We've had "creepy music" threads in the past, but I'm looking for something different. What would a thousand year old flesh eating ghost vampire skinwalker alien (or other monster of human intelligence) listen to while cruising for human flesh at night?

Classical wasn't around a thousand years ago, more like 2-300 years... but I understand what you're saying. Still I think... it depends on what you believe about memory. I suspect that with time they'd forget their roots...

Here's a vote for Bela Lugosi's Dead, which was supposed to be parody but was too perfect to not be taken at face value.

I don't know, if I'd been alive for 1000 years, I would have had plenty of time to master every instrument and would be jamming out to my own music. Something very progressive, bizarre and complex. OP here, finally back... had to leave suddenly last night. Some great contributions!

>>17849426
LOL you're awesome :)

>>17849482
Even out of context this fits. Something feels right about this. Good pick.

>>17849524
This will be hard for people to absorb because of the synthybeat but after the first 20 seconds I definitely started understanding what you're saying with this. Interesting stuff.

>>17849571
This keeps coming up as a suggestion for me on YouTube, but I haven't had time to go through the whole album. I know Perturbator has released a few of my past favorite "new retro" style songs but none of them come to mind... still this is interesting, makes me think that the simplicity and glamour of new retro would really appeal to a monster. They'd probably love the Hotline Miami soundtrack!

>>17849587
I kinda get it from the context of the title, but I've always thought Sinatra was for people who were relaxed and content... not a place I imagine monsters living...

>>17849609
The song you're thinking of is titled "Fortunate Son" and taken as a whole it's a very, very human song begging for peace and decrying the injustice of war.
https://youtu.be/CvwQmxLaknc

>>17849670
"Bad Moon Rising" is an inspired pick actually, and I love "The Ink Spots" in this context (makes me forget Fallout LOL).

That Caretaker album is, of course, one of the best things ever created... used to listen to that on my breaks at work to help me grab a nap and dream of nightmares worse than my actual job (I really, really hated that job...) He came out with another album too... it was a bit uneven but parts of it were quite good.

More cowbell. :) Fits.

I did NOT see "The Vogues" coming at all but... damn. It's perfect! I could 100% see this playing in a movie during a stalking scene. Anon this was really great, nice playlist!

>>17849677
Oh wow it's been years since I heard this one... yeah good fit, nice one, actually adding that to my "Murderer" playlist. :)
>>
>>17849887
I have to admit, I struggle with hip hop. The vocals are just so unappealing. They require me to put them in context... take the "gangta" history away from those vocals and it's someone whose voice has no business in music wasting your time... and it always reeks of effort.

Not actually a criticism just an expression of my personal inability to get into it.

>>17849921
The world needs more metal. Actually this was really well rendered. It was patient, slow, almost relaxing throughout... but still heavy. Nice pick I could see this.

>>17849958
Okay last thing I was expecting was a salsa beat... and then the bizarre pitch-bent drone... symphonic, subtle kettle drums, a little buzzing harpsichord in the back... damn. This is awesome! I'm excited about this, where has this been hiding?? They should have used this on the Lords of Salem soundtrack... thanks anon!

>>17849989
Oh and you posted more by them and it is also epic despite being very very different. Wow... The Third Eye Foundation is absolutely blowing my mind right now... I haven't felt this way about a band since I first happened upon Bohren & der Club of Gore

>>17850016
CHVRCHES... interesting. Very very clean... maybe too clean but... hey you know what, you might really like Bat For Lashes. Here check this out, let me know what you think (this also fits with the thread's theme actually):
https://youtu.be/QRckY9N2sDA

>>17850033
I'm sure this is 100% perfect and I know as a music affictionado I'm obligated to adore Skinny Puppy but I just couldn't ever get into them... and I know, I know, that makes me a bad person. :)

>>17850108
I often mentally write off Tool as overly melodramatic, but this track is a really really good fit. Nice one.

>>17850311
You have my attention. This isn't anything like anything else in this thread and yet is 100% a perfect fit for the premise. Beautiful too, real ear candy. I'm going to spend some time with this album, definitely. Thanks for this anon!

Giles Corey - damn. Nice stuff. I've heard a lot of this kind of "genre" and most of it is crap. Nice to hear someone who really poured themselves into what they were creating.

Sunn - well it fits the theme and captures the mood you were looking for, although I feel like it's a bit heavy-handed. Still better than most John Carpenter soundtracks though :)

John Carpenter is a Canadian director of fun, shlocky horror movies. Some of them turned out pretty good, like The Thing and Halloween and Escape from New York/LA, In the Mouth of Madness, that kind of thing.

He tended to make his own music for the movie soundtracks, which was occasionally great (like in Halloween) but more often than not just a bit forgettable.

This is a lot lighter than I was really thinking for the thread, but you win on a technicality: Rush is ALWAYS THE CORRECT CHOICE!

>>17853394
Idk, I think music's evolved in some interesting and important ways, and I think EDM has been entering a real golden age where they take the best of pop and mix it with the best of rave music... the hybrid works. For it to happen though we needed to hit the pause button on DnB but... maybe there's enough room now for DnB to come back?

IDK, I can imagine a monster listening to gangta rap and thinking "how trite". There's a weird notion in rap that the rapper actually means what they say... but obviously they don't... so they're kinda fake right out of the gates right?

I think something like Dethklok might make more sense, because it angers up the blood but there's no sense that the performers themselves are claiming monstrosity for themselves. Rather, they're summoning it:

Nice. I'm gonna have to explore Kreator a bit. They're a bit unpolished but have potential as a metal band.

