But ended up being a shitload worse than Dark Corners of the Earth.

This game is basically Classic Resident Evil with better controls and is more lovecraftian than romero. You play as many different characters throughout the ages of man. And each new character unravels more clues as to just what the elder gods are up to.

If you want to play it though you'll need a GC or early Wii with GC ports cause it's not on any other system. The game itself is pretty rare too so good luck with hitting up your local second hand video game store.

So as a kid...There was a game on PS1. Was a platformer of sorts. But the guys I was playing was wearing a top hat and had this grin and it was kind of dark in the background but I wasn't sure what I was doing. All I remember feeling about it was that I regret not playing more of it....

The first couple Thief series games were so goddamn good. The thrill of hiding from not just guards but monsters, the atmosphere, all of it was perfect, and of course as the series progresses you come to see how much the occult and dark magic played a role in that world. The Hammerites were a strong analogy for occult organizations that rule the world, both military, religious and political.

We take this game for granted now, but when it came out, Diablo was incredible. The music, the storylines, the armies of hell. Done more perfectly than any game had ever done before, and it seemed that the sequels didn't have quite the same effect as the original. The atmosphere of the original was more depressing, which was good for spookyness.

The Sanctity of this place has been fouled.

Remember The Butcher?

Diablo was Gothic as fuck.

Basically, in Outcast, you're a journalist who has gone to record a mental asylum that has been abandoned.

In the DLC (set before the original game) you work for the asylum and see the events leading up to it being abandoned.

No weapons, jumpy as fuck, can only run and hide.

From the original side scrolling beat 'em up where you play as a young man who's transformed into a Jason Voorhees alike rampaging through the ultimate haunted house filled with every possible gruesome horror monster imaginable, to the second two (more of the same) to the bizarre, flawed, metal themed remake for the PS3/360 generation which is still a lot of fun and well worth a play.

Alien: Isolation.

I could see why it wouldn't be up everyone's alley, but holy shit did I have hours of literal spine-tingling fun playing this.

I love the "hunted by a monster you can't get rid of" concept, makes it so much more tense.

Execution wasn't perfect, starts getting old for most people when they're stuck in a cupboard for five minutes and the alien just won't fuck off. But if you can enjoy stealth gameplay with a slower pace and an underpowered protagonist, it's awesome.

I remember it coming out because I was going to the game store to get something else, I forget what though, but anyway they had a big ad campaign running for condemned 2, and the cover of the game was everywhere. don't know if it was any good or not but it was a pretty big spectacle for a pretty average popularity series, I didn't particularly enjoy the original after playing the demo, but that's probably just me.

shit, remember when game stores were a thing? it's been 8 years.

not him but from my point of view it does raise an eyebrow. the original mod version was developed for years and years out of their own pocket, and was free to download. But when valve allowed it onto the steam store for wider exposure, it costs more than you would expect for a previously free product. It's probably valve demanding an extra percentage of sales because of the content within. either way the devs are pocketing quite a lot of money from new gamers and old gamers alike, I see no reason for xen to have taken this long other than the answer from >>17995501

It did have some decent puzzles and it was an enjoyable experience but honestly it could have been SO much more.

The Fallout series lets you choose to play as hero or villain, with variable levels of "karma" affected by your actions. GTA allows you to be pretty sadistic, obviously. You can effectively play as a serial killer. Star Wars: KOTOR lets you choose the dark side, determined by how you play.

In Rampage you play as a giant monster, the aim is to smash up city blocks and eat people.

>>
>>18021193
KOTOR is a bit dated but engrossing fun once you get to the first city and beyond. Lots to explore as you get into it, and a pretty good companion system that lets you play as your companions. Unfortunately it doesn't let you attack absolutely anyone like Fallout does, only hostiles. But you can sometimes start shit during dialogue with NPCs.

The combat is turn based, but has a good system based on stats and modifiers. The force aspect is a long time coming but worth the wait.

If you get bored of slogging through the story to get to the cool shit like lightsabers and force attacks, there's a good save editor that's easy to install and use.

Minecraft.
"Ohoho!" you think. "Legos with green dickmen, sure, that'll be scary."

But no. Night falls, and suddenly you're in a goddamn survival horror. Explosions ruin hours of work, and then you're picked off by arrows shot out of the dark, or some horrible groaning revenant.

And when you're loaded enough, confident enough, you build a gate into Hell itself. And you're fine, maybe, at first. Then fiery attacks from all sides. You jump to avoid, and fall right into a pool of lava.

You awake safe in your bed, but everything's lost. Your best gear, everything. And night has fallen. And they're banging on the door again.

This is kind of off-topic but does anyone else feel like something happened to Nintendo after about 2000? With the exception of possibly Pikmin most of their games after that point seemed uninspired or disappointing. Wind Waker had some good ideas but it was nothing compared to it's predecessors, and Twilight Princess was good but kinda bland. Mario Sunshine and later Mario Galaxy both feel like a step backwards from SM64. Aside from that nearly all of their other properties like Metroid and Starfox were made by other studios. I don't know exactly what it was but something about Nintendo died at the end of the 90's.

It's not even edgy, it's like, 'how much cocaine was Shigeru Miyamoto or whoever on at the time this scene was conceptualized?'

Actually, I read an interview that the guy who storyboarded LoZ:TP (who is now dead) would sometimes just do things and not tell anyone why he did them. The example used in the interview in question was Zant's neck crack in the end scene. I bet that LSD Links scene is another example of that.

Twilight Princess is one of the better Zelda's in my opinion, I didn't care much for the story or the setting but the dungeon design was fantastic.

Have two copies of this, my moms got me it about 12 years ago and my gamecube got stolen so I never got passed the second mission, then a mate of mine gave me his gamecube and this and the fucker asked for it back to sell to get some money to give his junkie gf, again never got passed second mission. Then I hear all about how its one of the best survival horrors around.
Some things are not meant to be.

It is quite hard to find. check abandonware sites. I had downloaded it a few years back on demonoid. I no longer have it though.
Also there was the Blair Witch trilogy.

I'd say both Phantasmagoria and Realms of the Haunting, surprisingly neither of which I've seen mentioned yet. Both have some flaws but scared me quite a bit in my time.

And seriously Bioshock? Imo it was terrible, no comparison should even be made to system shock because those games were actually good, not a cheesy sellout AAA garbage title.

>>
>>18032127
Not that guy, but system shock 2 beats out all the bioshock games. Number one is remembered for the aesthetic and 'Muh twist', and people forget the numerous tacky mechanics it introduced simply to beat out Half Life 2. Bioshock 2, nobody remembers (Despite being my favorite of the three), still a pretty 'eh' game because it chucked out a bunch of what bogged down the first game, but attempted to streamline what it had. Generally forgettable.

Then there's Call of duty: Racism simulator. Remembered only for waifus and 'Muh commentary'

Yes I am triggered

There are a lot of enemies inspired by lovecraftian shit, they just seem to be the ones who are most far gone into the mutation. Also, the setting is very lovecraftian.
>>
>>18032525
You're correct, but you're correct in the way it's inspired by something like the Derleth wing of the cthulhu 'mythos'. lovecraft fans will get triggered because it doesn't stay true to the original literature, I can empathize though.

sticking tentacles on something and keeping it in the dark doesn't make something lovecraftian, yaknow?
