age well.
>>
>>18370388
Hellraiser 2 was even scarier.

The Exorcist and The Ring 2 scariest of all times.

is a horror movie hipster someone who doesnt share your taste in horror movies or what? because i thought the conjuring sucked but only because demons arent scary and all tales of possession are fake and gay. i can get into a horror movie if it seems plausible, the best ones have an element of believability to them....demon possession movies arent even remotely plausible imo.

It's still the most scared I've been watching a movie.

You bascially desensitized yourself to the horror movie format.
It's not the movies themselves, it's that you've seen so many that your brain doesn't give a shit anymore if they're supposed to be scary or not since you know you'll make it through the movie just fine.
Docs are literally the next step, if you get desensitized to them, then only going into a spooky house by yourself will give you the unease you search for.

It's pretty shitty that our brains work that way. In theory you could show someone the scariest movie they'll ever see and everything after that will mean almost nothing to them.

thats not necessarily true. Ive watched scary movies since I was a little kid and I still can find some ones that genuinely scare me, you just have to get creative
I cant watch "slashers" anymore and have always found them to be more jump scare fun then legitimately scary. You cant say hollywood shoveling them same half assed carbon copies of horror movies in the past few years hasnt watered down the whole genre either

>>
ju-on: the grudge 2 fucked me up

especially the megumi scene and the kayako scene

kayako, covered in blood, makes that horrific death rattle noise with a demon-ish version of it added as well, making jerky movements as she slowly approaches the screen and fully covers it.

that was enough to traumatize me for the first time ever, and i've seen 300+ horror movies.

probably not the best idea to watch it at 5am by myself with the lights turned off and with headphones on

it's honestly the only horror movie i refuse to watch again by myself

>>18379384
I feel like it could be similar to The Descent, or The Tunnel. Maybe it could be found footage too to capture the realism. Sorta like As Above So Below.

I'm sure they could do an adaption to fit the ending, since the site's end was him writing he's going back with the friend and he never returns.

Maybe he could make video diaries instead of site posts? And the last entry could have him leave the cam and it says "Ted was never seen again. His whereabouts are unknown. The location of the cave has never been found."

Something like that. Or he could venture down into the cave for the last time and his helmet cam gets knocked off, and it's left there for the entire credits. And the only quote that displays at the end, before the credits, is "There are some places man was never meant to go", faded out to this song.

That's basically every horror movie from the 50s to the 90s.

Vacancy is the only horror movie I've watched recently that's fucked me up. Martyrs was decent but the ending seemed contrived.

Dark Water (think it was Japanese or Korean), The Host, Suspiria, Eraserhead, The Exorcist, and Night of the Living Dead all deserve mentioning.

the original Nosferatu by F.W. Murnau is one of my all time favourites, but the version I saw back in the day had a piano soundtrack that added to the atmosphere. the version I have on my HDD is rather different. worth watching nonetheless.

not sure if it's really considered horror but Irreversible was pretty good.

this is, without a shadow of a doubt, the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life

every single cliche in the book is present in it, which is ironic because the jerk off who directed it proudly stated that there are none in his creation

it starts with telling us the two retards got killed which kills any suspese,we know they're gonna die from the get go,and since they're so unlikeable and the film is so boring you'll find yourself waiting for the killers to finish them off just so this travesty can end

I'll never understand how people found this scary. The monster, while being inventive at least, wasn't a real threat at all. The thing could only walk, so why am I supposed to be afraid of it? I was surprised how much I like Woman in Black.

First I'd heard of the story was the stage play in London.
A horror theatrical production you say? Yeah, I think it's the only one (watch it if you get the chance).

Then I read the book a few years later, listened to the audio drama and then eventually saw the TV movie that has that one fantastical scene in the graveyard at the house where Kipps sees the woman seeing him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1hun4jaY5g

I love this scene. If you've ever felt that feeling of being watched you'll "get it".

Upon hearing that there was to be new film adaptation made, by a revitalised Hammer Studios no less, I was fucking stoked.

