seems to suggest that he suddenly realized he was dead and through that realization he starts drifting off (or flying), possibly to a "real" afterlife and not just an extended lucid dream.

I think some people would prefer to have an infinite lucid dream, or they believe they would, but when actually faced with it they would eventually have an urge to move on. After all, how do they know any of the people they are meeting or any of the scenes they're in aren't just figments of their own imagination? This could cause one to feel lonely.
