Thoughts on The Witch, /x/?

While I didn't find it to be very scary, I still really enjoyed it as a film.
Atmosphere was genuinely eerie and I felt very immersed in the world.
I give it an 8/10, which is a high rating in comparison to all the shit horror films being made these days.

I was disappointed. I was really looking forward to seeing this, paid to see it in theatre, and... it pretty much sucked. It wasn't the worst horror movie I've seen, but it didn't do anything new or interesting. It had all kinds of opportunity to go somewhere interesting, and it blew every chance. Then the ending made no fucking sense at all. Fuck that/5.

Agreed 100%. That said, I totally bought into the marketing campaign about it being the most terrifying movie ever and went to see a midnight showing despite having to work at 7 am the next day.

Big regret there. My subjective experience wound up being more like 6/10 due to that.

I liked the creepy atmosphere and the old timey feel with the way the people spoke. I did not like that there wasn't much reveal of witches. You see the one grinding the baby, the hag in the barn, and the naked women at the end but I was hoping to see more of their side too.

About it being scary or not... I dont watch movies to be scared, but to experience an history, meet interesting characters (the evil ones included) and well, enjoy the art you know. I appreciate a good jumpscare in the good timing, but I hate it when it is gratuitous. Of course if I get scared it would be a good thing, but after watching so many horror movies is hard for me.

The collecting the goat crap to use as breakfast cereal scene was weird.

Movie was great. Not scary, but the tone was eerie and the production quality was unreal. Ending made perfect sense because I thankfully had at least a rudimentary grasp on the film's themes.

So the film company had so little advertising money they have to pay people to talk about the film on /x/ in hopes of at least making some money off DVD sales?

This. I luckly didn't catch the marketing of "this is the new spookiest thing you'll ever see!" and got in with no expectations.

Got a solid period drama about a family destroying itself, there's this heavyness in the air that never leaves and the entire movie is just a depressing buildup until the very last scene, it really drains you as an experience.

8/10 easily.

The witchcraft bullshit looked so dumb, it would be best if they had not shown that last scene, just have the girl walk into the forest, that would be enough.

Very slow which I enjoyed because most horror movies rush in with spooks. The goat was the best part, it was pretty damn accurate to some grim tales I remember reading, never trust the barn animals. The little brother checking out the sister made me think twice about the girl being the witch.

The point is of that bit is, the whole fucking World is SO stupid, they don't even know how to water a plant, thereby insuring the End of humans.
