The most recent game I played was "Kholat".
It is based on the dyatlov pass incident and you are investigating what happened.
Gameplay is like every other of the gorillion indie horror walking simulators (seriously whats up with that abundance of this sort of game?), but I thought the atmosphere and overall design made it special

Not to mention the entire series on which it was supposed to be based, Silent Hill.

Silent Hill 1-3 are genius, 4 is good for certain moments (and is the first to shift to 1st-person POV, which creates some nice tension), and basically all the rest are American developers' miscarriages of the ambient brilliance of what came before (4 being the departure hybrid point).

All-time most haunting = SH2.

And yeah, these games are old. Get an emu or hunt for the ancient consoles (though the remaster of 2/3 is on PS3).

Holy fuck, don't get the remastered 2/3 on ps3. They fucked up everything, the biggest screw up being with the sound. Better off hunting down the originals.
>>
>>18229303
I liked SOMA because it did not try to “gamify” horror like the whole survival horror genre does. You have no weapons, no ammo, no fuel, whatever. Instead, you just explore and interact with the environment. Is there any other good horror game that does this?

I can't stand games where you actually have a gun and are supposed to shoot the enemies; because either you have a surplus of bullets and the game turns into a boring FPS, or you have a lack of bullets and the game becomes frustrating as you constantly run out and have to resort to melee weapons and respawn loops

Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light. aka Russian /k/ommando simulator. Just grab the Metro Redux pack off Steam since there's a 75% discount right now and it includes all the DLC for free anyway. It's an action FPS with heavy horror elements, set in post-apocalyptic metro tunnels under Moscow after nuclear fallout which are infested with irradiated mutated beasts.
For maximum spooks, play on Survival Mode + Ranger difficulty but for a beginner you might want to go for Normal difficulty the first time around since Ranger disables the HUD and gives you less ammo etc.
The greatest aspect about these games is just how immersive they are, especially in a dark room with surround headphones on. The creepiest and unsettling levels include "Dead City" in 2033 and "Regina" in Last Light. The levels with human enemies normally offer you two routes of completion: stealth or the straightforward gunfight. You'll also need to watch the amount of ammo you use (since it's scarce and expensive) and gas filters for levels that need them.
>>
>>18229883

Amnesia and Penumbra are the only ones I recognized (and in the case of amnesia, played) from that list, and IMO they are also examples of trying to “gamify” horror. (Health bars, sanity meters, resource collection, etc.)

I enjoyed SOMA much more than Amnesia due to reasons like this. Amnesia felt like more of a game whereas SOMA felt like more of a story.

Might check out the others though, thanks for the suggestions

Loved this series. I picked it up worrying that it might just be Sewer Level: The Game. Instead, it has some of the best atmospheric and peripheral storytelling I've seen.

That said, I never understood why so many Moscow citizens decided to invoke the glory of the NAZIS. I mean, the Reds at least make sense, but how many Russians feel a nostalgic longing to pretend to be WWII Germans? I haven't read the book yet, but I wonder if they were originally something like royalists trying to put a Romanov on the throne of Moscow's subway kingdom, and executive meddlers thought it was too esoteric for the average gamer.

Color me surprised. I wouldn't have even checked, I thought it was so ridiculous.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo-Nazism#Russia

>Some observers have noted a subjective irony of Russians embracing Nazism, because one of Hitler's ambitions at the start of World War II was the Generalplan Ost (Master Plan East) which envisaged to exterminate, expel, or enslave most or all Slavs from central and eastern Europe (e.g., Russians, Ukrainians, Poles etc.). Russian neo-Nazis deny the authenticity of this plan and instead emphasize the 1939-1941 Nazi-Soviet alliance. At the end of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, over 25 million Soviet citizens had died. In a 2007 news story, ABC News reported, "In a country that lost more people defeating the Nazis than any other country, there are now an estimated 50,000 to 70,000 neo-Nazis, half of the world's total."

Russian bigots confirmed for dumbest bigots.

I also learned more than I ever needed to know about gay Russian Nazis.

