I'm a metal head that pretty much loves all genres of metal but I hate when people diss on sub-genres using the 'growl' thing as their only argument.. people do realize that "vocals" are only part of the entire band.. every time somebody says "metal is just screaming"... 'just' screaming huh? When I hear growls in certain types of metal it reminds me of a warcry in a sense.. a warriors ritual or chant which makes it its own form of art.. especially in pagan/folk metal to me the growls are used to set the feel.

Not all music is about melody and range sometimes it's about atmosphere, feel and vibe.
