Very good horror movie. I understand this is a remake if I'm not mistaken, but it's still better than a lot of the stuff that has come out in recent years.

Beyond the Black Rainbow was a trip. Pure mind fuck, awesome, awesome movie. Very weird.

It was too much for my girlfriend so I had to come back and watch it through by myself when she wasn't around.

It was on Netflix, but it isn't anymore. Worth buying, I'm sure you could find a stream or something if you poked around.

Not a movie.. but really good.
Stranger Things is an excellent series.
There's some scary parts, and the history overall is really good.
To me, it felt like kind of combination between the Super 8 movie, and the Elfen Lied anime.
Plus, some Carpenter and Cronenberg stuff..
Definitely a good watch.
It's only 8 episodes long.

Its just stupid...not really scary or anything. And just so fucking slow. Mind you, I've watched several "slow" horror movies that I loved, like the shining for instance, but The Witch is just slow without creating any eeire or creepy atmosfere. Its just a slow, boring, and not at all frightening movie.
>>
>>17963818
The movie is literally nothing BUT atmosphere

"Eggers chilling debut is a small masterpiece of atmosphere"
"This is a film that conjures it's scares not from sharp jumps, but from the eerie hostility of the untamed American wilderness"
"Eggers is extremely discreet-the things you don't see are far more horrifying that those you do"
"It's a creepy little gem and it's imagery will stay with you long after you've left the theater"

This is just a handful of the innumerable critic reviews that praise this movie because of how well it builds the atmosphere

You should either watch this again and see if you feel the same way or admit you are a plebeian who doesn't know shit about film

Different anon, and hey I've seen the movie twice, once alone and then with friends. The problem is not with people praising the atmosphere, but with those that praise it as being the holy grail of horror movies or smth. It sure got a lot of things right, but it went nowhere with them.

It doesn't matter how well directed/edited the movie was when the story was just a clusterfuck. Maybe they did want to have a movie with a whatever script/story and show how well they could do with the right cinematography, and there may be people who like that sort of thing. And it's perfectly ok to enjoy that aspect of the movie.

It's just wrong to label it as greatest horror ever. Now, when you say you didn't like The Witch, everyone goes "OH SO YOU WANTED A SLASHER JUMPSCARES AM I RIGHT", but that couldn't be farther from truth. I hate slashers, and my favorite movies don't have a single fucking jumpscare (exception: The Thing, with that blood testing scene). I still think they screwed up by trying to shoehorn all witch tales they could find into a single plot, it became just a mess.

The movie is good as maybe, idk, something related to religion, philosophy and historical folk beliefs, but not as horror, not even as suspense.
>>
>>17965396
You honestly just have a misguided kind of bad taste, anon. Sorry you didn't enjoy that fantastic movie.

Fucking imbeciles with no appreciation for film as an art. The Witch is one of the most well made films in decades, let alone horror films; it's objective technical impressiveness is an inarguable fact, regardless of your contrarian hipster attitudes. It's like saying the Room is a good movie, or the Godfather is a bad one; you are objectively wrong. Call the Godfather your least favourite movie of all time, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it, but if you're trying to argue it is a bad film, you are simply wrong - no two ways about it. Same goes for the Witch. It is incredibly well made, and your opinion doesn't change that.

Yeah you quoted some pretentious douche nozzles as if that means dick. Every retard can be movie critic these days, no knowledge of film theory is required. That the lowest of low in the world of appeal to authority. But i guess that is easier that articulating your own analysis because that actually requires having your own opinions.
>>
>>17966767
Why would anyone give credence to the opinion of an anonymous poster on a Mongolian basket weaving forum? I know in order for me to really consider any of the claims that go beyond mere opinions that I read on this site there needs to be credible sources backing it.

Even though people's opinions of movies are subjective, there are still portions that are objective. For example, an objective fact is that the witch does atmosphere very well. In fact, that is what it does best. Just the natural lighting they used and primarily filming in bleak daylight and flickering candle does a great job at setting the tone for the whole film. The dreary, dense and somewhat mysterious forest paired with all the shit happening at their homestead and the fact that not only are they in the middle of nowhere but that they've also turned their backs on their old community sets a stage that you know that there is more happening than what you see, but it isn't obviously clear just what it is or how it will finally unfold also creates a really spooky atmosphere

Essential /x/ movies:
(fictional)
Stargate
Alien
Prometheus
X-Files
Back to the Future
Star Wars
Butterfly Effect
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
They Live
Ghostbusters (original, though the feminist remake has good stuff on ley lines, Akroyd is an paranormal buff)
Poltergeist
The Sixth Sense
Men In Black
Planet 51 (silly kid's movie, but it had a pretty reasonable theme of a world that can't accept space travel)
My Stepmother is an Alien (another movie more than likely influenced by Akroyd's interests)

(documentary)
Dreamland: Area 51
Dan Akroyd Unplugged on Aliens
a fuckton of shit on Youtube, all of which I can't list

