Manatees are the accepted explanation, but it's not a particularly convincing one. People latch on to it because they're certain that mythological creatures are just fantasy. Manatees are the known aquatic mammal that fits least badly. Which is still pretty bad, because they're fat, bald, and dog-faced.

Not that men don't fuck worse, but without serious beer goggles they're aware that it's worse. Sailors drink, and that could be some of the explanation. Sailors also lie, and that's frankly a better one. I'd sooner accept someone was straight up hallucinating than that he'd genuinely mistaken a manatee for a woman.

Another possibility is optical distortion. Distance plus waves can do things with light, just anything (a fish, a piece of flotsam) might momentarily appear to be something else (due to pareidolia), and if you already believed in mermaids you might call that a sighting.

I used to work as a commercial diver and alot of the older guys SWORE to have seen mermaids. I have had weird stories but no pretty hunnies with fins

I've actually been craving some good mermaid media lately. They are really underutilized in storytelling. There are obvious environmental challenges, unless the story takes place along shorelines or unless the mermaid gains legs (boring, not even a mermaid anymore). A story that really went in depth into a possible merfolk society would be interesting but I figure its challenging to get right and perhaps not that interesting outside of visual mediums.

Imagine it: cities made of coral, forests made of seaweed, heat from geothermal vents, pet otters, riding seahorses. Could be beautiful.