>There is also a widespread gay rights nazi skinhead subculture with its own Vkontakte group, GASH, and an alleged 1700 members in Moscow alone.

http://www.vice.com/gr/read/meet-russias-gay-aryan-skinheads-finally-bringing-homosexuality-to-the-neo-nazi-world

It's really hard for me to believe this. But they definitely should have had their own level in Metro.

>Our sexual life generally consists of BDSM, especially sadomasochism. Our brothers aren’t engaged in tenderness on silk sheets—we commit truly manly acts.

>Almost all nationalists have a piercing, traditional leather skinhead jackboots, and blue jeans, which became a sexual fetish for us long ago, as well as shaven heads. By our nature, sexual intercourse is rough. This is similar to primitive passion.

Pretty much all there is to the building is that you're in the dark (which your flashlight mitigates) and that you have ghouls popping out at you.

Oh, and the fact that you enter it from the east, but when inside the map indicates you're in the west. But nobody's going to check their map and figure that out themselves.

I'd say Fallout 1's a better pick if you're looking for horror, because of how bleak and otherworldly some parts of the game are. The final boss also stands out as being one of the best instances of body horror in a video game.

Ignoring the obvious classics like STALKER: SoC (which is a fantastic game everybody should play), I haven't seen mention of System Shock 2, which is surprising. Good sci-fi horror. If you like Event Horizon or Alien, you'd love System Shock.

If you like black comedy with your horror, the new Freddy's game is actually pretty good for that. I was surprised by how successful the new FNAF game turned out in that regard. It's actually pretty funny, and evades the jumpscare simulator it's predecessors deteriorated into.

>>

This is what you get when you cater to the lowest common denominator, and the experience has to be easy peezy not japafuckingneezy.

Give me the old style survival horror, where the atmosphere is king, survival resources are scant and the penalty for failure is death.

Not overwrought visuals that try so desperately to hide the overall lack of actual substance and, in the end, actual enjoyment.
>>
>>18245972
They should at least focus on the immersion. Doesnt even need to be a challenging game. But when none of the choices matter (or when there arent even choices), it is just bullshit. If you can get an PS/PS2 emulator working, then the old classics like Resident Evil and especially Silent Hill 1/2 are worth a play if you never played them.

Don't bother with the PC ports as they are invariably ass. They're different from most of the games today, at least the ones mentioned in this thread. You have to be in the right mood. They are not for the impatient.

For recent shit:
FEAR was enjoyable enough. Nothing special. Some jump scares here and there.
Why FEAR 1 (and the now not-canon) expansion packs sticks in my mind is that I would find myself, from time to time, with a true feeling of vicarious dread: there are points in those three games (which are largely interchangeable) where the path I HAD to follow lead the PC down a path that I, the player, just did not want to go down. A half submerged sewer for example (and considering the last time I went into water I nearly jumped out of my skin in fright due to an entity I hadn't before encountered).

FEAR et.al., are strange games.
You carry around a small arsenal, have a super power that allows you to basically slow time down for a few seconds, and yet you still have to choose to follow the path. The story cannot progess unless you walk down into that murky, half submerged fucking sewer.

A fun distraction.
Nothing special.
Enemy (human) AI was, and still is, phenomenal.

I replayed FEAR 1 recently and was surprised at how responsive the AI is, even now nearly a decade later.

Anyone ITT that hasn't played Condemned: Criminal Origins should add that to their prospective list.

Wait for a steam sale or some shit.
Unlike FEAR, no big bad guns with near unlimited ammo, no bullet time; just you, a deranged and mutilated maniac and the pipe you just wrenched out of the wall in order to smack him with.
Oh, and the dark, twisting corridors that you just heard some shuffling down, but you still have to keep going.

Played it through once. Second time a few years later I got up to that burned down library/book stack section where you just have a momentary glimpse of some twisted, slithering freaks scuttling around before they scatter at your flashlight beam.

Had to stop. Didn't do that part again.

Even though I KNEW that shit was going to happen, and what the nature of that shit was, getting myself to want to go through it again I think is worse than the initial play-through when it's all still unknown, well, maybe sometimes at least.

