911 dispatcher here. I received a call about this two days ago. There weren't any actual clowns but there were social media threats.

What I know is that they won't do it in the ghetto or the deep south. They will get shot. A coworker of mine is a hardcore redneck. He saw it the clown stuff on Facebook and was bragging about all the ammo and No Tress passing signs he bought.

My guess is that it started as viral marketing, and then it became sort of a mass hysteria thing. It makes sense that the movies would deny involvement, since there have been arrest and a genuine public panic; no one wants to be seen as responsible for that because of the possible backlash. There are also probably a few people dressing as clown and scaring people for shits and giggles in the wake of the media attention.

I live in Ohio and there was a clown sighting in a city 30 minutes from me. I live in the middle of bumfuck nowhere and I have a handgun on my night stand at all times, a shotgun for hunting with home defense slugs in my night stand, and a .308 with a loaded magazine ready to go just in case. When I heard about the clown sighting so close I didn't think there was any way that shit would come to my town of maybe 1,000 people, tops, and it's very spread out. But the other night I was walking my girlfriend to her car and I always carry my handgun outside at night, mostly just in case of coyotes, but no fucking joke one of these god damned clowns was across the street just staring at us. She started freaking out but I told her to just guide me back to the door cause I wasn't taking my eyes off this motherfucker.

She ended up staying but couldn't really sleep. That night all of my doors and windows were locked up and all of my guns were loaded and within arms reach (shotgun and .308 usually in gun cabinet). I kept checking through the blinds and the clown was still standing there for about an hour and then the next time I checked he was gone. I checked through every window and poked my head outside through the front and back door and even checked through the garage windows but I couldn't see shit. He apparently never came back but if I see another clown near my house he's getting shot.
