>>18134520
I'll give it a try ;D
>>
>>18134499
Horror, gore, or slasher? It helps if you narrow it down.

I prefer psychological horrors, like 'A Tale of Two Sisters', or 'The Witch', where as some prefer the shockumentary 'Cannibal Holocaust' type films and some prefer the mindless gorefests like 'Hostel' and 'August Underground'.

Try being more specific.

Why?
>>
>>18134897
Would like to see an icerberg of horror films in order of actual fear caused rather than putting crappy fake snuff films at the bottom

like what makes Niku Daruma more challenging than Saw/Hostel bar one being japanese and esoteric
>>
>>18134924
Usually icebergs are based on how inaccessible the items are, either because of content or obscurity.

But yeah an iceberg of horror movies based on fear induced would be great. Although content and obscurity would still play a part.

I'm a huge fan of 80's films, saw Burnt offerings the other day, loved it. Maniac and the first Evil Dead are some of my favourite horror films. But I'm open to pretty much anything. Saw some film a few weeks ago called Messiah of Darkness and it really surprised me.

Pretentious Nonsense for Teenage Edgelords:
>Martyrs
>Antichrist
>A Serbian Film
>120 Days of Salo
>Human Centipede (all of them)
>Irreversible

Entry Level:
>Chromeskull 1&2 (particularly the uncut dvd releases)
>Return of the Living Dead
>Night of the Living Dead (both the original and 90's remake)
>The Thing (original only)
>Cabin Fever (all but the newest)
>The Hills Have Eyes (All of them, but I have nostalgia for the remakes)
>The Mist
>Halloween (Rob Zombie remake)
>The Green Inferno
>House of 1000 Corpses/Devil's Rejects
>Jason Goes to Hell

Mid level:
>The Town that Dreaded Sundown (OG)
>Slither
>Feast 1
>Hatchet
>Masters of Horror (the whole series)
>Ichi the Killer (though not really a horror movie)
>The Howling
>Ginger Snaps 1
>The Hills Have Eyes (Both the originals and the remake)
>Cannibal Holocaust
>The Men Behind the Sun
>Jason X
>Creepshow 2

High Level:
>Hellraiser 1 & 2
>Nightmare on Elm St. 1
>Freddy Vs. Jason
>From Beyond
>Reanimator
>House 1
>Dead Alive (aka Braindead)
>The Fly 1
>Videodrome
>Masters of Horror: Skins (uncut)
>Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (the original sequel)
>Creepshow 1
>>
>>18135248
Oh, otherstuff I just forgot

Pretentious nonsense:
>Halloween 2 (rob zombie remake)
>Ginger Snaps 2
>I spit on your grave (original and all sequels)
>nekromantic (all sequels)
>>
I thought Southbound was pretty good.
>>
>>18135248
I don't really want to see Antichrist or Serbian Film, but I thought Saló was funny, mainly because of the "MANGIA MANGIA" thing.

Green Inferno didn't do it for me, thought it was very slow and didn't spark interest. The Town That Dreaded Sundown seems interesting, want to check it out! A lot of these I haven't seen though. Dead Alive is amazing, can't get enough of it, seen it about 4-5 times already

>>
>>18135270
The green inferno is good because Eli roth pays homage to a lot of italian cannibal explotation movies, like cannibal ferrox and cannibal holocaust. It's also less-than-subtly hilarious, particularly when you listen to him talk about how he really just wants to murder a bunch of slacktivists in horrific ways.

>>18135277
And why would you say that?
>>
What are the best mokumentaries? Is A Hole In The Head just a meme?
>>
Recently I watched They Look Like People. It was honestly the scariest movie I have ever seen. It really stuck with me. It's not a really "paranormal" horror movie though. Some of the acting is annoying and the production value isn't great but the horror is so, so effective. It's not jump scare shit either.

>>
>>18134691
Hey, anon. Not sure if youre still lurking, but we seem to have pretty similar taste. Psychological horrors are best horrors. Have any other good recommendations? If you havent seen Jacob's Ladder, I would check that out. There are also certain spots in more well known movies that arent psychological the whole way through, but have specific moments exemplifying aspects of psychological horror that I find really spoopy. Like when people witness something that deeply and abruptly challenges what they know to be real. Scenes from The Shining, The Exorcist, and even the War of the Worlds movie from the 2000s.

what standard are you using to base these on? Or are you just trolling? the hills have eyes is stupid, Jason X is so bad that i want to believe its a satire/ comedy horror, same for Freddy vs Jason. The fly is not good or scary, just stupid and weird. As for other movies, yes Martyrs' plot is a little stupid, but it is a really well-made movie. A Serbian film is a great social dialogue as well as original, yes it is over the top with its gore, but its about making snuff films.

Mostly it explains trepanation, what the 'benfits' of it is, and how the people interviewed did it themselves at home, save for one chick that had to have it done due to an accident. It's worth a watch either way, interesting stuff.

Dogs are the hieroglyphs of blind emotion, inferiority, servile attachment, and gregariousness—the attributes of commonplace, stupidly passionate, and intellectually and imaginatively undeveloped men. Cats are the runes of beauty, invincibility, wonder, pride, freedom, coldness, self-sufficiency, and dainty individuality—the qualities of sensitive, enlightened, mentally developed, pagan, cynical, poetic, philosophic, dispassionate, reserved, independent, Nietzschean, unbroken, civilised, master-class men. The dog is a peasant and the cat is a gentleman.

