I think it's because we're all so familiar with VHS tapes.
We've all operated a camcorder or at least a VCR.
People recorded memories on them that'll last for their entire lifetimes.
So when you see someone have some scary shit on a VHS tape, you associate it with your own experiences and reality.
Same reason why old, dusty, cobwebby rooms make it scarier, I guess. There's something quaint about it, outdated and out of place.
Plus, there's probably the influence of The Ring.

I'm sure this is at play as well. There's something there about the desecration of that familiarity. The notion that hidden somewhere in our tapes upon tapes of childhood memories, there might be something dark and sinister.

In 50 years, someone your current age will think DVD'S are inherently creepy. And it will have to do with the quality.
