Okay. I took a break from drawing for a few days to get away from paranormal stuff, but I ended up watching a bunch of horror and stuff. Guess you can't ever really escape once your in.
I'm gonna post some pages I've done for the introduction of part two soon. Without thinking I ended up falling into some of my old artistic habits, so the art is a little bit sloppier than I'd prefer. I'm making an artistic transition at the moment and it's a little rough but hopefully I'll be in the swing of things soon and I'll start experimenting with this new style soon after.

One thing I really like about this place is the long pastas and people's 'real' encounters with the supernatural. I really like when it's a l;lengthy story that gets really exciting and has the whole thread jumping in anticipation.

I can't entirely remember at the moment but I'll get back to it.

Well I really appreciate the community that /x/ has. I've seen some changes over the years and /x/ has really grown on me. Also science fiction and horror has always been an interest in my life. Movies and books have always been great passions of mine and adding in themes that I already love has always helped hold my interest in the subject. Because of that I've always wanted to give back to the thing that gave me so much inspiration.

Thanks. Well that's still in the rough stages at the moment and it's in the old style I was referring to. The biggest changes in the new style will be leaning towards me trying to be neater about my drawings. I'm also trying to have my drawings more realistic and expressive when it comes to anatomy and whatnot. I'm also gonna be adding stuff in like shading and stuff soon. Well that's all that I've got roughed up for the intro. As promised once I get more done I'll finally get around to making that blogspot. I don't have a phone at the moment so I won't be able to monitor the thread vigilantly like I used to. Also updates and stuff will come a bit slower. Hopefully the different people contributing to the thread will help keep it bumped, but I'll definitely try to bump and post when I can.

Interesting that you posted that. I was thinking back to my old usernames back in the day. Blackmage, Pixelmage, PixelGaurdian and a few other are ones lost to time. I used some as trips that I'd use in /co/ and /v/ drawthreads. I think brokassdrawfag is the one I used most regularly. Now I'm feeling nostalgic, despite my disappointment in my past artistic abilities.

>Warm Up for the new style i'm attempting. Mainly using different techniques for different things. I also wanted to either make the art look more solid and jagged or smooth and soft when it comes to lines. Yeah, not getting on your case or anything, sometimes you just have to draw with what you got, but having a steady supply of good art paper is essential. Otherwise some little sketch might end up turning out really good, and then you waste time trying to clean it up after scanning, or it just looks ugly because lined paper.

I'm surprised I didn't notice this thread sooner. I kinda like there being a creative show'n'tell thread for the /x/ folks.

I'm very fond of Pagan-related material, like runes, mythologies, and alike. Body horror is another favorite too; love me limbs growing outta place they shouldn't.

My general interest in most things creepy, strange, paranormal, supernatural, horrific, etc... led me to this place. That, and I'm another bored idiot who lurks 4chan on a daily basis.

Firstly, the drawthreads. I find them a fantastic outlet to keep myself consistently drawing and satisfying my urge to share my art with random strangers.

I also enjoy reading the niche interest threads, especially towards uncommon /x/-worthy topics ( e.g. the Russian wilderness thread from weeks ago.)

Anywho, I'm one of the recent artists that became active here. I drew a few requests for some of the nice anons here, too.

In any case, I guess this thread will be another great place to share my concepts and drawings. I recently got into making comics this year, and made a 13-paged comic involving some mindfuckery and Pagan shit. I'm also close to finishing a 20-paged comic featuring an overarching story line involving some /x/-worthy fiction.

I'll probably draw up something for this thread tomorrow. In the meantime, here's the cover page from the first comic I mentioned as a contribution. (I could upload the comic in its entirety too if anyone's interested. Sadly, the quality of the comic is all over the place due to my lack of skill keeping a consistency with my style.)

Whoooooooooa. I just got up from a nap so my brain is still starting up, but I went through some of the pages and I really like the detail and atmosphere you've got going. Like that other anon said a little bit of introduction wouldn't hurt. Then again if you didn't add an intro and gave a little more information as the pages progressed it would keep it mysterious. I personally picked up what was going on for the most part almost immediately, but don't know the lore so I liked the feeling of disorientation and mystery that was going on. I'm gonna re-red it in a bit because I like what you have and so I can get a solid understanding now that my brain is starting up.

I think you can kinda squeeze by with that here as long as it's not explicit and you don't draw attention to it. Should be fine, but if you want to be 100% safe, just keep that in mind next time. Yeah, the one thing I forgot to mention this was a meant to be a 12-paged art project for a comic-making class, so I had to play it economically. I'm hoping my current comic will rectify the issues in this comic since it's part of a larger story and not consolidated into a one-off.

I'm happy you enjoyed the mystery behind it too. I must admit, I like being enigmatic with my concepts, but it also can hurt the understanding of them to my audience. Always something to keep in mind!

Yeah, I like your art, but with your style, at times it seemed a little TOO "busy" or whatever the right word is. I had to stare at the pages a bit to figure out what you had drawn, let alone the writing. White space can be your friend too, as this image >>17856370 shows.

The problem with spoilers on /x/ is that everyone would just post jumpscares or gore or other meaningless junk under them. It would get abused pretty fast around here. But I wouldn't worry too much about your little comic page, just something to keep in mind for the future.

Thank you, anon. You are absolutely right, too. As much as I love my cross-hatching and alike, my style is notorious for getting too visually "busy." (It's the best way to characterize that flaw.)

I recently did a capstone test for my art degree and was criticized that trait was both a pro and con. My judges cared more about the busy imagery than the text, and felt the two were combating for attention. It's made me think I need to work on my black & white balance better, and give white more room to shine.

I'm hoping with my current comic I solved this issue by excluding hatching on the characters' faces and only leaving it for certain textures or moody moments. There's, unfortunately, still moments of "busy" line art. I might need to work some Photoshop magic to clean them up, lol.

Hilariously enough, your phenotype reminds me of the Holy Beasts I made for my recent comic. (I'll post my reference sheet for the fun of it. Sorry for the ass quality though. I never intended to show it off, but whatever.)

I like the exaggerated length of the limbs and the overall sinister nature of its grinning face. I'd love to see a fully detailed version in a more dynamic pose, too. Y'know, whenever you have the time for it. No rush, obviously.

