Man Creates 200W 'Laser Bazooka'

Shining a low-power 0.5mW laser in to your eyes, even for a brief moment, can cause irreparable damage - so imagine what would happen if you looked in to one that is 40,000 times more powerful.

The brainchild of YouTube user StyroPyro, this 200W 'laser bazooka' is actually more akin to a shotgun; it was created by focusing a cluster of high-power laser beams, all through a single lens. The undeniably awesome invention is thought to be the most powerful hobbyist-level laser device ever created and is able to burn through everything from a cardboard box to a metal PC case. Given its potential to burn someone's eyes out however (According to its maker, having this beam in your unprotected eyes is 33 million times worse than staring at the sun), this is one creation that you definitely won't be seeing for sale anytime soon.

Hole in the Ozone is Starting to Heal

Situated high up in the planet's stratosphere, the ozone layer is a special region which helps to protect the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation coming from the sun. Scientists first noticed that it appeared to be thinning above Antarctica back in the 1980s, a worrying trend that was shown to be due to the presence of certain chemicals in hair sprays, refrigerators, air conditioning systems and other CFC-containing products. The discovery that these gases were responsible for depleting the ozone layer led to a significant reduction in the manufacture and use of these items in the hope that this would slow down or even reverse the damage that they had been causing, and now researchers say they have found the first clear evidence that the thinning in the ozone layer above Antarctica is starting to heal.

Professor Susan Solomon and colleagues, including researchers from the University of Leeds in the UK, carried out detailed measurements of the amount of ozone in the stratosphere between 2000 and 2015, and determined that the hole was around 4 million square km smaller than it was in the year 2000 - an area roughly the size of India. They found that more than half the shrinkage was due solely to the reduction in atmospheric chlorine.

"Even though we phased out the production of CFCs in all countries, including India and China, around the year 2000, there's still a lot of chlorine left in the atmosphere," Professor Solomon said. "We don't expect to see a complete recovery until about 2050 or 2060, but we are starting to see that the ozone hole is not as bad as it used to be."

First Science-Backed Anti-Aging Drug to Be Tested in Humans Next Month

In 2013, researchers from the University of New South Wales claimed to have formulated a drug that could help slow down the aging process using a compound called nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). And indeed, the compound has been found to reverse signs of aging and extend the life expectancy in animal tests. To date, such methods haven’t been tested in humans; now, it will be tested on humans to see if the results will be as good and as safe. The trial will be conducted next month by Keio University in japan with ten healthy volunteers.

NMN has been found to stimulate the production of sirtuins, a class of proteins that grow weaker as we age. This drug reverses, not just external signs of aging, but internal symptoms as well, including decline in eyesight, metabolism, and glucose intolerance.

"We've confirmed a remarkable effect in the experiment using mice, but it's not clear yet how much [the compound] will affect humans," Lead researcher Shin-ichiro Imai said. "We'll carefully conduct the study, which I hope will result in important findings originating in Japan."

Thursday: Earth Sounds and Alien Structures

Earthfiles investigative reporter Linda Moulton Howe discussed the continuing rumbling sounds in Windsor, Ontario; a retired Naval flight engineer's experiences in Antarctica that included the retrieval of 15 scientists after a 2-week-disappearance in 1994; a whistleblower who described seeing a photo of non-human construction inside a moon crater; and another whistleblower going on the record about the alterations of two different images.


Friday: History of Star Trek

Edward Gross has an extensive history of covering film and television as a member of the editorial staff of a wide variety of magazines. He discussed the true story behind the making of a pop culture phenomenon - Star Trek. Open Lines followed.

Expanded Perspectives: The Oak Island Money Pit

On this episode of Expanded Perspectives the guys discuss one of world’s strangest mysteries, The Oak Island Money Pit.

In 1795, a teenager named Daniel McGinnis found an oval-shaped recession in the ground on the island. With little evidence that there was anything to be discovered, McGinnis started digging in the area and subsequently hit wooden planks every ten feet. The discovery of the planks led McGinnis and his friends to believe the pit was man-made and they began what would become a long-standing tradition of treasure seeking in the area.

From the beginning of the 19th century onward, many companies formed to begin their own digging expeditions in the pit, each discovering more “evidence” and attributing new theories to the region. Errol Flynn, John Wayne, and Franklin Roosevelt were at one point each involved in the hunt and held their own theories as to the pit’s contents.

Some believed pirate treasure lay just below the next layer of soil. Others believed Marie Antoinette’s lost jewels were surely buried there right after the French Revolution. Another theory even posited that Francis Bacon had stored documents in the pit proving himself as the author of Shakespeare’s plays. There are many other theories one big one is that “The Arc Of the Covenant” lies at the bottom.

Despite the wild theories, little has ever come out of the pit. Everything ever found in the pit has been attributed to some treasure theory. A cavern found during the dig was deemed a booby trap. Another tunnel leading out of the pit to Smith’s cove was deemed a secret floodway. Any wood found in tunnel was immediately considered a part of the pit’s foundation. However, just enough evidence has been found to keep people digging.

That's really interesting and depending on if it works/how much, it could have a huge impact.

Also, this isn't really paranormal, but the Juno probe enters Jupiter's orbit tonight and will start sending feedback on the July 6th.(they're shutting it's instruments down to be extra careful). Jupiter has some crazy features and mysteries so it should be worth it to follow, even if there doesn't end up being anything paranormal about it.
