Why is the occult so addictive and fascinating? I literally can't stop reading about it. Freemasonry, numerology, demonology, hidden satanic symbols and signs in pop culture, the collective unconscious, mythology etc.... there are thousands of puzzle pieces and it's hard work putting it altogether and I'm glad when 2 pieces click.... but I still have not the slightest idea what the entire picture looks like. It's just too complex.
Are there deeper reasons behind occultism, or is it all just entertainment and nonsense?
What is the entire picture? What is the essence of the occult?

Why are magnets attractive? Because if they weren't, nobody would have bothered to create a word for them.

not intended to be entertainment but is quite often entertaining. The feilds of the occult and entertainment have always intertwined.
everything you about the occult right now (from the internet mostly) is useless.
look up the word "occult" and its either forbidden or hidden knowledge.
the material of the occult is at such a level that you might possibly not understand it when you confront it, this is why there are complex rituals and symbolism that slowly help you understand the meaning of that knowledge
It's a basic sensation that we keep from our childhood. We love the feeling of learning a 'secret', or seeing something that we aren't supposed to see.
We also like to think we are smarter than others.
You will have a field day reading about the Order of Nine Angles.
Ignorance and mystery = curiosity
The less we know and understand the more curious we are. It's a survival instinct actually. Even though a mysterious thing may not be relevant to a current situation survival tells us that it may be useful later and finding out what we can now can very likely prevent danger in the future.
