This is loosely true. /x/ tried to "compile info" after that one original post got huge because it was believable, terrifying, and well written. By believable I don't mean real. It wasn't real. It was just a very well told story. Suddenly, over a few months, everyone just "remembered" their terrifying and similar (exact same) experiences and came together to name and define "skinwalkers" which led to a clusterfuck of identical and horrible stories trying to roleplay.
So /x/ never decided to invent them outright, they effectively just decided to expand and plagiarize until a good story was crushed into a pile of awful shit.