Best time to play it.
Well, at least at night time.

I'm such a puss puss that I had to play the school section (hallway/flicky lights part) of FEAR 2 during the day.
Just couldn't make it.

There's just something about an intermittently flickering florescent light, stark white, the kind that generates more gloom than it dispels, that really fucking gets to me.

Halflife2 had that section in the carpark basement or whatever with the fast zombies and that goddamn flickering florescent tube light.

A mistake many people make with scary games, and horror literature for that matter, is that they don't consume it in the right environmental conditions.

Reading The Haunting of Hill House on a train going past a brightly lit countryside with lots of loud and colourful people around you?
Yeah, really enjoy that.
But don't fucking complain that it "wasn't scawwy at awww!"

I hate these sorts of people.

Horror, be it games, movies or books/comics, are so dependent on the surrounding in which they're consumed.
More than any other genre.
>>
>>18246809
>Halflife2 had that section in the carpark basement or whatever with the fast zombies and that goddamn flickering florescent tube light.
The sound design on those fuckers is all you need. If I know where the zombie is, or which direction it will be sprinting towards me, I'm fine. but in sections like that where you're blind to them, it really gets to me. Those fuckin screeches.

Something really scary should scare you regardless of the surroundings. Of course spooky stuff is the most effective when enjoyed alone and at night, but it really shouldnt depend on that alone.

That HL2 section really is great. It has a lot of parts that are really creepy. Hell, the overall premise alone is stuff for nightmares

The only spooky thing about that game is the ai.

>comes back and kills me, still holding breath in the back of the locker like a statue
Never played it since, shame cause it was a pretty neat looking game.
>>
This thread reminded me of a nippon game that I believe it's not available for PC. It's probably for NintendoDS or PS2, I guess.
If I'm not mistaken, the story was about a dude that was in a victorian house or some shit. The game started as a classical waifu game, with sex and lolis, but it degenerated to murder, rape, torture, ghosts, magical spooky beasts and other horror elements. Does it ring a bell for someone?

Never had that problem on several playthroughs, unless it was on hardest difficulty and I ran out of health to hold my breath.

Personally, I loved Alien: Iso. It's by no means perfect, but it's great stealth horror.

The AI could be annoying, but for the most part it was fair. I didn't like losing permanent health for holding my breath for a few seconds, THAT was fucking dumb and made the hardest difficulty (with no HUD at all) a pain in the ass since even if you never get hurt you still have to guess when to use meds to heal your fucking asthma or whatever.

Beyond that, though, it's so much fun if you can enjoy a slower pace. I really like games where you're pursued by something you can at best slow down, but not just kill with standard gear. Horror games with a deadly arsenal tend to start solid but turn into shooters later on.

I would frankly guess that most people who didn't like A:I were expecting a more fast-paced shooter or weren't playing on the right difficulty level. Only the two highest levels are worth it; otherwise it's too easy to load up on supplies and just poop some flame at the alien any time it shows up.
>>
>>18246743

I don't get this shit. I've seen this kind of person, who always listens to his own shitty music while playing through the game, watching TV on another monitor (that he also isn't listening to, because he's listening to music). Then they'll leave with everything still running (including their Netflix program) and come back later and just settle in.

I had one roommate who claimed The Witcher was his all time favorite series, he even got the little wolf medallion when TW3 came out and wore the fucker. But whenever he encountered a conversation, he would hammer the square button and skip everything. On his first playthrough. On his favorite series, where story is the game's strong suit.

I try not to judge people on how they enjoy the things they enjoy, but fuck. It's like they don't even give a shit about anything, they just like the noise.
>>
>>18249589
Other anon here, but I was quite dissapointed, because it failed to spook me. I didnt expect a fast paced shooter at all. I didnt have problem with the AI being inconsistent like the other anon had. Quite the opposite, I thought it was too predictable. After the first few encounters, I realized that it would just engage in certain walk/search patterns. It was also quite obvious which sounds came from the real alien and which were just randomly there to spook you but with no consequences.
And when the alien came, it was just too cartoonish and derpy to be spooky. I found myself giggling at the animations.
There was also a problem with the overall gameplay, I think. The missions were mostly "open dat door!"
But as I said earlier, the design was fucking stellar. Really made it feel like playing the movies in that regard. So it wasnt a bad game for me, just a strong case of wasted potential
>>
>>18243981
Nah, it takes place in Insmouth academy.
>>
>>18249688

It's a hard balance to reach with stealth games. Either enemies need to be somewhat predictable or the stealth system just doesn't work, it's just complete bullshit luck.

