I think any effect is merely the manifestation of the will of the users.
I don't mind hearing stories about ouija boards, but the second someone pronounces it weejee off goes the video/radio.

You sit down with the subconscious want to see some exciting movement of the board, so your hands start moving slightly without consciously moving them. This happens with a number of things. Your hands will subconsciously move towards an image of food while you're hungry too.
