With Halloween only two weeks away and with most horror movies nowadays being bland hollywood rebooted garbage, how about everyone shares a recent horror film that you think is good so we can have some good scares with good films for the holiday.

I'll start, It Follows was the scariest horror movie I've seen in years. The monster was scary both in appearance and act, the idea behind the monster was unique and creepy and the tone made me anxious throughout the whole film because I actually didn't know when the monster was going to show up.

Deadfall Trail is a really good psychological horror. It has really bad reviews that I never understand. My only complaint is one part where it's really weird and could have been better without.
>>
Bump. Need more horror movies in my life

im sorry son but there are no good recent horror movies. however, exocist 3 directors cut is out soon.

I saw Session 9 a couple years ago and regret waiting so long to check it out.

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but definitely is my favorite horror movie of the last 15 years.
>>
>with most horror movies nowadays being bland hollywood rebooted garbage

We're living in a horror movie golden agen especially coming out of the fucking 90s and early 00s which were absolutely trash save for about 3 films over 15 years.

Seriously though Hollywood has realized horror movies are cheap as fuck to make and a safe bet to make money. The output has been great.

The VVitch though is pretty good.
>>

>horror movie golden age

There are many more horror movies now than there were ten years ago, yes but most of them follow all the same cheesy tropes or they try waaaaay too hard to be scary or the idea for the movie is plain stupid [The Purge]. I watched the trailer for Ouji: Origin of Evil and it was the epitome of all these problems right down to the cliche "creepy little girl" trope.

If you really think there are good horror movies being released recently can you share some more of ones that you thought were good?

Let The Right One In- Has horror elements but there are other themes like awkward adolescence, bleak living situations, and first loves. Highly recommended.

Final Girls- A definite takeoff on canpy slasher films, but highly enjoyable. The love between a mother and daughter, and junk like that. Highly recommended.

Dawn of the Dead (remake)- Very good zombie flick.

Bram Stokers Dracula- Everything but Keanu.

The Others.- Really great ghost story.

The Thing- Classic body horror.

Ginger Snaps- Juxtaposes lycanthropy with puberty. Small budget, not the best practical effects, but still a great. Highly recommended.

The Faculty/Disturbing Behavior- The 2 best "highschool" 90's horror films. I'm probably more nostalgic than most about these.

American Mary- Really great little movie. Give this one a chance. The ending is really great.

Evil Dead 2- Can't go wrong with this one. If you haven't seen it, watch it immediately. then watch "Army of Darkness" right after. Highly recommended.

Freaks of Nature- Horror/comedy that riffs on a lot of genres. Highly recommended.

Return of the Living Dead. Best Zombie film ever. Highly recommended.

The Loved Ones- Australian thriller. Has really good, tense moments.

The Woman- Really fucked up torture/revenge porn. Highly recommended.

Trick or Treat- Nice little anthology. came out a few years ago. All the stories tie in with eachother. Should be a yearly Halloween watch.

Bone Tomahawk- Western/horror. This one surprised me. Really good and some over the top gore. Highly recommended.

Silver Bullet- Stephen King Werewolf story. A little dated, but is still really enjoyable.

The Burbs- Horror/comedy. Classic. Highly recommended.

Excision- Long build up, but it pays off in the end. Quirky teen angst mixed with psychosis.

Afflicted- Low budget but really good take on the vampire genre. Surprised me with how good it was. (found footage)

Pandorum- Space/horror. Highly recommended

Night of the Creeps. Classic 80's horror. You have to watch it at least once in your life. Has a little bit of everything.

Blood Punch- Low budget, but makes up for it with a cool story. don't let the first act throw you off. It's worth it to watch the whole movie.

Behind the Mask (the rise of Leslie Vernon) Really good take off on the "supernatural slasher" genre. Highly recommended.

Wer- "realistic?" werewolf movie. Worth a watch. Gets less realistic towards the end, but still good.

Creep Show 1 and 2. Classic anthology horror. Fun anchoring story. Meant to be cheesy, comic booky stories, but it works.

>Trick r' Treat
Pure, distilled essence of Halloween. Several short stories which converge both thematically and chronologically.

>Drag Me to Hell
Been a while since I've seen this one but I remember being surprised by how much I liked it. Fun take of gypsy curses.

>Stuff I wrote before I read the part of the OP that said "recent":
>In the Mouth of Madness
Faithful to the HP Lovecraft style, plus meta/4th wall and John Carpenter's style.

>The Gate
Very similar to Poltergeist in many ways but more fun and stylistic. It's the sort of movie you watch to remember how fun horror movies were when you were a kid but it's almost never scary as an adult. Still fun though.

>Something Wicked This Way Comes
A spooky carnival in a sleepy town in October, by Ray Bradbury. Very comfy movie.

>The Ninth Gate
Not so much a horror movie but deals with Satanism and forbidden knowledge, grimoires, cool stuff. Not really a good movie technically speaking but its interesting subject matter diminished the faults for me.

Looking for recommendations for movies dealing with Lovecraftian "staring into the abyss" themes, forbidden knowledge, centuries-old conspiracies, demonology beyond just Satan himself, or anything with a thoughtful internal mythology. It's hard to wade through all the slashers and wolfmen to find the genres of horror I like.

Hush was pretty great new horror movie. There needs to be more disabled protagonists in the horror genre.

I have a question guys. I'm going to have my 11 year old daughter for Halloween weekend this year and she wants to stay in watching scary movies instead of going trick or treating. I've already decided on yoga hosers for one but can I have some suggestions of Halloween movies you watched as a kid around that age?
>>

Something campy and fun. How about Evil Dead 2 or Re-Animator if they're mature enough. If not get something classic and relatively tame nowadays like Halloween.

I still don't get why Lake Mungo is not better regarded. I get that people like it and it's spooky but
it's also a unique reference in that mock documentary tradition. The real story is happening underneath the feature.
The way the Australian landscape is laid bare as the stark foreboding brooding land full of antiquity that it is helps set the ominous mood that builds througout.
Maybe the departed call out to us all of the time but we move our living lives on and leave them to wander forever in that ancient forboding wonder.
The film moves us effortlessly toward a sense that maybe our fates see us forever unsettled on that other plane to come, long after the film has ended.
It takes me into a place of dread and ill ease and I haven't been able to watch it since.
Shit, it's just a clever, spooky film. It's my recommendation this all hallows eve.
>>
Halloween and halloween II, Scream, scream 2, the exorcist, and the original texas chainsaw was pretty cool too.

Fucking SICK of the Bone Tomahawk meme.
I like literally everything else you listed, and after seeing BT recommended in every one of these threads I decided to give it a chance.

BORING, low budget, incredibly slow, shit acting, shit climax/ending. There was so much more they could have done with the idea.
Don't watch this movie!!

I particularly like horror films that take place in secluded northern areas

Saw lights out recently. The opening scene is really good. Its such a simple concept but genuinely frightening.

The ending was pretty dull and typical though. I think they should have avoided the house setting cause its been so overused. Stick with industrial areas or have the final confrontation in the mental hospital.
>>
>>18252372
The opening was great. I love how the guy instead of being stupid and investigating just nope'd the fuck out of there.
It was also interesting that the trailer only showed parts from the intro and nothing else. Which is rare for a movie.

I agree that it got a little dull, though the part with the gun flashes near the end was really well done.
>>

Same here, I love the VHS movies. You can still buy a copy on a vhs from walmart. They did it for marketing but it looked good. I love horror but I really only watch hand held camera type stuff.
