using pendulums is an easy way to talk to spirits in my experience. I don't think it gives them quite as big a door as a ouija board would. It only allows for simple yes/no answers though.

safest way would be to hire a medium. i dunno how much they charge tho, or how to even find one in your area. it takes a certain amount of intuition to be one, otherwise i'd suggest you do it urself. its fairly simple.
