Geologists Find Evidence of China’s Great Flood

According to legend, Chinese civilization began with a Great Flood. The floodwaters covered the plains of northern and central China for 22 years, until a ruler named Yu led a great dredging project that returned the river to its original channels. For 1,000 years, the story of the Great Flood and Yu’s founding of Chinese civilization were handed down as oral history, before finally entering the written record in the first millennium BCE. With no hard evidence of Xia or the flood, however, scholars have long debated whether these events actually happened or were purely the stuff of legend. Now, it turns out that the Great Flood may have been a real natural disaster that struck the Yellow River valley in about 1920 BCE.

A team of geologists, led by Wu Qinglong of Nanjing Normal University, discovered the remains of a landslide that, thousands of years ago, dammed up the Yellow River where it flows through Jishi Gorge in northern China’s Qinghai Province. The natural dam would have been somewhere around the size of Hoover Dam; it completely blocked the river, and the water that built up behind it eventually formed a lake 650 feet deep.

The researchers calculated that when the landslide dam finally gave way, it unleashed a torrent of 300,000 to 500,000 cubic meters of water per second. "To put that into perspective, that’s roughly equivalent to the largest flood ever measured on the Amazon River, the world’s largest river. It’s among the largest known floods to have happened on Earth during the past 10,000 years," said Darryl Granger, a Purdue University geologist.

Rare Maya Burial Temple Discovered in Belize

The Maya people produced some awesome pyramids like the Castillo at Chichen Itza and the temple at Tikal. But unlike Egypt and other parts of the world, these pyramids were designed more for religious reasons than for royal burials. That makes the recent discovery of an elaborate temple-grave in western Belize a huge find.

Jaime Awe, director of the Belize Valley Archaeological Reconnaissance Project, led a team of researchers who discovered the tomb while excavating the stairway on a structure in Xunantunich, a Maya archaeological site on the Mopan River. Inside, they found human remains later identified as belonging to a well-muscled man in his 20s inside the tomb. Jade beads, bones from jaguars and deer, ceramic pots, obsidian blades and other objects were placed around the body.

The tomb represents an extraordinary find, if only for its construction. At 4.5 meters by 2.4 meters, it is "one of the largest burial chambers ever discovered in Belize," Awe said. It appears to differ dramatically from other grave sites of the era. Most Maya tombs were built "intrusively," as additions to existing structures, but the new tomb was built simultaneously with the structure around it – a common practice among cultures such as the ancient Egyptians, but uncommon among the Mayas.

"In other words, it appears that the temple was purposely erected for the primary purpose of enclosing the tomb," Awe said. "Except for a very few rare cases, this is not very typical in ancient Maya architecture."

The find is the first royal tomb discovered at Xunantunich, and is one of the largest in the country.

The Curse Of Julia Brown: Manchac Swamp’s Voodoo Priestess Haunts Louisiana After Killing a Whole Town

Julia Brown was a well-respected magic practitioner in her small town of Frenier, Louisiana. If someone got sick they had two options – they could make the journey into New Orleans, or they could turn to Julia for a supernatural healing. It wasn’t uncommon for Julia to travel around the village performing rituals to help with childbirth, fight off infections, and cure illnesses, and more often than not, the afflicted would recover quickly. By all accounts, whatever strange powers Julia was harnessing – they worked.

Though the townsfolk respected Julia, they also began to take her for granted. When she started to feel as if her neighbors were using her, many of them demanding her help without asking, Julia Brown developed a bit of a mean streak, and began scaring the ungrateful locals by predicting when terrible things were about to happen to them. Whether she was foretelling future events or placing a curse, it seemed that Julia always knew when something bad was coming to the town of Frenier.

On September 28, 1915, Julia passed away. In the final weeks leading up to her death she was often heard singing, “One day I’m gonna die, and I’m gonna take all of you with me,” over and over again.

In the first half, author and researcher L.A. Marzulli discussed the Nephilim, giants, hybrids, and various anomalous skulls and creatures. In the latter half, psychic, medium, and spiritual teacher Vincent Genna discussed his work and the messages he receives and deciphers from the Other Side.


Thursday: Natural Supplementation/ Irish Mythology & Psychopaths

In the first half, pharmacist and nutritionist Benjamin Fuchs offered tips on diet and supplements in order to combat various physical ailments and health problems. In the second half, Author Thomas Sheridan detailed what he's discovered about psychopaths, and also shared his research on ancient Irish mythology, the Druids, fairies, and giants.


Friday: Animal Communication

Former Deputy Sheriff in Bailey, Colorado, Karen Anderson experienced heightened awareness honing her intuitive skills on the force dealing with life-threatening situations while on patrol. During this time she rediscovered her childhood gift of animal communication and has been helping others to bridge the divide and understand the mind of animals. Open Lines followed.

Purportedly reduced to cannibalism to survive through the winter, only half of the original group reached California the following year. Their story quickly spread, and before long the term “Donner Party” became synonymous with one of humanity’s most ingrained taboos.

Regular readers may have noticed that occasionally I will omit a podcast, generally if they haven't put out a new episode that week, of if the episode of the week isn't generally topical to the paranormal/true crime/science genre that this magazine leans towards.
I added the Euphomet podcast/radio show under the suggestion of a reader, but I've decided today that they're the first podcast that I'm going to cut out. While they may have some interesting episodes, their website is a fucking mess, their content is sporadic, and their general disorganization just makes it a pain to try and catalog them each week. They did manage to put out an episode this week, but they couldn't even put up fucking show notes on it. Basically, I gave them the benefit of the doubt, and now I'm done with 'em. If you like their podcast, you can continue to occasionally find their content at www.euphomet.com but as for me and The /x/ Files, you ain't gonna be seeing them round no more.
