Lol that's not photoshop, there are giant jellyfish:

>>18109028
It is shopped. It is a real jelly. It is very large. The diver in the original photo is behind the jelly, and the shooped it to put him in front to make the jelly look far bigger.
Let's keep this one going faggots, I'm getting soft over here!
Let's not forget, right after the dark zone with all the anglers and fluorescent shrimp and take time to appreciate the next step before the volcanic vents, this zone is most likely hiding some pretty crazy shit

Takign a trip in case anyone has questions regarding the critters I'm gonna post. I did my second last college project on Abyssopelagic animals (got 10/10) and will post facts about them along with the spoopy nightmare-inducing smiley faces.
Pic related is the Dragonfish. The blushy anime cheeks are in fact photophores (chemical induced light spots).
Spoopy fact: Have you ever noticed most deep sea animals glow blue/green/white? Well, those are communication colors.
This fucker right here has red light because red is virtually invisible down there (shortest wavelength), granting them an invisible flashlight.
Which means it could be right in front of it's prey with the lights on them and the prey wouldn't even notice.
>>18111319
That's a Open Sea thread, not a Deep Sea.
Humans barely went where we're talking about so I doubt anyone could share stories on the other thread.
Another type of Dragonfish. The beard-on-a-string acts as a lure for it's prey.
Good thing they're a couple inches long and cannot survive in zones closer to the surface, otherwise we'd be royally fucked.
I personally love how black and glossy they are.
Another Black Dragonfish. Their real name is Idiacanthus Atlanticus in case anyone's interested.
Look at the friendly smile of this Unidentified Anglerfish.
This gorgeous beast is the Stoplight Loosejaw. It lacks the "bottom" of the mouth, with only a jaw and a hinge-like structure.
You know when you try to throw a punch in a pool and you can't since water is hard at high speeds? The jaw-only design on the Stoplight Loosejaw exists so it can snap shut faster than the prey can escape.

>>18107574
There's always sharks about m8. They're friendly fellas. Except bulls, tigers and great whites. You get the fuck out of the water if you see one of them lads.
I bet if every surfer put that kind of camera I their board you'd see pictures like that way more often than you think possible. Mr. Shark is going to have a peep at anything that looks like dinner, including surfboards, but then he's going to see that it's not a yummy seal, it's some does not taste good shit and he fucks off.
My personal theory is that the sharks that do attack humans are a bit retarded maybe.
>>18112337
Or perhaps they develop a taste for them.
>>18109040
Post the original, then.
>>18111917
I know a guy who was diving in the azores and one of the party got completely btfo by a sperm whale's fluke as it dived down. Shattered the woman's pelvis, tonne of internal bleeding, the whole ball of chalk. Definitely not what you want when you're 50km from shore.
Diving over abyssal water is one of the spoopiest things for me. There's this overwhelming like gravity to the thing. You know you're floating, you know you're safe(ish), but it always feels like either you're going to fall to the bottom, or something is going to come out of the depths towards you.
>>18112355
That's possible. There was a female white tip which seemed to be targeting tourists in sharm al sheik a few years ago. The same one attacked like half a dozen people I think, so maybe she liked her meat marinaded in suntan oil? Or she could have been retarded.

I was trained by diving in the North Sea for 5 years.
Dived Loch Ness too.
North Sea is cold and dark.
Loch Ness on the other hand, was like I was diving in the Abyss. The water is so brown and murky. I can't liken it to anything else.
The last of my dives in the loch, I got to a point in the loch where I didn't know which way was up and which way was down.
When my air was running low, I began to gradually make my way up toward the surface, only to find out I was actually going down deeper instead.
Long story short, I had to be hauled up back onto the boat via rope and thrown into the decompression chamber. I don't know how I got out of that one to be honest.
Petrified of deep water ever since. Quit the navy and most of my aquatic activities.
Anyway this thread is about the ocean not lochs, sorry if I went a little off topic.

No, the visibility or rather lack thereof. The water in the loch is whiskey coloured toward the surface. But go just feet downwards and it is pitch black.
I am not the only diver to have made the same mistake. Diving is not terribly common there for this reason.
These are freedivers and it is the only video I can find that shows what I am talking about, about how the water goes pitch black:

>>18126651
I'm someone without any experience about diving, si I don't doubt your claims, but also I don't understand them, so if you could enlighten me I'd appreciate it.
I mean, bubbles go upward, stuff you let go goes downwards, and you can feel if you're upright or facing downwards, even with your eyes closed, due to the internal ear.
But I'm guessing lots of stuff just don't work the same at high pressure in the pitch darkness.
>>18126987
It's possible he was using a rebreather, they don't release bubbles, and you don't really have a lot of things to just drop. Equilibrium is extremely distorted underwater at a certain depth.
>>18126759
I hate algae too. But the beach also has plenty of hermit crabs, so it evens out.

You're at neutral buoyancy and if you're in pitch black your inner ear has a hard time working things out. It's not uncommon to mistake up and down underwater.
I've done one cave dive in my life and at one point I kicked up some silt and the vis went down to "literally cannot see myself". If there hasn't been a rope I wouldn't have been able to reorient myself at all. Literally couldn't tell which way I was facing. Kills loads of people

The smaller versions of this squids are extremely intelligent.
I wonder, how smart is this one.
They use bioluminescence to signal each other, and looks like this one, it's using it to signal the camera.

Same with the 90° tentacles on this one, it's doing it on purpose, to look menacing.

Dark water is spoopy as hell. I was just tubing on the Sante Fe river in Florida last weekend, and the water is a dark, dark, brown there. I was swimming alongside my tube down the river, stuck my head underwater and got freaked out beacuse even a foot or two deep you can't really see the sunlight and therefore can't tell which way is up visually.
I also feel a mild "scared of heights" feeling in clear, deep springs here where there's a huge, steep dropoff from 4 feet deep to 30 feet deep and you swim out over it. I love it though, Florida Springs are the best.
Oh yeah I also got freaked out there last weekend at the river, the water was pretty dark since it was where the spring water met the river water, I was treading water enjoying myself when a giant black animal swam right under me, I was sure it was a gator for a second but it turned out to be someone with SCUBA gear. Motherfucker cane out of nowhere.

There was a time when it was unanimously agreed that the bloop could not have come from anything other than an organic organism.
Are the NOAA the kind of retards who rub shit in their hair or just the kind that make a funny noise every now and then?
Screw it, I say organism. After all, dose it relay matter? Dose it matter if dinosaurs were lizards? If Pluto is a planet? If scientists want to ignore things like the Vostok ice core, then I don't relay care if it was some ice in the water making the same funny noises they do.

Yeah. Deepwater fish aren't dangerous, though.
Their muscles are much too watery to do any damage, and they don't much calcium down there, so their teeth are very weak.
If you pissed one off, it would probably tear itself apart before it could even pierce your diveskin.

I hope not. One of Japan's aquariums has a couple swimming around, and they're one of the most gorgeous things to see just swimming around.

When I used to dive in Crystal springs, not far from Tampa, we used to try and sneak up on people whee were sitting on inflatables or just swimming and tickle their ankles.
It freaks anybody out. I don't care if you're a fucking marine, a hand on your ankle in deep water is going to make you piss your pants.
