Yeah, but it's an important lesson. Occultists are prone to manias and delusions, some of them dangerous. Thelema seems to breed neo-feudalists for example, not in great numbers, but enough to give one pause. If they've carefully studied and engaged Crowley's material, they seem somewhat more likely to harbor extremist ideals.

But there is some good and suggestive literature, like Gibson's, Count Zero, or Zelazny's Amber series. There are doubtless others. Phillip K Dick, probably. For my generation, for sure, I'd include Wilson and Shea's, Illuminatus! trilogy.
