afaik alchemy was invented to hide knowledge about the soul. Since magicians are no longer being persecuted, and books are no longer being burned, you'd probably be better off reading new material and not bothering with encrypted old alchemy volumes which try to make things as confusing as possible.

This. "Dwellings" is the only "alchemy" book I know of that's clearly written by a pretty intelligent person. As far as what he is talking about - I have no fucking clue, and you won't learn any "practical" alchemy from it, whatever the fuck that means. It's just a good read.
Most other alchemy books are written by delusional fat fucks with the intelligence of a 5th grader.

P.S. Recommendations aren't exactly useful unless you back them up.

I recommend The Path of Alchemy, by Mark Stavish. He cuts through a lot of the symbolism and bullshit, and gets right down to the nitty-gritty of practical application. Couple this with a college-level chemistry class, and you might actually learn something.

I also would recommend picking up a copy of Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs. Stavish goes into detail about how to make tinctures and elixirs out of plants and herbs, and combining that with a reference book of ingredients commonly used by magical practitioners would be invaluable.
