There are plenty of reasons why an area isn't being worked, it could be in rotation or there's simply no need to work it. Prepearing soil for cultivation is a lot of work that takes a long time, a lot of machinery, fertilisers and manpower. Also there are plenty of plants where you need isolation distance from other fields because of pests and such. So yeah it's not really like a video game where you clear out an area then put 5x5 fields of corn on them and have them there constantly.

Can confirm, i belong to the Argie scientific expedition there, im currently in my free months back in the continent.
We are the ones getting shit to them, we always go with over double the official load, and they also are quite self suficient.
I don´t know shit of german but some of them know a bit of spanish (prob thanks to our expeditions during so many decades) and a guy in our group is of german descent and quite fluent because he was raised in one of those german villages in the patagonia that are said to be full of nazis that fled (also true, though almost all of them are dead and if someone is alive it was probably a kid at the time of WWII).

Never got to see too much of their base but it didn´t look necesarily all that amazing and even if they are self suficient, considering the stuff we take there they cant be more than a thousand. If they are more then they would be a lot more selfsuficient than i know. Never saw them with guns but we are friendly and always announce when we are going plus they already know more or less when a relief of personnel in our base is about to happen since it´s always on the same dates ever year, so if they are armed they aren´t showing. Swastika still everywhere which is always kinda funny considering before my first time going there i had only saw them in movies, books and documentals. Yet to see a salute.