If you're currently in a class, asking advice from teachers or other students might help, they could steer you in the right direction. It's clear you put effort and thought into it, but it's a bit like working your way through a maze, visually. Some people might tend to have a harder time than others. My problem might be that with normal art, I look it over quick once or twice, then if I like it, I try to pick out the finer details, but here, my eyes are overwhelmed by everything right away and it takes a while to get what things are, especially since it's all black and white. If it were in color, that might be a different story.

Haha, I'm actually on summer vacation atm. I've received constructively criticism by both my peers and professors alike though. Ironically, my comic-making professor had no issues with my busy lines, but I had other professors who said to tone it down or to separate that kinda line work from my sequential art altogether.

Honestly, I don't mind the opinions from both sides, but I really do keep the negative ones closer than the positive ones.

I'm waiting for some scholarship money to come in so I can buy a shit-ton of Copic sketch markers, so colored images aren't implausible. Colored pencil is alright with these images, but I like a fine, flat layer of color so I can build on it, or rather let the line art do the work while the color helps separate that "busy" quality.

I can't wait for the new one, not to mention the game. I'm getting it early for reviewing purposes, which is even better.

I've actually caught a cold at the moment, so I might not be as active as usual (or I might be even more active, depending on how fucked my sleep schedule gets), but I'll do my best to keep bumping. I might even contribute with some of the storyboard stuff I've been working on for that animated short film, though everyone should be well aware that it won't be 'high art' by any means.

Now, onto the questions:

My favourite /x/ related thing is night shift stories and drawthreads like this one. I love it when people share their own experiences from a 'common man' perspective, and it's a lot more believable too. The drawthreads are great because a lot of the imagery that's common on /x/, such as the lovecraftian stuff and /x/-tan aren't widely available elsewhere, and it's also a great opportunity to meet fellow artists with similar interests.

I first came to /x/ in 2009, after hearing about it in youtube comments on some spooky video compilation. I visited so much that it ended up feeling like home, which is why I'm still around, despite a few prolonged absences. As long as a few people make quality threads every now and then, I plan to keep coming back.

I'll be entering my Fall semester as a senior and likely will have to take my next capstone by making a body of work for our university's Senior Thesis Exhibition AND engage professionals from the art world, so I HAVE to be used to criticism by now, lol! I think that can be said for a lot of decent art styles, but I wouldn't call you wrong for calling out the issues from your initial impression. Honestly glad to be back. Both movies have been marathoned like at least twice on SyFy so I figured I'd catch them while I can. I was a little busy during some so I might have to go re-watch some of them.
I love all of them but I really like the first two. I do appreciate that for a while they tried their hardest to kick the deaths up a notch with each film. Really excited for the game and I just learned about the new one coming out.
Really enjoying all of these horror movies taking a step away from ghost for a bit. I plan on watching Chronos pretty soon. I've got so many on the backburner.

I might as well post the first 'page' of comics from the revamped ECB. It's vaguely /x/ related, and more of my own form of stress therapy, but it's also good practice for storyboard work. My comic-making professor once brought up the issue of weening off one's weeaboo/manga/anime style. He suggested to us to try gesture drawing and simply drawing from life. He reasoned it helps moderate how often you draw in a certain style by experimenting with form and shape rather than visual details, like hairs and eyes, etc. I also believe he mentioned taking those design aspects from outside sources (be them Western or Eastern oriented) and manipulating them to your style rather than emulating the exact designs into it.

I'm actually a huge fan of Kouta Hirano's Hellsing when it came to the way he hatches and stylizes his clothing folds and poses. Not to mention those awesome-looking eyes on his characters. I guess it took several years for me to blend those traits into my own art style, but it's doable. I think it really depends on how early those influences are and how many other influence come along the way where they might help hide the weeaboo-ness.

I noticed how some of my peers compared my style to the more gritty comics of the 80s, especially with the uneven and somewhat unclean look to my style. I initially disliked that trait but grew to endear it. It might be due to my lack of experience in using ink brush. I only recently took up brush and inkwell with nib pen for finer details and lettering.

It's very true especially when I've had peers who showed a lack of enthusiasm in their work or didn't focus to a certain concept/trait in their body of work. I can't tell you how often some people jumped into social rights-related concepts, only to show for it with bare bone pieces and lackluster reasons for questionable design choices. Critiques would often chew these poor folks up, especially with the more harshly opinionated professors. (Hilariously, I can't thank them enough for ripping me a new one over mine.)

I would know, I've done some questionable and crappy projects myself. I once did a performance art piece. Haha. Never again.

I think you're on the right track. Your style shows an enthusiasm for rounded shapes and sharp angles, so you're definitely not limiting yourself from either. Apart from a few stiff poses, you've got a competent style.

You'll notice in my style there's an apparent lack of foreshortening or angled poses. I often draw my hands on a flat plane rather than through a pseudo-3D one due to my clumsy execution with it. Haha, I've only recently tried my hand at doing back views and not drawing my characters at a constant third-quarter view pose.

Backgrounds too. A severe lack of exercise into those. Kinda important for comic-based work, lol.

Regarding that anon that compared the one on the left to a pokemon, remember that there is a pokemon equivalent for nearly everything, so it doesn't mean much.

Anyway, regarding the short film, if anyone is interested, here's some unfinished art for it. Pixel is helping me out since I only recently began practicing my storyboarding skills for college, and have little to no notion of basic human proportions. On a positive note, however, I've been 'world-building' for this project since 2010, so I think the script will turn out fine.

The story follows an unnamed (for now) 'Eldritch Knight', traversing a post-apocalyptic 'fantasy' world in search of a small group of travellers. The details will remain vague in the actual short film, but this Knight is partially responsible for summoning the Elder God that destroyed most of the earth, and has been sent on a mission to assassinate an old friend that holds the key to banishing this God for good.

Most technology on earth has been rendered useless, and most of the population either died instantly when the God approached, shattering space and time surrounding the earth (this also results in some 'monsters' from both the past and future of earth). Some of the survivors suffered horrible side-effects, becoming mentally unstable, while others even began to physically 'de-evolve' into monstrous things, that act as the earthly forces of the consuming God (think the fish-people of Innsmouth, or even the LOTR Orcs).

