The symbols and depictions dont neccessarily give information or even truth. Its a form or art, philosophy and poetry that attempts to allow you to percieve the infinite.

The tree and other images such at the flower of life, kabbalah and others simply try to show you the interdependency of all things and how they are connected and intertwine. The complexity of which is dependent on the authors desire to illustrate that which they are trying to explain.

Tl; dr
You an the observer of reality, and you are created from that same reality which you are trying to observe. Patterns allow you to make sense of these things.

Sorry forgot to add..the tree usually represents is the spine, the snake (which is usually two) is our muscles and flesh that wrap around the spine to allow us to be animated. And the top and bottom represent duality.

But duality is an illusion, u have to join the seemingly separate aspects of reality to become one again with the universe rather that a separate entity somewhat misplaced in this world, which we are not.
