Linguistically speaking, magic is referred to often as an "art" (e.g., "The Dark Arts," etc.). So in that sense, it's a rhetorical euphemism to distance the practice of magic from the realm of the supernatural and place it in a locus of practice rather than passive wishing.

In the larger sense, art (and magic) are about influence. Everything that influences you is art, really, and the specific manifestation is a question of medium and intention.

When we seek to affect others with our thoughts, we are limited in the capacity by which we can influence them. There are direct, physical ways to do this, and there are more removed, esoteric ways as well. Historically, most cultures tend to view the degree of removal from physicality as directly proportional to the degree to which it is considered "art," excepting the Martial Arts - which, when you explore them, are really much more about the control of self than that of others... which also, it must be admitted, can be said of all art ever.

Perfect control of the self would be the equivalent of perfect control over all consciousness. This is a paradoxical truth, but also a core element of the human experience.

Thus, the dadaists are correct in that everything is art, and Marx is correct in that all art is a reflection of the values of the superstructure of the ruling class, and both are simultaneously true as well as any other truth you can think of regarding art.