There were some bits I didn't like if I were to nitpick, but even Radcliffe surprised me, as I thought, going into it, that I wouldn't be able to distinguish the actor (aka "Harry potter guy") from the character the actor was playing, but I managed it because he 'became' Kipps. He sold me on his character and not once did I see him as "oh it's the harry potter guy trying to do something else".

Knowing the story as well as I did at that stage, when it was building up to the time where the protag was to stay the night the dread was building up to a fever pitch for me and I was not, ultimately, disappointed.

But seriously, if you ever get the chance to watch the stage play, do it.
>>
>>18377498
>>18389150
Besides these things, the dissonance between them hunting for the guy that passed it to the girl protag in the first place, the guy from the beginning, and then tracking him down at his house and then cut scene to them all having a fucking picknick in the park all chummy, instead of beating the shit out of him or whatever, was odd for me to say the least.

I'm not too fond of this film, but it had a certain air about it, a certain and distinct (from my recollection) ambiance.

If you're a fan of this classic, then give "Shadow of the Vampire" (or something) a watch. Can't remember the exact title. It has John Malkovich playing Murnau himself filming Nosferatu as the film's about him trying to get the film made. The catch is that he got a real vampire to play Count Orlock.

It's not great, just a fun thing to watch.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

There's one decent horror movie (out of the 3 I know of) that has come out of my country:

Shutter.

Please please please watch the original Thai version subbed and not the American remake. You do yourself and the story a disservice otherwise. Compare the american grudge to the orignal japanese.

It's got some good spooks in it, and the concept itself was creepy and novel at the time, especially if you're a /p/hagtographer. I heartily recommend it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nwy8QSQliGk

Trailer's not so good, but I promise the film is decent.

As for the other two scariest films to come out of this place: one I can't find because it's out of print (but that one I've been told is scarier to a Thai or someone living here than it would be to others elsewhere for some reason anyway) and the other I downright refuse to watch because I'm too much of a fucking puss puss.

It was filmed, on location, at one of the Killing Fields in Cambodia.

If you haven't the faintest idea what that means and why a movie filmed there is beyond fucked up then I suggest you do a little reading on Cambodian modern history and prepare yourself for a dark journey into man's complete and utter inhumanity to man. It would be like filming a movie at a Nazi concentration camp site. What happened in Cambodia is not really taught in most world history curricula. It's fucked, though.

Don't read about this shit before you sleep or when you're alone. The tales of cruelty will be too much for the idle mind to stomach so close to resting peaceful time.

Don't even know what the film's called lol. Trailer scared me too much.

Don't mess with Cambodian black magic or Cambodian spooks, so the local sentiment is; that shit is scary and potent.
>>

On Korean Horror:

K-horror's really been a thing this past decade, because it's GOOD.

Two I like a lot:

Train to Busan - A recent (2016) film. Zombies are getting a little stale, but despite this, this film manages to make a fresh tale. It is relentless and will leave you tired. Set in Korea, it deals with a sudden Zombie outbreak and survivors stuck on a movie train. Like I said, relentless and it will leave you almost out of breath.

R-Point - I have a hard on for Military Horror. There's just something about the idea about groups of soldiers, highly trained, truly physical individuals armed and trained to take on anything, dealing with something that all their training and experience could not possibly prepare them for: the supernatural.

It's one thing to watch a film about some dumb, oblivious suburban protagonist feebly fend off the machinations of some supernatural threat and watching such men of action facing it (and, usually, failing).

Film's set during the Vietnam war, where a squad of South Korean troops part of the Korean effort to support the Americans in that conflict are sent on a mission to an island off the coast of Vietnam and to the "R-Point", a region of minor strategic importance with little Vietnamese resistance where a Korean detachment was supposed to have been wiped out, with only one survivor who has been reduced to a crazed wreck, 6 months before.

The new squad is being sent because high command keeps receiving creepy as fuck radio transmissions from this supposedly wiped out detachment, begging for reinforcements.

