There is a Cornish legend about a monster called the Tuss. It likes to dwell in caves and when it gets angry it grows to twice its normal size and spits milky effluent.

If it's an old underground passage leading to mines it'll be something called a Knocker. Trickster creatures that would knock on the walls of mines to either draw miners to their doom or warn them of danger, depending on their whimsical nature that day.

Best not to worry about it, they're not inherently dangerous or vindictive enough to follow you, though if you had any plans to do any caving there, maybe don't.
