Ancient Neolithic Structure Discovered in Scotland

A ysterious stone structure has been uncovered at one of Scotland's most famous ring of standing stones.

Archaeologists digging at the Ring on Brodgar on Orkney say that the layout of a series of newly-found slabs is unlike anything previously found on the islands. The slabs, known as orthostats, were unearthed on the last day of this year's excavations of a complex of Neolithic buildings in the area. They were buried underneath what's been dubbed Scotland's "largest Neolithic rubbish dump", and would have been part of a structure measuring almost 10m wide, comprised of slabs of up to 4m in length.

Experts say that the find could be the oldest of the buildings under covered so far, and might be be 5,000 years old. However, they are mystified as to why the structure was covered over by the huge midden, and have speculated that it could possibly be a chambered tomb.

Ancient Egyptian Tool Found in English Wardrobe

A 4500-year-old wooden maul, or mallet, used by Egyptian craftsmen, had been stored in the wardrobe in Derbyshire to protect it from sunlight. It was originally discovered during World War Two in a cave near Cairo by a relative of the owner. At 4500 years old, the mallet dates to about the same time as the Pyramids at Giza, built in the fourth dynasty from 2575 to 2465 BC, although the location where it was unearthed is about 17km away from the famous manmade monuments.

The item, which goes to auction in October, has a pre-sale estimate of £2,000-£3,000.

Massive Snakeskin Supports 'Wessie' Rumors

Discovered by a member of the public at around 3pm on Saturday, the skin has since attracted the attention of local police officers who have been working to photograph and document it. The find has been linked to reports of a particularly large snake nicknamed "Wessie" that has been sighted several times in the area. While it isn't clear whether the skin belongs to that particular snake, if it does then it would corroborate claims that the creature is over 12 feet long.

"Westbrook Police Officers responded, photographed, collected, and tagged the skin which will be examined in attempts to determine what type of snake shed it and what risks this type of snake poses to public safety," the department wrote on its Facebook page.

According to cryptozoologist Bill Brock however the snakeskin discovery may be a bit suspect. "That thing was laid out in a way that kind of suggests that someone just literally laid it there, and I’m pretty sure that’s how the snakeskin got there, but I do think Wessie is real, and I do think Wessie is out at the Riverbank Park somewhere," he said.