It has its flaws, but like with all genre fiction and especially horror, suspension of disbelief keeps you going.

The flaws, overall, can be overlooked as the film has some creepy shit going on, none lesser than the backdrop and locations: decayed french colonial buildings, tropical swamps and forests etc.

Good shit.

You can watch Shutter, R-Point, Train to Busan easily these days via stream or whatever.

>>
>>18396538
Damn, I almost wished I never remembered it lol, but not for any reason you'd imagine. Just looked it up.

The scariest stories are those you can only half remember, because your own mind, that generator of the darkest nightmares possible, fills in the blanks and can make something genuinely crappy or laughable into something truly terrifying.

The childhood nostalgia effect and say, watching IT is a prime example of this phenomenon.

I for one couldn't watch Hellraiser for nearly 15 years because of half-glimpses of it while it was on TV when I was a kid. When I got around to it I was kinda (thankfully) a little let down (though not by much - fuck I can't watch that shit again) because the film I had built in my mind was so much more terrifying than the actual 90 or so minutes actually filmed.

Anyway, long story short: the Cambodian film never existed, not in the way I thought that is. A film was made, but it was made here in Thailand and NOT in Cambodia and the set was made to replicate a site there (MUCH to the consternation of the Cambodians). The producers wanted to film on location but were, quite rightly so, not allowed.

I honestly had my doubts that any Thai actor would agree to filming something in such a place anyway, nor the film crew decide to work in such a place. There's description we have here that translates, literally to "white eyes" - means scaredy cat; like, eyes wide open in terror. We are mostly like this here lol. It's what you get for being taught since birth that there are spirits in the trees and everywhere.

So this thread finally got me to look it up and it turns out the film wasn't what I thought, and is kinda crappy.
Even the trailer I saw in the theatres all those years ago, or rather, at least, my half *recollection* of it, makes it out to be way scarier than it actually turned out to be.

Sorry to get your hopes up; just poor info and my imagination filling in the blanks

Tl;dr shit film, don't bother.
>>
>>18396611
It's this film. btw:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La-Tha-Pii

So much for that, eh?

The only other option now is the one I was recommended not to watch, that I couldn't find anyway. Deals with some local folklore, local spooks.

In english it's called:
The Unseeable.

Thing is, there's more than one version I think. Like, there's remake and an original.

It has that nostalgia feel about it, for me anyway, as it is set in the 1930's in thailand.
Feels like the old thai movies I grew up seeing, but it's supposedly terrifying.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKg35cY4GhQ

Forgive me for not vetting this trailer as it is after all 1:25am where I am and I can already hear noises in the roof (maybe squirrels, maybe rats, maybe a snake eating a rat eating a squirrel, or maybe some other shit), and I'd actually like to be able to sleep tonight.

Like I said, "white eyes" puss puss lmao.

My issue with this movie is so small that it pisses me off. It was actually a great movie except for the guy they cast as the forensics guy that watched the tapes and went on about how he couldn't touch his wife after. Absolutely terrible acting. Like high school drama class level bad. Takes me out of the movie every time

>speaking of soldiers in horror, that was done quite well in Dog Soldiers imo. have you seen it?
I've been saving it for a special occasion.
I watched the first half but was interrupted and have been putting it off ever since. Not because it's bad, but I just have to get back in the mood for it. Perhaps this weekend. When I have friends over and am not alone (like now - or am I?)

More military horror that's good:

Deathwatch:
Set in WW1, so that's a nice change. As if things couldn't get more horrific, right? Good film. Disturbing imagery. Great story.
Set in the aftermath of some of some big battle in WW1, a squad of british troops get separated and lost in the fog from their main detachment and come across a seemingly abandoned german trench works.

Atmosphere is king here, mud, blood and razorwire. It's a fucking of the mental variety.