Essential /x/ TV shows:
(fictional)
Twilight Zone
Quantum Leap
Stargate SG-1 (seems like goofy techno-mythology at first, but gets better. The Ori are beast in season 9. I really like the episodes the did demonstrating how military coverups work)
Star Trek (any incarnation, but of course TNG and TOS are the best)
Battlestar Galactica (newer one gets critical acclaim, but don't dismiss the original with Lorne Greene and Dirk Benedict)
X-Files (haven't watched but one episode, but I will trust its reputation)
Eureka
Harry and the Hendersons (sitcom, but about bigfoots; it seemed pretty good from what I remember)
V

(documentary style)
Ancient Aliens
Unsolved Mysteries
Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction
Ripley's Believe It or Not
UFO Files
Syfy's special on Atlantis they did in promotion of SGA (can't find it on Youtube or anywhere. should have recorded it. it intro'd me to Michael Tsarion)
>>
Starman is also pretty good. Most will overlook it with all the space movies in the 80s.

He did two movies, about 90 minutes or so each if I recall: "Where the Dead Go to Die," which despite the dumb as fuck title is actually pretty interesting in a spectacle sort of way. "When Blackbirds Fly" is a little more coherent, actually has an overarching plot. I wouldn't say anybody watches these for the plot though, but give them a try if you want to see something disturbing, or listen to some speedcore, or just hear Passenger of Shit make pig noises.

I almost puked after one of those hillbillies from "the hills have eyes" drank from that young mother's tits. Somehow it felt so wrong and intrusive and it was so unexpected; it still strikes me as one of the most upsetting horror scenes to date.

Not that anyone cares, but I own some 400+ dvds of horror movies and tv series...

Fourth Kind

Honeymoon
Extraterrestrial

Would really like to reccomend The Wicker Man (1973)

>Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) arrives on the small Scottish island of Summerisle to investigate the report of a missing child. A conservative Christian, the policeman observes the residents' frivolous sexual displays and strange pagan rituals, particularly the temptations of Willow (Britt Ekland), daughter of the island magistrate, Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee). The more Sergeant Howie learns about the islanders' strange practices, the closer he gets to tracking down the missing child.

Pros

>Spoopy as fuck
>No jump scares
>Atmosphere builds to great finale
>Chance to see Sauron go mad in his 30s

Cons

>Quite old (great if you don't mind old films)
>You might accidently watch the horrible Nicolas Cage remake.

It demands a level of understanding and appreciation for the culture and superstition of the period. It's as much a period piece as it is a horror film. Many people don't appreciate it's full measure out of simple ignorance, and I don't mean that in a derogatory way but in the technical sense of the word; they don't have enough information to fully weight the stakes and themes of the film.

-which, it's not flawless by any measure. I'm a huge history nerd, and I'd give it a 4/5 at best; points for novelty and accuracy.

>>17976931
Nah. I've watched it twice trying to understand the hype and both times it came off poorly constructed as a story and only passably creepy as a horror film. Most of it is like something off a paranormal investigators show with lots of ghost photos and videos. That would be alright, except it never escalates beyond that, in which case I'm just watching a fictional depiction of a mundane haunting. The big plot reveal was a revamped version of that old campfire story/creepypasta about the guy who sees a mutilated future version of himself on a visionquest, which I might have liked if it didn't feel broadly unrelated to the rest of the movie. In fact, the film had a lot of alright and interesting ideas (the interlinked hypnosis sessions, the weird sex abuse subplot) but it just kind of threw them all together without any coherent thematic quality besides 'people got secrets huh' and 'death's pretty sad and bad'. I wouldn't go as far as >>17973146, but it's definitely less than the sum of its parts. Noroi the Curse remains my favourite mockumentary horror.

*Hollow not Hallow

Speaking of Christina Ricci she had that same vibe that Winona Ryder had, who I thought was a babe in Beetlejuice even when I was just a sprout.

And let's not forget the ten degrees rule, Ricci + Depp = Winona + Depp in Edward Scissorhands. Not scary movies, all of these, but /x/ movies all the way. Edward Scissorhands was a play on the Homunculus and Frankenstein's Monster archetype.

Not all British Horror is Folk Horror, but (almost) all Folk Horror is British Horror.

Watch Pan's Labyrinthe. It's made up of Spanish and Mexican folklore layered on top of itself and used to create horror and suspense.

The Witch is a period drama with horror elements that come with the theme, I didnt found it super scary but I appreciate it for its ambience. And I've always wanted to see a classical old timey witch portrayal as people of that time would have perceived them.

Pan's Labyrinth is more of dark fantasy, but yeah it's good.
Del Toro's Mama was creepy all the way right before the ending.

Now, a movie that surprised me at the time was The Ring, it got me really inmersed. When this scene happened I went ooooh shit.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (70's remake) is probably the scariest movie I've seen yet. Its too bad people spoil the entire movie by posting that one scene.

Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.