I feel like they could have done more to give Ripley more options for evading the alien. As it stands, if she gets spotted, there's almost never a way to escape it without wounding it with fire. And a number of the distraction tools just didn't work long enough for Ripley to use them to sneak by.

The alien... I guess it's just overexposure, and I'm not sure how one gets around that. The game is about the fucker. There's only so much they could do to spice it up. It's a perfect killer, not a stylish one. Mostly it worked for me, but I could see how it would wear on people or just fail to impress.

Not sure you're being fair about the gameplay missions. "Open dat door" is pretty universal with games with adventure elements, and there's always a more plot-relevant drive behind the missions I can remember (escape with Axel, find the medical supplies, get to the ambulance, access the AI core). "Unlock the door" is a padding method, but not a bad one.

Any recommendations you can throw my way of games like A:I that did it better?

>>
>>18249773
>Either enemies need to be somewhat predictable or the stealth system just doesn't work
Of course there needs to be a certain consistency to make it not frustrating, but thats not what I meant. It was just too predictable at times. You knew when the Alien was going to pop up and when it was impossible for it to appear. One could see through the AI and almost predict which of its limited search patterns it would go through. The surprises actually came frome when the stealth mechanics were inconsistent. Sometimes it didnt saw you barely standing behind a table, sometimes it would randomly look inside a locker.

>"Unlock the door" is a padding method, but not a bad one
I dont know man. Maybe the game was just too long for its own good. But it was 80% open the door. Find the key, get the blowtorch, open the door to open the other door, play a shitty minigame to hack the door. Just to get into the next room that welcomes you with another door that desires to be opened.

But yeah, I better stop shitting on it.
I dont think, I know many games that are like A:I actually.

Gotcha. I was talking more about my own experiences with people who do things like that, not trying to offend anyone.

It's one thing if they're grinding Destiny or something, because there's nothing new to going on. But with a lot of games you're just mindlessly completing tasks if you're not engaged in the story and atmosphere.

When I fetch the stick, it's because it holds the key to curing my sick friend's curse. She asked me not to risk my life on her account, but as I looked into the big watery eyes of my dear friend, I knew I couldn't stand by and do nothing. It's for her. I have to get the stick, because I care.

The people I'm talking about fetch the stick because the objective tab says so. They don't care why, they're listening to country music on the Beats headphones and Facebooking on their phone.

It's like it's just a game to them. I can't relate to that kind of mindset.

A trailer to get you hype. It's a pretty damn good survival horror game. Best in the genre in the past decade I think. Too bad PT was canceled, Kojipro was going to make that shit blow your mind. But still, ayyy is pretty good. Not shilling, I honestly think this is a really good game for spooks. It's a bit long tho, and gets very stressful towards the end. The ending is also a bit dissappointing, but it's not bad, it's just very obviously trying to mimic Ridley Scott's ending of the first Alien film.

This is personally the scariest game I ever played growing up. Silent hill 1-3 didn't creep me out as much of this game did (aside from the hospital levels).

The atmosphere in that game is just so unsettling, and those fucking ghosts and hauntings were terrifying. I heard originally it wasn't even suppose to be Silent Hill related.

Though this thread is mainly horror focused, does anyone have any good magic/occult focused games?

I find Dark Souls erie as fuck.
I dont know what it is just the whole vibe and probably the Japanese influences creates a wonderful atmosphere of creep. And those fucking dogs in the lower undead burg. The fucking animation scared the fuck out of me.

DOOM3 used to scare me on my PC . Like right at the beginning when you have to crawl into the airshaft and come facefirst into one of them aliens and it chases you.