The Knight travels around this devastated world by various means (he doesn't have a constant steed as he constantly wears them out, riding too hard), having a spiritual connection to this God, who he believes is cleansing the earth for his followers. The short will revolve around him stopping by a small settlement, where he believes he might find more information about the people he's hunting.

However, the place is built like a wooden fortress, with a makeshift 'castle' built around a wind turbine (since the story is presented as folklore told by the survivors of the apocalypse in the future, they'll refer to this as a metal tree). The surrounding area is filled with lowly workers and farmers, who serve 'the man in the castle', and in return are allowed a small amount of electricity, which is mostly used to scare away the forces of the Elder God.

The Knight isn't a fan of this arrangement, not because of how unfair the people are treated by the Man in the Castle, but because he believes those reliant on 'modern' ways are unfit to survive in this new world. In any case, he asks around for information, but the people are fed up with their extortion, and make it clear that the group the Knight is hunting did indeed stop by the settlement, but refuse to give more information, unless the Knight helps them out.

Reluctantly, he requests an audience with the Man in the Castle, but is turned down at the entrance to the wooden fortress, as the castle guards have been instructed to turn away 'dangerous-looking folk'. The Knight has come too far to give up, however, and murders almost every armed man and woman within the settlement, and eventually happens upon the 'king's chamber', covered in blood, with a trail of corpses showing his progress.

The King attempts to bargain for his life, saying that he will help with anything that the Knight needs, so long as he isn't harmed. He also explains that-

He also explains that he maintains his position by being the only one with knowledge on how to operate the 'metal tree', and so refuses to pass the information along to anyone else, ensuring his safety.

The Knight isn't having any of that bullshit, however, and presses him for information, promising that he'll do what's right for the people. So the King tells him where the travellers went, and even offers him a job as his personal 'royal guard'. By this point, people have gathered around the chamber's entrance, wanting to know what will become of their leader.

So the Knight explains to the people that they have been enslaved for far too long, not by the frail operator of the metal tree, but by their need of the 'old way of life'. Before anyone can react, he decapitates the King, and claims that when they have earned the knowledge of how to use the tree, they'll deserve its benefits.

Taking another horse for himself, the Knight then leaves, barely noticing the trail of death that was left in his wake. The people are too afraid to stop him, or to even ask for help, but as he distances himself from the settlement, he can see the once proud electrical lights flickering, as the Eldritch forces of darkness gather near the gates, biding their time.

That's about it, I'm still not done turning this into an actual script, as the plot is just work-in-progress for now, but I think it's almost good enough for my presentation. This is actually just a small yarn within a much larger story, where this Knight is the main antagonist, relentlessly hunting down the actual main characters, believing that he's the one saving what's left of the world.

In terms of It Follows I absolutely loved the visual style of the movie. A lot of the shots were so nice. I liked how the cast seemed to have that weird sort of friendship that isn't really portrayed in movies. Like it was honest and sorta like a quirky friendship instead of weird cheesy dedication you get in movies. I was okay with the horror aspect almost taking a backseat to the rest of the movie because the atmosphere was what really made the film for me. I loved the soundtrack and like how the movie had a suspenseful air to it throughout. Got some legitimate jumps out of me, but there were moments of actual terror for me during it which I really loved. Kinda wish the horror aspect got more or explanation, but overall I really liked it.

I was able to watch Last Shift and Final Girl last night. I really enjoyed Last Shift but Final Girl was quite unsatisfying. Overall, I found your summary to be rather interesting since it blends Lovecraftian and post apocalyptic elements but through some homages to Lovecraft's creatures (ie Innsmouth's Deep Ones) and Mad Max (ie the superstitious belief into past technology due to the masses' lack of knowledge into it.)

I actually really like the idea behind the 'Eldritch Knight' as well, particularly because he's more of an anti-hero in that he's willing to 'help' these people from their tyrannical ruler but in no means that benefit them. He's not a deliberate villain in that context since his actions in no way benefit the villain of your proposed short film. It's a nice step away from the atypical gritty hero with a heart of gold I'm accustomed to in post-apocalyptic scenarios.

Strangely, I got powerful reverberations to dark fantasy stories like Kentaro Miura's Berserk. I mainly thought this due to the enforced nature of your protagonist's reason to help the villagers. It's been a long time since I read Berserk, but I recall Guts having to deal with similar situations when he was hunting for Griffith and the God Hand. Again, I might be butchering that memory due to not reading the manga for 5+ years, but I like that I get similar feelings from sucha great story inside of yours. Kudos in that respect!

Criticism-wise, I don't think I have too much to say negatively about your idea. I mean, there's the obvious issue of your plot potentially being too 'big' depending the length of your film. Mind you, short films can range up to 15 minutes or more depending on your deadlines, circumstance surrounding its production, and your progressive reworking with narrative elements. I feel like your plot as a 5-8 minute short film might require some trimming down depending how you work it into a script, but 10 minutes or more might grant you a lot of rein for more 'fat'. However, in the context of the story, your most dialog-heavy characters are the 'Eldritch Knight' and the village ruler, and the village ruler wouldn't even speak until near the last act of the film. I think you're in a good spot if you know how to be economic with your dialog moments and choose the right moments to devote more screen time to than others. You already mentioned your desire to keep a lot of the heavy 'BIG PLOT POINTS' vague for this short film, so I think you'll do well. As long as you keep in mind this is more of a character-driven narrative and not the start-up to a much longer, overarching storyline, you're do splendidly.

Anywho, time to share some of my silly lore related to my characters involved in my big overarching comic project.

I'll start off with these three guys: Velmont and his Vanguards.