>>17856462
LOVE The Canceled Earth - Cities Last Broadcast. Been a couple years since I heard that one. Nice pick!
HENTAI vs. NORDVARGR - Mechanical Pain - not what I expected LOL... it's good haunted house music isn't it? Like if you heard it playing indistinctly in the background as you made your way through...

>>17858121
Cheers man! :)

>>17858265
You have the Clockwork Orange sensibility going on with these songs. None of them are especially "scary" but there's frequently that sense that they're falling off the rails. (Especially that Animal Collective song!) Pendulum I've always found a bit too fun-lovin' tho... probably because they're anchored in my mind to their track "The Island" and that Tomorrowland promo a few years back...

You'd probably really enjoy Scroobius Pip's little ditty about a serial killer nobody would suspect:

>>17858276
Yeah Rob Zombie is the shit. This guy tapped a RZ track too >>17854044

>>17858365
This guy knows what is going on.

So Neocoretex is new for me and I took the time to check it out... at first it's "whatever" but I let it in, let my brain sync with it, turned up the volume on my headphones... synesthasia started... pulsing lights... oh my gooodddd i am tripp... dude I had to shut that off. Like at 5 minutes I was freaking out a bit. Thing got me shaking and my eyes bulging out of my face... wow. That's some intense stuff.
>>
>>17858430
These guys are fun! Thanks man, can never get enough death metal - great drums and guitar too, really well rendered.

>>17858432
Dude attach a warning next time that hurt my ears... it's interesting noise. Yeah I could totally see this working for a monster. Not something I'm gonna play on my next road trip personally but hey...

>>17858446
Are we punk? Are we metal? Are we a garage band? I hope these guys stay together and keep producing music; I'd be interested in hearing what they come up with a decade from now.

>>17858455
Well it's enough to make me wanna hear what other things Cancerslug's done...

>>17858463
I never know what to think of these era-mixing tracks. It's like when that dance club remix of Mozart's Requiem Mass came out... I kept thinking: who is this for?

>>17860090
Very geometric sound. Honestly I'm not sure what to make of it. Apparently it's got it's fans though.

>>17860425
Sephiroth comes across as a bit "action movie soundtrack" for my taste, kinda have that "scary but safe" vibe... but I like the Archon Satani tracks you've got there. Interesting artist, they're new for me... hmm, saved to playlists... any idea what the video from "Incubus" is from?

>>17860439
Thanks for the warning! You know, I just can't get into this noise style music. It's a bit too... it just sets my teeth on edge. I keep wanting to give it a chance but I think it's beyond me for now.

Okay so the thing starts playing and I'm thinking: "Oh goody, high-pitched noises and banging... this is gonna be work..." and then the screaming...

Like... if this was played on your front porch on Halloween it would fit. I'd get it there. But any other context and I'm wondering where it's going...

You know, I think the problem is I'm spoiled. I expect these same themes of industrial setting and menace to sound "good", kinda... for instance, check out Lustmord's Zoetrope:
https://youtu.be/7rspvp3h6Ug

(If you like it the full 18 minute version is on YouTube somewhere...)

Again, this is likely a personal bias against shrill and high-pitched sounds... you're likely onto something... just not for me.
>>
>>17860830
It fits. It's really well done. It's practically perfect. Just wish it wasn't rap. I mean I was trying to get over it, get past my genre bias, and then he spits: "Mothafuckers can't win because I'm tryin' ta fail." .... fuck. Nope. Can't do it.

Frustrating because at 3:45 it breaks into something AMAZING... but then it breaks down into all this gansta shit... then it comes back, then it fucks up...

But anyone who likes rap or hip hop should check this out, solid implementation.

>>17861910

Do you have more like that album? It's good!
>>
>>17864458
Yeah, so the album we're talking about is "Sunset Mission" by a band called Bohren & der Club of Gore. They produced several great albums, each one varying in tone. This means you'll never hear anything quite like "Sunset Mission" again, but there are other albums like "Black Earth" (which is quite good!) or "Dolores" that are similar, and for a much deeper and moodier album you can check out this one entitled "Midnight Radio":
https://youtu.be/pkw2kcQ5Lzs

Again, one of a kind!

There are very, very few bands like them, but perhaps along the same lines is The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble. Their self-titled album was posted by another anon here >>17851358
which is very very good, although my personal favorite by them is called "Here Be Dragons". Check it out:
https://youtu.be/AyORieDhpkg

Again they have a bunch of great albums. Interesting thing about them: they're even better live than they are in the studio. One of their live songs was posted here >>17852916

Finding MORE like these is VERY VERY TOUGH, believe me! I've really looked! One could make an argument for this album by Dale Cooper Quartet and the Dictaphones though:
https://youtu.be/awUsLrEb1EU

... and possibly The Caretaker's An Empty Bliss Beyond This World:
https://youtu.be/LL998ajnjN4

But already we're clearly digressing. "Dark jazz" as a genre, despite being just glorious and amazing, is unfortunately really rare.

The most recent album was "Piano Nights" which was only in 2014, so if the pattern holds they're due to release again in a year or two... but I gotta admit, I didn't like Piano Nights so much.

Ignore this. CCR was around before anyone knew what the word "meme" was. Their greatest hits album is playable from beginning to end.

That one song about failing to kill himself and trying to finish the job before his mom gets home, all while his head is peeled like a banana, makes me feel nauseous and sad everytime I hear it.

Apparently "Sunset Mission" is out of print and isn't even for sale through the band website... on Amazon you can buy used copies for $250. Damn.

But while I was hunting around, I came across a band I'd never heard of before: LAUBE. VERY similar! Check it out:

Apparently they came out with a self-titled album a couple of years ago. Definitely piqued my interest.

For the non-evil monster that can't deal with how odd and out of place they are... there's always the warm and comfy Burial:

Serious ear candy.
