Let me ask you a question
What is the point of praying?
What do you look to achieve by sitting still for hours without doing anything?
Enlighten me
Unless they're just meditating and harnessing mindfulness, well being, and connecting with their true will, they're wasting their time.
I look at all religious nuts as mentally/logically impaired.

It works on very many diffrent levels, the most obvious one: praying gradualy changes the way your brain works.

Mantra is a perfect example of destorying your ego with every incantation to achieve greater enlightment and make your will stronger. By repeating mantras that are illogical, your brain will just stop working for nothing (to preserve energy), and will eventually 'turn off'. Which, in some cases, is a good thing (just like sleep).
I consciously skipped the spiritual effect, because it is diffrent in each and every religion.

It's so you have someone to thank when things go right and someone to whine to and be pissed off at when things go wrong.

praying = memeing
There are different views. If you ask the average Christian, they would likely tell you either they are petitioning God for aid, or just "speaking" to it for comfort. Generally if you believe in spiritual entities, then prayer is a petition to those entity for help in general. It can also, as other anons have pointed out, be a form of meditation. There is also the Satanic notion of prayer/ritual as a psychodrama to prepare yourself for a task or challenge.
