Okay, so I'm thinking now that the best idea might be to wash it in salt & spring water. send the energy back to the other person, then fill it with salt afterwards and see how it feels after all that. It might even be useful to keep him from contacting me again if I keep it the statue around filled with something he can't get through.

Why not? I've removed a curse by burning someone's paintings before. I suppose the danger is that the energy gets released, and you have to take care of where that energy goes or it could reattach itself to you, is that what you are getting at?
(It's a nice statue though, I'd feel bad breaking a perfectly good fertility goddess statue just because its previous owner didn't like me.)
