For those of you familiar with JF (RHCP guitarist, solo artist), he claims spirits have been writting the music and he is just a vessel. What are your thoughts on spirits creating art through individuals?

he may just be a junkie or he may be onto something
>>
>>18232307
He is clean these days.
>>
dem reverse solos doe
>>
ICP has claimed similar things(they call it the dark carnival)... and people who have joined them in the studio claim spooky shit happens.
>>
>>18232304
Holy shit, his brain is fried.
>>
>>18232331
ICP also think magnets are magic
>>
>>18232304
Creativity is a function of the mind, a process that happens naturally.

It's not that every word and sound is constructed via choice, but that creativity works as if a gear is constantly turning in the head, churning out ideas and songs and sequences etc. It's almost automatic, but the conscious made can make the distinction that it's not necessarily constructing things itself.

It's still a function of the brain.

It's not spirits.
>>
>>18232326
music played reversed has a sinister vibe to it, any explanations why we feel that?
>>
>>18232334
Can you explain how magnets work?
>checkmate, m8
>>
>>18232338
It's not a naturally occurring sound, there isn't really any tangible point of reference which makes us feel uncomfortable
>>
>>18232344
Neither is an electronic synthesizer
>>
>>18232331
Do you believe other beings can produce art through living humans as vessels?

>>18232337
Interesting. I agree with this, probably just a way to comprehend his creativity.
>>
>>18232304
So now we know that spirits aren't talented.
>>
>>18232435
hey m8 his music is great, both his stuff with RHCP and solo
>>
>>18232337

both

intriguing

>Jelly Nuts
>What's it like in the studio?

>Violent J
>Shit... You'd shit your panties like a bitch. Everyone would if they saw the magic. We rarely show anybody though. When people are over Mike's we always front about everything. We just try to sit there and run a regular session until they leave. Mike will never publicly tell people about the Dark Carnival. My guess is that he might have tried at first, but people probably just dissed him so hard that he gave it up now. He probably just figures "Fuck it! Why tell people?" Me and Shaggy love the dissing we get though. We love the fact that people hate us. No one believes us. That's the whole fun of it. That's the whole game. Do you believe it or not? We tell everyone that will listen about the spirits that we run with. The spirits tell their homies about us too. I'll bet. There is 5 of us in the studio at all times. Me, Shaggy, Mike, Legs, and The Dark Carnival. The Dark Carnival runs that bitch. What ever it wants, it gets. When it's supposed to be a certain way we can all feel it. There is never any question. When we go against that feeling and do something else, everything shakes on Mike's walls. Fuckin' ask anybody that's been down there when it happens. I love that crazy shit. I freak my best homies out with that shit. They always think it's some kind of trick. I showed my mom that shit. She was just as freaked out as when we lived in that haunted house. The Dark Carnival oversees everything we do. Everything has to be it's way and we wouldn't want it any other way.

He doesn't understand what's going on so he ended up with "spirits".

Art and creativity is something magical, you can separate if from yourself, and that's probably what he did but then ended up with "spirits". That's like the brick wall people place in front of them when they first delve into philosophy.

Dude's going crazy because he can't handle it. Dude would go crazy if he did acid. Dude would dude things with dudes like a dude would.

I'll tell you what he meant by that.
>>
>>18232304
That explains why his guitar tracks and vocals had so much soul. He is being controlled by a bunch of them.
>>
his music is super boring though
>>
Watch Sold their soul for rock n' roll for more. The first 20 minutes or so is shit but the rest is gold.

Apparently they latched onto him while the RHCP was recording Blood Sugar Sex Magik in the mansion

The song is lyrically interesting. It's like the divine and amazing approached from a really foul mouthed and boring way.

Michael Gira from Swans has talked about a man named "Joseph" speaking through him in his music.

This junkie is as credible as Art Bell.

Art Bell's creations haven't been heard by millions all around the world
>>
His music is amazing

The thought that spirits are involved in creatitivy is very traditional. Think of the meaning of the word "inspiration", or enthusiasm (=in+theos, the creative subject is filled with a god), also in Greek there is the word "mania" (madness, as in the devine madness of the poet, in latin = furor poeticus), the invocation of the muses at the beginning of a poetic work etc.
>>
What, you think all the occult symbolism in music is just a coincidence?