Dead Space had some moments too.
Dead Space 2, those one that cant be killed without freezing their ass scares me
:(

I want to play the silent hill collection hd soon. Im sure I will be scared.

Oh god no, 5 is by far the worst in the series. Very dull to play, way ott with the fanservice, weak story with a particularly awful plotline that shits all over FF1 and 3- and worst of all, it's not even scary. I haven't ever been more disappointed in a game.

I liked Dishonored even if it wasn't that great of a game and felt a bit lazy at the end. The worldbuilding and atmosphere was pretty good though. I keep it installed and play it every once in a while just to look around and get inspiration for stuff or just to admire the world. Has a lot to do with Moby Dick and Lovecraftian stuff, which is pretty interesting. Not a horror or spooky game, but an interesting look at desperate measures in a time of crisis.

i mean even if goldsrc had bad graphics it at least had really clear textures and models ya know, whereas SS engine textures/models just look super low res ya know

redpill me on the correct graphics mods (or mods in general) for system shock pls

Think goosbumbs meets teen beat.

Some 30year old sjw cunt goes home to her child hood town and walks around her old house. Now this right here would be scary enough, especially after you see the 20dollet price tag.

But it gets even worse!

See turns out this snowflakes uncle use too whant her to touch his candle stick.but he's been dead for over ten years.....

Wonder you're parents home one more time.
Relive all those angsty teen memory's.
And discover the secret of why you're uncle loved to molest you.

He means realistic in that these kind of zumbas could actually exist, the cordyceps already does that shit to arthropods, this game just presents a semirealistic depiction of it affecting humans, adjusted slightly for gameplay value, of course.

>>18229883

Metro is good, yes. But there's nothing really spoopy about it, even on the hardest difficulty since you know if you're pretty good at the game, you can dispose off enemies pretty quickly.

STALKER is much harder since the game is clunky and janky as shit, even with the Complete mod. That dreaded feeling of "i dont wanna die" is stronger.
>>
>>18265552
Metro gets pretty spoopy when you deal with all the paranormal shit and the Librarians. Another good game is Antichamber, its a more eerie, somewhat nonlinear Portal, with lots of impossible geometry.

>>18265732

It's gets less spoopier after a couple of sessions, and after getting better weapons not much further in the game.

All I ever needed was the combat shotty, a good sneaking and awareness.

The Gorilla thingy were probably the scariest initially but even then after a couple encounters you'd learn how to deal with them.

In STALKER, no matter how prepared, how good of a player you are, well-equipped, the shitty engine will usually fuck something up for you.

I love 'em both, but STALKER is spoopier for me. Just because I can deal with Metro monsters properly, and in STALKER you tend to mess up more.

Metro, a couple of hours in, you're used to it.
STALKER, paranoia because of its crappy engine.

It was the atmosphere. An alien world that truly felt alien, everything felt dangerous, oppressive even. You were very aware that pretty much everything was wrong (even down to the colour palette and character animations). The impressive sound effects coupled with the dramatic action sequences that often caught the player unprepared also added to the tension and got the adrenaline pumping.

It certainly wasn't a terrifying experience that'd keep you up at night, but it was definitely unnerving.
>>
All of you guys are bitches. The only scary game I've ever played is Fatal Frame 3. And that PT demo was good for a bit.

Let's all take a moment to remember how the world was robbed of Guillermo del Toro and Hideo Kojima making a SH game :(
>>
>>18246444
PC port of 2 is okay, but PCSX2 is recommended. But for 3, Team Silent themselves ported it and it's essentially the best version of the game out there. It also doesn't crash like 2 does

Bad Mojo. I'm not even afraid of bugs (I'm a bug enthusiast, in fact) but the atmosphere is fantastically nasty and unsettling.
Also:
Silent Hill 1-3 (Though 2 especially)
Fatal Frame 2
Sanitarium
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream
System Shock 2

And while not a horror game per se Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is a great game with horror themes and some pretty spooky parts. (Like the Ocean House Hotel and the Malkavian mansion)