Velmont first:

“A ruthless warlord from a continent beyond, he sought a new kingdom in lands untouched by kings. His eyes set upon the mysterious Countryside, a wilderness caped in woods and mountains, with only a pocket of humanity inhabiting it. Velmont planned an invasion for two years, galvanizing his forces and gathering reconnaissance from his right-hand Crypt. Eventually, he invaded the Countryside, slaying, pillaging, and capturing its inhabitants. Velmont’s iron fist strangled the Countryside for twenty long years until a tremendous force awoke: the Titans. These Titans roused Faustian pacts with the enslaved inhabitants and malformed them into formidable monstrosities known as Denizens. They overwhelmed Velmont’s forces and usurped him from power. Velmont lost his kingdom, his army, and his left arm to the Countryside. Blaming Crypt for his usurpation, he sentenced his right-hand to a mortal punishment and left him behind. Velmont’s thirst for power eventually led to his own Faustian pact with a Titan below the loathed Countryside. Lovingly known as his Beloved Queen Lila, she gave back most of what he lost from the Titans above. He now ‘rules’ the winding ossuaries beneath the Countryside, gifted a new army, and a fiery parasite as his ‘arm’ and mark to his Beloved Queen Lila.”

They're essentially trophies from past and present battles against the Denizens. Denizens themselves vary into five groups, with this particularly group they're wearing to be the dominant one and lycan-related in nature. Thanks for your input, Keeper! It's funny that you mentioned Berserk, as though I haven't read/watched it yet, I've heard it's influenced by my favourite book of all time: Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun, which is one of my greatest influences.

In the full story, there will be some in-depth characterization regarding the Knight and his relationship with the protagonist, not to mention his conflicting feelings of nostalgia towards a mis-remembered past. As the story progresses, he'll become less and less 'human', giving into the power of the Elder God, though he'll eventually be met with a chance to redeem himself. Think of him as a mix of a slasher film villain with the dark knight trope. He believes that he's making things better, serving the 'one true god', but not all is lost.

Now, the way I've planned it out so far, the short will be around 5-10 minutes, probably on the lower spectrum. It's basically an end-of-semester project, but I hope to expand upon it once I find a team of trustworthy animators. For now, it'll just be a storyboard animatic with a soundtrack. I'm considering doing it in a 'narrated' style, where there'd only be one voice, narrating the events and all dialogue, sort of like some scenes in Sin City.

Coincidentally, I've done a few animated shorts but nothing amazing, just literally puppet warping my drawings, lol. I even played tracks from the game Dante's Inferno over them. Idk, not the main focus in my work, but it was a lovely experience. I'll be taking another digital art class this semester, so I'll hopefully produce some better video work this year.

I did that with a short film by voicing one of my characters and having them recount events from past experiences. If anything it was a proof of concept for the current direction of my work: telling character-driven stories. But y'know, in the form of comics instead.

If nothing else, narration is very economic when you don't have the finances to pay a voice actor. Mind you, you might find one who likes to do purely for the artistic involvement.

Now if you mean the first issue, I'm nearly finished with it. I penciled in page 17 and 18 tonight, and plan to pencil in the last two pages tomorrow night. The comic's been an ongoing project since May when I wrote up the script and made out rough drafts, and this month's been a cycle of drawing two pages for two days and then inking one page per 4 days. I still need to draw and ink the cover page, back cover, and interior pages after the main pages and then figure out how to scan them on an 8.5x11 scanner and clean them up in Photoshop.

That's my long-winded way of saying it'll be ready this mid-July, haha.

The concept reminds me of the Crusades when knights would travel to the Middle East to pillage and kill innocent lives purely for the false promise of having their sins absolved and granted a seat in Heaven. A rather overused concept when it's bare bones to its original source, but I like that your idea isn't necessarily that but one fitting into it.

Good art is only as effective as the story imo, but I've enjoyed silly nonsense like Kill La Kill, so... lol. I think if you've got a crew of artists/animators who can envision that descriptive world in your passages, you'll have few issues.

Well, I only have a DA account outside of /x/. I used to post on art sub-forums, but those days are long passed me. Otherwise, 4chan's /x/ has been my main outlet outside of showing my work in RL. In terms of showing it here, yeah, I don't see why not. It's not like I don't have the original copies and whatnot, so I'm not that worried showing material I might want to sell on a later date.

Actually, I formatted the page dimensions so they will print at a 'zine/minicomic format (about 5.5 inches by 4.25 inches). It's the beginner comic's technique my comic-making professor taught my class. I plan to sell them locally to anyone interested in them (online purchases too once I understand the gist behind it.) That first comic I storytimed probably be $5 while my current one be $10. My professor said anything between 20-30 pages for a minicomic is usually sold for $10, so it's a nice start. I've yet to make a profit with my work, so I'm not picky, lol. (I still live with my folks, so I can't really complain.) I'm more into the exposure than the money atm.

That crusades comparison is spot-on, lol. The Knight actually has the most in-depth backstory of the characters so far, which is why I want the short to focus on him. Years before the main story, he was almost a brother to the main character, studying together at an 'academy' and both having some interest in the occult and dark knowledge in general. This interest led him to be manipulated by eldritch forces, however, once the main character made new friends and sort of left him behind.

Eventually, he would reluctantly set up a ritualistic massacre at this academy, killing almost all students and summoning the Elder God (who is implied to have planted life on earth in order to consume it when it became sufficiently advanced), hoping to be spared alongside his old friend.

This would lead to a fight with the main character and a few other survivors, as the academy burns down. The Knight would lose this fight, but wouldn't die, as it's implied (but not outright explained) that the Elder God has granted him immortality until his will has been carried out. This leads to him being institutionalized for a few years, and preparing for the coming apocalypse, turning into the true "Eldritch Knight". Once the Elder God's reaping finally begins, he escapes, and is tasked with finding and killing his old friend in order to prove himself worthy to serve the God.

Almost none of this information will actually make it into the short film, but it's sort of like the "story bible" that I use to keep track of character motivations and relationships.

I'm in love with all things related to Area 51. I even wrote a spec script once (it's lost now) shortly after finishing the original Deus Ex, about special ops agents with psychic powers in the near future, and a lot of the action took place there. I know that in real life it's probably just a weapons testing facility, but the potential for storytelling is amazing.

I've been working on this for over 6 years, so I have a lot more background details than could ever make it into the story itself. This actually began as a 'movie' idea, back before I realized how impossible that would be. Now I'm organizing it as a trilogy of novels, written like a sort of 'oral history book' from a post-apocalyptic future, with mythological elements. The whole backstory I mentioned would actually be the missing first book of this series, which would be referenced in parts, but never fully revealed during the story itself. I think that having readers piece together the past from small bits of information is more interesting than just telling them everything.

