Opiates by themselves cause respiratory depression quite easily, even in medicinal dosages if the person doesn't have much of a tolerance. Benzodiazepines are essentially a sedative with no direct affect on the respiratory system. The only synergistic effect of the two types of drugs is increased CNS depression.