There's also The Outpost:
Set in present day and deals with a group of mercenaries hired by an unknown party to travel deep into some eastern european war torn country to secure a bunker, unmarked and unknown to any map.
Deals with Nazi Wunderwaffen an other twisted science. Fun film. Some good spooks. Good concept. Would play a vidya based on it.
>>
>>18369706
The Ruins.
>>
>>18396655
Lastly, The Bunker:
Overall the film is meh, not so bad, just not super good like Deathwatch by comparison.

This film does evoke an unsettling vicariousness IMO, and it brings to mind feeling of being trapped and encircled by hostile forces and watched and being fucked with mentally, and that peculiar claustrophobia when one is wandering around dark, cramped spaces.

A novelty, as it's actually centered around a group of Wehrmact soldiers for once. (though they're played by british actors lol)

The squad is fleeing American fire and bombardment and come across a bunker in some German forest in the final stages of the war. The bunker has been mostly abandoned for 'unknown reasons' but command left an old ww1 vet and some green teenager to maintain it.

This film has that one fantastic creepy scene, that, though it doesn't redeem the film, it at least makes it stick in my mind:
it's a scene very much reminiscent to the "USS Indianapolis scene" in Jaws, where Quint the sharkhunter describes some horrific event in the past. I fucking love that scene.

Anyway, context:
The troops have sought refugee in the bunker, and are settling down to the fact that they'll likely not being venturing out for some time due to enemy snipers etc.
So they gather round and the old ww1 vet tells them why the bunker has been abandoned:

If the time link doesn't work, just watch 21:20 to about 25:30 or so:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFpwel2uEA4&feature=player_detailpage#t=1280

Like I said, the film isn't that good (most films aren't) but Mil horror is a relative rarity and this particular scene I really like.

>The Mothman Prophecies
Has some nicely creepy moments.
Haven't seen it in a while; wonder if it still holds up?
>>
Watching The Wailing right now. Kinda disappointed so far, considering how much people on here hyped it up.

>Descent
fuck all of you for making me waste my time watching this thinking that suggestions on /x/ are worth anything.

seriously bar none the worst fucking pile of shit movie i have ever seen. shit acting. shit writing. literally just cartoon tier gore and some jump scares and a plot that is fucking ass backwards illogical and retarded.

i hope im saving someone else some time who might be skimming through this to look for some shit to watch. fuck this dumb movie.

100% going to never watch movies on the suggestion of /x/ ever again. i have never enjoyed a single thing these threads have a consensus on. holy shit. you would think at least one of them would be good - nope.

i would like to add though that the brown azn chick had a nice body. ill let that take the movie from 0/10 to 1/10. ill give you guys something at least.

The Descent is the only movie I've actually seen which takes place in a cave, except for The Cave

The 4th Kind. Pretty much destroyed me.

What's it about? Can you sum it up in like 2 sentences?
>>
>>18405077
i think you could replace the setting for 'the descent' with literally anything else and it might be more interesting.

like if they just went down some stairs for the whole movie and some stuff happened along the way, or if they like, were just in the woods where they started. anything.

So you think the movie would have been better if it was about girls being chased by monsters in a basement, or a forest?

>thinks paranormal is implausable
>but overly tryhard conspiricies is plausable.
Plausability is not what makes horror
Do you not get the concept or horror?
Or are you autistic?
>>

i think the movie would have been better if the writing wasnt awful. i dont know how else to put it.
also it being in a cave struggling with the same shit over and over for 80% of the movie is pretty god damn boring.

what about the movie is appealing to you? i feel it lacks any sort of grab or interest that might make the viewer actually care about anything that is happening on screen. what was more annoying is that nearly all of it was extremely predictable, even the dumbass ending which im sure at least one of you thinks is a cool twist but its not actually well thought out.

honestly nothing in the movie tied in with anything else in the movie. there was nothing to read into, just a jump scare shitshow that you can pretty much only take at face value even if you tried really hard to find some sort of meaning in it.

why the fuck do they start the movie with the car accident and the hospital and the kid and shit? just for some gore? that premise does not matter to the rest of the movie at all. they could have started it at the cabin with all the sluts and nothing would be different.