But I'm honored that you're interested, I hope to one day have this pet project take off in the public eye, but it's far from done. And I think having a story bible helps keep things consistent. Your character stuff so far is pretty much that, though, which is good.

I actually really love Event Horizon, but that film was BUTCHERED by the studio. From what I've read, there's abot half-an-hour of stuff missing, and almost no chance of it ever getting a director's cut. Apparently, most of what was cut went into detail about character motivations, and a lot of terrifying imagery. This was meant to be Hellraiser levels of fucked up, but the movie was basically castrated. In any case, this might mean that your alternate version of the film might not be that far off.

Even so, I think it's a chilling ride, though I have soft spot for horror in space. The weird thing is, I'm not a fan of Paul W. S. Anderon's work, this is my one exception.

I absolutely love cosmic horror. It puts you in a state of fear unlike any other because there are no rules or parameters in space, anything can happen. Alternatively, deep sea horror works just as well for me.
It's kinda sad knowing that so much was taken out of the film. I kinda felt like they brushed a little to lightly over the gore sequences.

Cosmic Horror is where it's at, as it's the most absolute form of terror in fiction. What's really horrifying is that it's a rational fear. I just love the Lovecraftian imagery of a lone human being being confronted with the awful truth of the universe, with elder beings so old and advanced that they are gods to us. This kind of thing is what inspired my own story, but I'm not as nihilistic as Howard was. I think that, when faced with the truth of our meaningless existence, all that's left is for humanity to dust itself off and start helping one another, as there's no 'greater being' out there intent on doing that for us.

And speaking of deep sea horror, I'd love to see big-budget adaptations of Shadows Over Innsmouth, and even Dagon and Call of Cthulhu. My dream horror film would be a near-three-hour anthology epic (it should be a period piece as well), featuring various Lovecraftian stories being 'discovered' by an investigator, culminating in the awakening of Cthulhu. I have this image in my head of a possible final scene, set in modern times, years after the investigator has been driven mad by his new-found-knowledge, in a busy New England street, with people just walking around, carrying out their lives. Then, some of them start to look to the sea, as something monstrous rises in the horizon, bringing about terrible waves and even storm clouds above. It would slowly become bigger and bigger as it approaches, and the people would begin crying, comitting suicide and clawing their own eyes out. As the thing gets closer, smaller creatures begin to crawl out of the sea, and it would end with a brief yet ominous glimpse of Cthulhu's power, as if it could happen any day now. I'd also love to have this set to an orchestral version of Metallica's Call of Ktulu. It should then abruptly cut to the end credits.

Anyway, I know we're probably not going to ever see a movie like this, but a guy can dream, right?

The hotel which will appear very soon has an interesting design I like. A mix of the Great Northern mainly in exterior and the Black Lodge for the interior. Once we got to that point we've basically finished the intro aside from introducing the giant (hotel manager) and the dwarf (bellhop). After that I'll probably jump right into some two sentence horror and other stuff that takes a step away from the big narrative of the series.

Don't sweat the small stuff, your art has been consistently getting better, and in some of these the empty spaces actually help the narrative. Also, I love the deadpan delivery of 'whimsical lamps'. It's cool that the series will juggle legit scary things and silly stuff at the same time, without missing a beat.

And yeah, I think that if I don't get the funds and make that movie myself, we'll never get the Lovecraft adaptation that we deserve. Although, Del Toro has been trying to make his Mountains of Madness for years now, maybe one day he'll be able to do it. Ah yes... the initial "what if" of conceptualizing an overarching story. I loved how that was my fore thought whenever coming up with a new idea until I was 13-years-old and realized how implausible that was, lol.

On a side-note, I'm making headway with my current comic. I've began inking the last 4 pages (3 pages as of tonight), apart from my cover page, back page, and interior page(s).

It's funny how this comic started out with the safe 6-8 panels per page and slowly tinkered into more experimental paneling like small panels spaced between bigger one or having a drawing in a panel 'bleed' off the page. I have my fingers crossed they'll look good when I go to scan them.

Oh, and I'm planning to call the comic series "Faust Fall". It's actually a rather simple tittle on a conceptual level. I'm still pondering if it can have more than one meaning, but it's thus far been a singular one.

So the other day I got around to watching 'Splatter' and 'Some Kind of Hate' ,both comedic recommendations from a friend and I can say both were the best worst movie experience ever. Alternatively this morning I caught the 2011 version of 'Fright Night' and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I appreciated that it was a solid way of handling a modern day monster movie. Also, I rewatched Jaws and Scream 2 last night, and both are friggin' masterpieces. I've watched the first two and two was pretty rough at the end. The only movie I can think of at the moment that got me that bad was Cannibal Holocaust, but I haven't seen many super gory/snuff films. Interested in seeing three because I've already watched the first two and I'm curious as to whether or not it's possible to top the second one in terms of violence/gore.

I really like Jaws and as I've gotten older I've come to appreciate the Scream franchise a bit more. I've been watching the show with my sisters and it's decent. I was mainly concerned how they were going to hold suspense and keep me invested with a cast over a season and they did a decent job, but the most impressive part is the fact that they're attempting to keep an audience interested in slasher stuff over the course of multiple seasons instead of a 120 minute time frame. It's decent enough in my book so feel free to give it a shot.

The Scream series is my guilty pleasure. I can't bring myself to call it great television, but I can't stop watching. I've always loved the movies, though. I've had a poster of the fourth one in my room for half a decade now.

And it's only worth watching the third human centipede out of sheer morbid curiosity. I'd actually recommend viewing Kevin Smith's Tusk, as it's a fun comedic version of the same story, but is equally off-putting in my book. Jesus, that ending is haunting. Plus, it's the first part of a Canadian horror trilogy Smith is working on. Yoga-Hosers is coming out soon, which is part 2. The last one will be an homage to Jaws, featuring a killer moose that will eventually fight Tusk himself. Smith is a weirdo, but I like his stuff.

The best recent stuff I've seen was Stephen King's Cell (which got some horrible reviews, and I can't imagine why, as it's better than the book), and Hardcore Henry.

