Is anyone familiar with short stories that are centered around trying to identify something threatening from a distance?

There's a pasta or two with reptilians that are pretty good. Some news stories from Vietnam and the like, don't have the links on me. Hope somebody recalls this and can provide where I've failed.
A common element of my dreams is taking notice of something that seems a bit out of place, and quickly regretting that I had, along with something that a ufologist by the name of Jenny Randles referred to as the "oz effect."
It's the subjective feeling of noticing something extremely out of the ordinary which other people don't take notice of, through not being present at all in a situation where people would normally be, through the observer and the thing they're observing being seemingly invisible to folks that are present, or through others doing everything in their power to not observe the thing that is out of the ordinary.
My biggest problem is normally that you can't really tell that something is out of the ordinary until you're close enough for it to do something, especially in situations where something is in the way, and conceals whatever the thing is in question until you see it five feet from you in an alley, or around the corner of a building just as you're turning around it.