David Bowie directly incorporated Kaballah into some of his music, Can and Led Zeppelin were versed in Aleister Crowley, Stockhausen (considered by many the greatest composer of the last century) was well-versed in esoteric knowledge and had as aims "shaping and transforming the world, about the truth of life and of reality, about the creative departure into a future determined by spirit", blues players had legends of the Crossroads, in Plato's Republic mention is made of music relating and shaping as well as reflecting the spirit of the time, Jimmy Hendrix called it the Electric Church, Prince's androgyny and symbol and some of his songs relate strongly to a number of esoteric concepts- we could go on and on and you will find there is spiritual practice and undertones in a very significant amount of music and there always has been.

Think about Gregorian chants and Hindu mantras, and Islamic prayers and Tibetan throat singing. Beyond a huge number of the most successful musicians and thinkers from history, isolated cultures from around the world all attribute a spiritual aspect to their music. I myself have been a musician for a long time and have been heavily influenced by my spiritual practices and experiences, and so have a number of the others I know and have known. The idea that music is channeled is much more common than many of you suppose.
>>
>>18235077
Very in depth, informative and well written post anon. The music that is released today is pretty bland and uninspiring, Beiber and co wont be remember in 30 years like the Stones have been etc. Do you attribute the lack of spirituality and more focus on commercialism the reason for the shitty music of today?
>>
needs to find some better spirits the shit sux
>>
>>18232487
neat
>>
>>18235148

I think there is loads of good music being made today, some of it is even popular.

That being said, radio pop is objectively simpler and recorded to be more compressed which is a big part of why say, almost all pop country is identical. Beyond that, there is a small group of writers that write a huge number of hits for a wide range of artists, so there is going to be more similarity there as well. With this being considered, every era has a lot of bland music that lacks inspiration or meaning. It is possible to have a commercial goal but still make something which is real and which has a lot of spirit to it.

But yes, these are very commercial times and beyond artists lacking spirituality media industries are more centrally concentrated and controlled and consumers themselves are also less spiritually inclined. I think enormous cultural changes are underway and that a lot of great music will be as well, but as I said earlier there is already lots of good stuff, though it depends what genres you like because not everything is in a creatively fertile place.
>>
>>18235201
I agree that there is still some good stuff, but no major culture influencing great bands like The Beatles, Nirvana, RHCP, David Bowie. I do agree we are going through a culture shift and within the next decade we will see the rise of big bands again
>>
>>18232304
if it possible that bands that gain popularity quick have sold their souls or indulged in some kind of occult practice? seems to be the case with smaller bands too
>>
>>18232304
>What are your thoughts on spirits creating art through individuals?
These spirits aren't very good at creating music, the chilly willies are shit.
>>
>>18232304
Kind of boring music to be written with a spiritual influence.
>>
>>18234799
lol you must be like 12.
>>
>>18235322
great post
>>
If you've ever worked in any professional capacity with musicians, you'll often come to find they have an odd, fragility to their persona. Don't try to intellectualise this oddness, however; what manifests itself in such nonsense talk is typically a form of escapism on their part, and is usually highly annoying by the end of the day lol
>>
>>18232304
He sounds like he has savant syndrome. These people are usually reclusive, so maybe he went into himself because these manifestations of spirits were his emotional reactions to the world around him.

tl;dr he's an autistic genius
>>
>>18235479
I'd agree with this. Musically he is a genius, whether you like the chili peppers or not they were a hugely famous band. They only got famous after JF joined and started writing most of their songs
>>
>>18232964

You should dig a little deeper before attributing all brain functions to human consciousness. Spirits have much more influence in subtlety than you would think.
>>
>>18232304
He was an autistic savant put in the situation of getting to join the group he idolized but then, for years found himself competing with the ghost of the guy he replaced. By Kiedis' own admission they treated him like shit. In the Funky Monks documentary you can see him attempting awkwardly to fit in but there's a wall he can't get past. For the replacement drummer, Chad Smith this same attitude wasn't a problem. He would come, record shit then go again but for vulnerable, insecure Frusciante this alienation caused him to withdraw into himself. I wouldn't be surprised if his decline into addiction was a further effort to replace Slovak and that's who he's implying the spirit is.
>>
>>18236232
So do you think he was literally is competing with Slovaks ghost or just figuratively (in terms of trying to live up to him)?