Uh, no. Only by the biggest stretch ever can you call it this. Yes, it kills a bunch of people, picking them off one by one, but it still hardly qualifies as "slasher". There's some other genre it fits in, whatever you'd want to call "People being hunted down by killer animal".

Anyway, Jaws is certainly a slasher movie. The first half more than the second, but the horror influences are quite clear, not to mention intentional.. From the POV camera, to the kill set up and general approach to the film, it's quite clear that Spielberg wanted to make this an aquatic slasher that slowly turns into something else, the only difference being a monstrous animal instead of a human murderer. I mean, come on, there are jump scares and throwaway slasher-fodder characters, this isn't a coincidence.

People tend to forget that Spielberg began as a horror director (though he retains horror elements in almost all of his films, especially Jurassic Park). What draws people away from this are the offset 'epic' narrative elements, as the protagonists begin their hunt for the shark ala brave knights conquering their own inner demons in order to face off against a 'dragon'. Not to mention the whole Moby Dick aspect of the second half.

In any case, people usually disagree with this classification because they think 'slasher' is a pejorative term. It's not, though the merit of Jaws lies not in its genre, or even how scary or thrilling it is, but in how Spielberg is the master or portraying human drama, and making us relate and cheer for all these characters.

When you watch the sequels, you root for the shark. When you watch the original, you cheer as Brody utters the infamous 'smile you son of a b-". That says a lot about how the right director can turn a simple slasher story into the movie that began the blockbuster craze.

(By extension, I guess you could say that it was a glorified slasher movie that opened the door for Star Wars, and every other blockbuster franchise out there, and I think that's pretty cool).

Not really. I still stand by my statement that the first sequel was bad, and even worse than I remembered, actually. Both Jason and Leatherface are killing for the same reason as the shark (territory in Jason's case, and feeding in Leatherface's). And again, the slasher element doesn't depend on the killer being human or not, or even the motives. Slashers are films revolving around the violent murder of various victims. If to you personally Jaws doesn't sound like a slasher, that's one thing, but you can't deny the intentions of the filmmakers.

I noticed the interesting debate into horror movies, so I was reminded of one I saw last year: David Linch's Eraserhead.

Has anyone else ever seen this film? The Surrealist aspects certainly bog the film's plot in symbolism, but I absolutely loved the atmosphere and the execution of Linch's allegories. The final sequence involving the baby will always stick with me. Pure, unhindered nightmarish shit, and it was glorious.

The guard and the maid found refuge from the debauched party in the cell blocks at the bottom of the ship. It was like another world, the music and screams of pleasure above them inaudible through layers of metal. Good question, it's set around the end of the 19th century, like 1870s-1880s. Specifically, it's during the pre-dreadnought age of naval technology and guns are cartridge-loading but not bolt action, sort of like the rifles the British use in the Zulu Wars. Breech-loading but not magazine fed, though early automatic weapons exist. Now, the very wealthy or brave have access to advanced, usually quite eldritch non-euclidean artifacts/technology, but since the focus of the story is on a lowly hired guard and a lowly maid, we won't see that right away. Any more questions would be great, it helps me flesh out the world that's been so far limited to the confines of the ship, the Purveyor.

The trip to the jagged shoreline was quick, the distance short, yet they had scarcely traveled half the length of it before the Purveyor was swallowed up by the fog. The Guard was perplexed, as they had easily seen the harsh features of the coastline from the ship - why could they not see the ship?

His sole comfort were the arc lamps burning brightly through the fog, marking the silhouette of the Purveyor. The eldritch sea could swallow up man, monstrosities of iron, but it could not dim electric lights. The Guard was unreasonably heartened to know that as truth as their motor launch scraped up against the rock, the lights of the Purveyor still visible. A greater comfort still was the portable arc lamp that they carried with them. To light the way, as the sun was dim through the haze - but also to mark their position to those on the Purveyor. If those on the ship could no longer see their light, they would fire off flares toward the coast to warn the landing party to return.

It was a great deal of fuss for a landing party of four guards to duly search for the passenger that had thrown himself off the side during breakfast as they lay at anchor - the Guard was certain he had seen the Head Clerk already marking down the passenger as 'DEAD" in the logbook immediately after seeing the landing party to mark down their absence in said logbook.

The Guard was glad, though, glad of all the fuss and toil. The utter madness that had seized the ship with attack of the Bloated Beast was not total - it had receded, and there were sound, proven strategies for survival underneath the boiling insanity.

The rocks were hard, but they were warm to the touch. The arc lamp cast shadows over the jagged surface, and it was utterly quiet as the four guards looked around, rooted in place.

Last post of the night. The major theme of the story - the proper beginning of which I'll start tomorrow - is the endurance of humans in the face of horror if they've got a buddy to share their torment. The passengers of the Purveyor are decidedly different shades of insane and dangerous - the old hands on the crew are fatalistic and withdrawn, and the new crew (hired guards and the retinues of the passengers, which includes the maid). Yet the main characters are pretty much normal humans, and I intend to explore that.

Also, the post above this one about the arc lamps is why I should read over my hasty accompanying story BEFORE I post it. "The rocks were hard" - pure literary genius right there, you saw him first on /x/.

Anyway, probably night for now. /x/ is a pretty cozy place, and relatively slow-paced to boot.

"EXT. COURTYARD - NIGHT

The bowman manages to hit him in the shoulder, and the Knight stumbles back. He does not fall, however, and merely stares back at the terrified guard, who then drops his bow and runs into the nearby barracks.

Recovering his cloak from the ground, now with fresh arrow-holes, the Knight moves towards the barracks. The camera pans up as he enters the tower-like wooden building, as we only hear the carnage that ensues inside. A few moments later, the Knight re-imerges in the rain, completely blood-soaked.

He then heads into the main castle, leaving a wet, reddish trail behind him in the makeshift structure."

I finished the script, but it still needs a lot of editing. I wrote the dialogue normally, but I guess the smart thing to do will be
to make the whole thing a voice-over by the Knight himself, narrating the events.

