Madness is the inability of the brain to function properly. Alas this doesnt preclude the fact that in this bizarro function, many lucid and actually genius ideas may arise as the process of thought is usually uninhibited by many restricting factors (social, economic, emotional, you name it). True. To add to what you said, actual research and treatment of insanity started quite recently. We still are a long ways of understanding fully the workings and connections of the brain with the psyche. In many cases, everything appears quite ordinary biologically, while the person suffers from indescribable conditions, wherein any explanation including your own in the OP becomes a possibility. It is fascinating.
