Alright. So let's talk about what a time machine is:

Your brain. Is a time machine.

Okay. So, that doesn't count because it's not a machine right? Fine. So picture a machine that does what a brain does, but with machinery. That's a time machine.

There are two terminal ends to any time travel. When you're in the past, looking at the future, it's called "prediction." When you're in the future, looking at the past, it's called "memory." The only way to alter the future, is to alter the past which causes that future, because that's what the word "cause" means.

If you go into the past, without setting up a chain of events which cause you to go into the past, then it's not really time travel. So, any travel into the past requires anchoring yourself to that future point by way of prediction, or else whatever knowledge you come back with is useless, because it's no longer applicable to the universe you're now in. I.e. the universe you're now in is not the one in which you travel back in time, unless you set up a chain of events that through prediction cause the version of you that hasn't traveled back in time to do so when the opportunity arises.

Make sense? Predictions are like maps for time travelers. Predictions cause parallel universe to assume similar shapes, so that time travelers can more easily discover coordinates that align with the universe from which they depart.