Mary steps out of the car, unsure of what she's going to say. She sees Krista in the distance sitting on a bench alone. She's looking into the distance furtively and Mary wonders what's on her mind. Knowing that Krista was her best friend and now they're almost strangers hurt a lot. As of late Krista had relegated Mary to the back seat, the back burner, the back row of the theater and she had no idea why. Hopefully the talk Mary planned out is exactly what they both need to get back to where they used to be. Mary stands next to her a car a moment longer, inhales deeply and begins the trek over to where Krista is sitting.
“Why the long face?” Mary asks playfully as she closes the gap between her and Krista. She knows Krista won't answer her but something had to be said to break the ice. Krista looks up sluggishly and has bags under her eyes. Lack of sleep maybe...but the depth of the tiredness in her eyes conveyed a different type of weariness. “Long face? One of us looks more like a camel I think.” Krista responds with a wry smile on her lips. Mary's worries about Krista were forgotten for the moment when she saw the twinkle in Krista's eyes during the response. Maybe this will work out, she thought, just maybe.

Krista, slowly and methodically gets up from the bench. Krista was always the loud, brash, in your face type and now without all her boasts, she seems so much smaller than Mary remembers. As they begin to walk, Mary giggles at the quip and asks “So what's new stranger?” Krista seemed as bored as ever and replies “Nothing much.” Anticipating Mary's follow up question she adds “My family's fine and school is good. 3.2 gpa. So far, so good” Although they went to colleges near each other, graduating had put a wedge in-between them.
“Well now that we got that out of the way, I guess we're done here.” Mary said sardonically. There's something about best friends that can't be lost over any period of time. Mary knew that and sh was hoping to tap into that through this conversation. After all she had big news for Krista. Krista and Mary walk in silence. Mary looks over “Krista, I miss the old times. I miss staying up late and talking about the guys we have a crush on. Or when we would watch disney movies til 5 am. I miss playing with the ouija board and pretending like we were Sabrina, the teenage witch. I want to go back to that.”
Krista flinches a little, as if hurt by the words. As the sun begins to set and lower, their pace begins to slow. Mary pays it no mind. Maybe Krista is tired or had a long day at work. Krista stares ahead into the distance and says slowly “I.....i would like that too, but things have changed. Not just between us. I know you're here to tell me something important. So can we please get this over with?”

Mary was taken aback. How did she know? Maybe she realized that Mary wouldnt just text her out of the blue she has too much pride for that. But to be so on the nose about it, was a little..unnerving. By now the sunset was fading away into a beautiful backdrop of violets, magentas and crimsons. If only Krista would step back and notice these little things like she used too. Mary put her hands in her pockets and shook her head “Well, Bill and I are finally tying the knot and moving in together. It's a big time in my life. Making all these crazy moves that we talked about as kids. It's just a lot to take in, in such a short amount of time. And I don't have my best friend like I used too.”
By this time sun was setting and Krista was walking noticeably slower.

I agree with all of this. The only thing is that I enjoyed ABC's of Death but only because it was absolutely trash. Really cheesy campy stuff, and mediocre horror films are my guilty pleasure.

Hey guys.

I've been busy the past day now, so I apologize for my lack of activity in the thread.

Good news though: I scanned in all 20 pages of my current comic. I still need to draw two interior pages (for decor and to avoid blanks on the printed version) and then ink those alongside my front and back covers, scan them, and finally, clean them up in Photoshop. Tonight, I'm gonna clean up my actual pages and work on the interior pages.

With that all in mind, I believe the entire comic should be ready to be storytimed here on July 10th.

Thanks. It feels good when I can finally recognize improvement myself. One thing I've oticed is that I project a lot into the things I draw. Like if I'm tired I'll draw my characters with a sleepy look or if I'm in a good mood characters will have bigger smiles and apparent my stuff is rounder when I'm at ease or happy.

Thanks, Pixel! But I couldn't have done it without your help, it really brought the story to life.

The raptor thing is actually called a Gandar in-story, but the Knight himself will ride a regular horse. Gandars start showing up once Desdinova's slow arrival beings tearing space-time into pieces. This will be the reason behind a lot of strange creatures and mutations in the post-apocalyptic world. However, it's unclear if this is a creature that comes from the earth's past, future or just an alternate present.

And the sword is one of my favourite aspects of the story. It's actually a broken piece of advanced alien weaponry, confused with a sword. The actual function would be more akin to an energy-assault rifle, but the characters don't know this. There will be nothing in the short film to suggest this, but the sword actually 'charges' over time, absorbing kinetic, solar (and every other kind of) energy, releasing it in devestating energy blasts, similar to lightning strikes. The Knight will be given his
as a gift, but the main character in the larger story will actually build his from scratch, with the help of another mysterious individual.

Anyway, I'll have to simplify a lot of this for the animatic, and eventually all this art will be discarded in favour of the work of actual artists, but I think things are progressing nicely. Anyway, you have to tell me later if you want to be credit as Pixel, or something else in the short, lol.

Piece of work for tonight, bit of a sample I think of what the basic quality of the comic will look like. Got a lot of concepts to do, I'm committing to this project.

Also, having poison ivy blisters all over your wrists/forearms/hands/fingers really sucks, man.

Picking up the pace, he rides off into the distance. We focus on the wooden castle and the many lights that decorate it and the surrounding farmlands. The lights flicker, and the shambling creatures of the night begin their ominous approach.

1. EXT. ROAD – DUSK

The ELDRITCH KNIGHT rides into frame on a dark horse. The silhouette of mysterious creatures observe him from the side of the road, hidden in the foliage. Ominous storm clouds mute the last rays of sun.

NARRATOR: It was on a stormy day I first encountered that strange settlement.

2. EXT. ROAD/FARMLANDS - DUSK

The Knight reaches a peculiar settlement, consisting of farmlands surrounded by short fences with blinking lights, and a large wooden castle in the center. A white structure can be seen within the castle, towering over everything else (wind turbine). There are strange-looking bodies piled around the fence, burned.

NARRATOR: Farmlands gathered around a castle, and in the center was the spinning white tree.

Jumping over the fence, the Knight dismounts his horse and walks through the farmlands, eventually stumbling upon a small shack. The shack is lit by strange lanterns, with wiring leading up to the roof, and then connecting to other shacks until it finally reaches over the castle walls, to the tree.

