I don't really understand this symbol, perhaps someone here could help me out?
It's obviously a depiction of Moses' bronze serpent but why would a serpent save the lives of his followers? I would understand the symbolism if it meant turning to Christ on the cross but that hadn't happened yet (and wouldn't the snake be a pretty unfitting animal to represent the saviour?).

a more traditional view is that it means salvation is for everyone, even the serpent (devil) will be redeemed.
poison to force out poison is a sometimes effective treatment. I guess, God is the BIG snake which has power over all snakes, just as Jesus had a BIG death which has power over all death etc.
