I am astounded at the level of programming in people these days. They can tell you what they believe, but never why, or how they came to their belief. It really bends my mind that jones used all the same tecniques being used today on our college campuses.

There was no secret or mind control going on here, OP. This man preached things that only desperate people who don't know what to believe in wanted to hear. Jones wasn't a preacher but a cult leader who had very cynical ideals. He preached against capitalists and promoted communism and much much more. However when the investigations started to roll in and finding out that his time as a leader was coming to an end he ended up taking everyone down with him. He spread fear propaganda about capitalists which made the people in the town paranoid. It was already proven that this man was slowly becoming unstable so no surprise here.