It was honestly a great movie devoid of many horror movie traps we all know and hate. It was more of a very dark horror movie period piece. The kind of people that didn't like it seem to overwhelmingly be those super fun people that go into a movie (or anything, really) wanting to hate it and hanging on any little detail they can to aggressively not like things and to talk down to people that do. Those people are sad people, and should not be trusted.

Not the anon you're replying to, but I can mostly agree with what you're saying. Compared to most of the fucking garbage 'horror' movies shat out now-a-days, the witch was damn good. All in all I liked the movie. That being said, there were parts that pissed me off, and I think it could've been much better had it of been 20-30 minutes longer. In my shit opinion, I think they should've went back to the town, maybe went on a witch hunt or something of the likes, and more slowly eased into the craze phase. What pissed me off about the movie was the way the just kinda wrapped it up and said fuck it. Dad gets plunked on the head with some logs and croaks, girl stabs mommy up. Could've done much better and they could've went anywhere with the movie and made it even better. The best part of the movie was the genuine uneasiness, and general feeling of dread which wasn't accomplished by shitty jump scares like 99% of other horror films made today. Good movie/10. Would watch again.

I like special effects, particularly practical special effects. Horror movies aren't "scary" after you've seen a few, the issue is more so that the vast majority focus on boring atmospheric nonsense, and that's good to watch in theaters, but at home it's always underwhelming.

Some of my favorites:

- Cannibal Holocaust: Just go in with the knowledge that the animal cruelty depicted was real, and also try to go in with the mindset of the an 80s viewer.

- The Exorcist: Never ceases to scare me, absolute classic, watch alone in the dark with a high volume.

- [REC]: It's a Spanish documentary about Firefighters, really interesting stuff.

- Prince of Darkness: Not the Scariest horror I've ever seen, but I just really love it. It feels very 80s, and is a must see for Carpenter fans.

- The Host: Sometimes sad, often funny, not really scary, but still great fun.

- The Girl Next Door: Torture porn, but it actually happened.

- Martyrs: Torture porn, but it didn't happen. Still an intriguing mystery, IMO, the first half is really quite good.

Troll Hunter is pretty decent. It's sort of a satire of found footage movies, but it's also capable of being slightly scary at times. That final troll was fucking cool though.

Suspira's atmosphere is amazing, but many of the effects really haven't aged well.

I saw this movie on Netflix a few years ago, it involves a group of college kids staying at an old mansion, there was some weird incest-type deal going on with the main characters, and I remember the opening scene the brother tries to drown the sister. >Jason X
This movie came out at the wrong time. Ten years earlier it would have been an instant classic, ten years later people would appreciate it in the vein of sharknado. It's over the top self-aware schlock that still manages to be genuinely entertaining and is extremely self-referential. Again, outside of the CGI, the practical special effects are on point, and it's better than almost every Friday the 13th movie.

>Ten years earlier it would have been an instant classic
Not him, but I can almost agree to this. The best parts of Jason X were the few moments when it was deconstructing the series, like when it explicitly states that the reason Jason keeps coming back from the dead is literally banging teenagers, since that was what got him killed in the first place, or when they send him in a hologram back to what feels like a satire of Crystal Lake. If the film had more of that on top of being a typical slasher film, it would probably be seen of as a classic. Then again, horror films becoming self aware of what they are and criticizing it hasn't always gone over well with horror fans, i.e. Wes Craven's A New Nightmare.

The best Friday the 13th was still Part two.

>>
>>18144864
Yes and no. I think Ichi the Killer is more of a dark comedy than a horror movie. It's funny and insightful. Imprint was compelling, but just a little too close to torture porn for my liking. It's the same reason I don't like Hostel. Sure, it has components of everything I like, but I just can't get into it because every time I watch it I can't help but think someone somewhere is masturbating to it.

I think you are thinking of Part 3.
Part 2 was bag head Jason and Jinny, the best protagonist the series ever got.
>>
>>18144873
My mistake, you're right. Actually, I mashed the two together. I know the original is the one where his mom is the killer, and the second is the one with his mom's decapitated head in the basement, but you're right, I visualize part 3 Jason in the setting of part 2.

I need your help /x/

I love horror films, but I only love good horror films, and sadly enough, horror today is 90% garbage. I want to be genuinely scared shitless. Jump scare movies aren't scary, and gore isn't scary as well, when there's fucking ISIS today uploading HD videos of them beheading people.

What I love is mostly atmospheric stuff, psychological horror maybe. Stuff that makes you think and go: 'Damn, that is really fucked up'

I think Noroi: The Curse is the best film I've seen so far that fits in this category. Kairo was also really amazing. Curious for your recs!

Thanks for all 6 of those based anon, saved em all.

Interesting to note how comedy seeped it's way into some great horror films, especially in the '10's. I have no problem with that, horror films are meant to be their own kind of "fun", it's all entertainment after all. Sometimes comedy being blended in makes for a better film. Look at John Dies at the End, for example. The book was scarier than the movie but both give you an uneasy feeling despite the nonchalant humor throughout.