NARRATOR: There I find this dreary woman, a peasant.

Adjusting his cloak over his helmet, anticipating rain, the Knight steps forward. A young woman, dressed in rags, is fending off a skinny-looking male peasant, who appears to be trying to steal a basket. He flees when he notices the Knight.

The woman stares at the Knight.

NARRATOR: "You shouldn't be here," she tells me.
I explain that I am looking for someone.
She asks if I am a man of God. I answer "Yes."
"Are you here to save us?" She inquires.

The Woman's eyes turn to the castle, where the lights grow stronger as night slowly falls.

NARRATOR: I don't reply. She then directs me to her master. The so-called Lord of Light.

3. EXT. FARMLANDS/CASTLE GATES - NIGHT (LIGHT RAIN)

The Knight then departs, heading towards the castle gates. Thunder can be heard as a light drizzle begins. Other settlers eye him from a distance, curious but wary. It is completely dark now.

NARRATOR: I request an audience with the so-called Lord.

At the gates, the Knight beings knocking on the thick wooden walls. It begins to rain heavily.

NARRATOR: A guard answers, telling me that all inquiries will have to wait until the next day. I tell him that if the Lord intends on still having guards by tomorrow, he'll make an exception.

The gate slowly opens, revealing five angry guards in the courtyard. Two bows are aimed at the Knight’s head, the other men carry swords. The spinning tree stands behind them, with wiring that leads overhead into the castle itself and to the farmlands surrounding it.

NARRATOR: The unfortunate men that stand before me say that I am not welcome.

4. EXT. COURTYARD - NIGHT (RAIN)

NARRATOR: Neither are they.

The Eldritch Knight pulls back his cloak, revealing his armor and blade, and steps forward. The guards shudder. Finally, the bowmen prepare to shoot, as the others lunge forward.

The Knight pulls at his cloak as he moves, a distraction of sorts, confusing the bowmen who shoot right through it and miss him. He then strikes against the first guard, using him as a shield as he mutilates the others. Moving quickly, he then approaches one of the bowmen and stabs him.

The other bowman manages to hit him in the shoulder, and the Knight stumbles back. He does not fall, however, and merely stares back at the terrified guard, who drops his bow and runs into the nearby barracks.

NARRATOR: "What are you?" His eyes ask. I've seen the look before.

NARRATOR: His mind can’t handle the answer.
Repositioning his cloak, the Knight moves towards the barracks. The camera pans up as he enters the wooden, tower-like structure, as we only listen to the screams and carnage ensuing inside. A few moments later, the Knight re-emerges in the rain, completely blood-soaked.

6. INT. CASTLE - NIGHT

NARRATOR: I enter the heathen structure. I can smell the fear.

He then heads into the main castle, leaving a wet, reddish trail behind him in the cavernous structure.
Climbing a set of stairs, the Knight reaches the Lord's chambers, and forces the large doors open. Inside are all the remaining guards of the castle, wielding bows that are aimed towards him. Behind them, the Lord sits in a large chair.
The Knight steps inside, scaring the guards, who are intimidated by the arrow that still sticks out from his shoulder. The Lord gets up and walks towards him, signaling to the guards. He's a short, pudgy man dressed in heavy fabrics. Not exactly royalty, but in direct contrast to everyone else.

NARRATOR: The short, pudgy man presents himself as the Lord of Light. He asks me who I am, but I don't answer.
He asks again, and demands to know what motivated all this bloodshed.
I tell him that I'm looking for a man, and that his guards were uncourteous.
"Fair enough," he says, chuckling grimly. He then explains that he has long waited for one with my particular skills. One that might help defend their community against those who would conspire against their way of life. He boasts of the gifts of light that he provides to his ungrateful people, protecting them from the raging dark. I can tell he's afraid, but not of the things that walk in the night.
I say nothing. He then promises to spare me from the wrath of the guards, and to help me find whoever it is that I am looking for, if I swear loyalty to him and the tree.

I ask him about the spinning tree in the courtyard. He claims that it belongs to him. I ask if he was the one who planted it. He doesn't answer. “Then how do you know that it belongs to you,” I ask.
Angrily, he claims that this is irrelevant, as he's the only one who knows how to converse with the tree. As protector of these lands, the people owe him their gratitude.
I then ask why he hasn't shared this knowledge with the people, in order to ease his own burden. He tells me to consider what I have witnessed so far, regarding the character of these peasants. They would surely slay him, once he had outgrown his use to them, and that's why he needs me.
I nod in agreement. He smiles, and offers me his hand. I approach and tell him that they would not wish to kill him had he not given them a reason.
Outraged, he demands that I swear loyalty to him, or I shall be made an example of. He does not wish to help me.

The Knight pulls back his cloak, and touches his blade, testing the guards.

NARRATOR: "Would you dare to doom all these people to that which waits in the dark? Even if you could leave this room alive, I have already won," The Lord of Light bombastically claims.
"Arrogant fool," I tell him. "You are only a greedy child, wielding a long lost torch in the dark, as if it were his own."

Obviously offended, the Lord prepares to give the order. The Knight, however, is unshaken, and swiftly unsheathes his blade, decapitating the Lord before any of the guards can react.


NARRATOR: "You cannot deserve what you cannot understand. I pray that together you may find the knowledge to keep the light going. If not, a time of reckoning is upon you, as it was upon the old world," I tell them.

The room is in chaos as the guards begin a commotion. The common people are gathering outside, curious to know what has transpired. As the Lord's blood begins to pool on the floor, the Knight turns to leave.

NARRATOR: "You've doomed us all," I hear them whisper.

Well, I inked, scanned, and cleaned up the final page to my comic.

Just for the sake of showing, here's what the back cover looks like. Mind you, there's nothing very spoiler-worthy in this image apart from showing the backs of two characters in the comic. However, it's a much wider scene of the comic's setting that isn't as present in the comic itself.

I hope to refine that in the second issue when I get around to that.

Anywho, I might draw a figure I had in a dream a little while from now, but I'll be holding off from posting the whole comic till the next OC thread. Unless anyone disagrees otherwise!
