The Warp is all around us ever present and watching as if a black visceral echo of our shallow reality. It's nature, though beyond our comprehension, is seemingly that of chaos itself capable of perverting and corrupting any and all order which we call reality. It is that which exists beyond the edges of our known and ever expanding universe and yet is only a atom's distance from us at any given time in our daily lives. We feel it behind our eyes when we dream and taste it in our mouths before we die yet every morning when we wake or for those who have cheated death we never return quite the same person as when we left this plane of consciousness.

So how about a thread celebrating all things Eldritch and inconceivable through body horror, corruption and transformation.

>>
>>17836744
In the short story "the things" yeah he was. Not sure how canon that is though. As far as the movie goes some say he drank gasoline and that outed him as infected I've also heard that you don't see his breath in the cold and that also means he's infected.

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.
27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
>>
And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.
13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
>>
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

How is it? It's just an Alien. Do you consider Star Wars lovecraftian?

What in Lovecraft isn't just an Alien?

All the outer gods and old ones are aliens. The Mi-Go are aliens the Elder Things are aliens. Extra-dimensional and unworldly things are more of a novelty in the Lovecraftian universe.

The Horror of Lovecraft is not stuff from beyond the veil, but that the cosmos themselves are horror beyond imagination and that the tame mundane ecosystem of Earth which we naively assume to be typical is in fact a quaint novelty in the wake of the unimaginable horror which lurks out in the stars.

This is what "The Thing" encompasses, the unknown horror from beyond our local ecosystem. The fact that the story borrows so much from Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" only furthers this parallel and horror that not only is this extraterrestrial hostile and invasive, but that it's been here for hundreds of thousands of years waiting to be found.

In summation, you don't know what Lovecraft is because from your argument it would seem that you're under the impression that Lovecraft's fiction works much like Warhammer 40k with the Warp.
>>
>>17843774
1. Nothing in the OP mentioned the name "Lovecraft"

2. Read 'at the mountains of madness' then tell me what is or isn't "lovecraftian".

3. Learn what a "meme" actually is rather than simply just using "meme" as it's own incorrect usage of the term.
>>
>>17843774
I think it can count as Lovecraftian because Carpenter wanted it to be. I'd still argue against it, simply because all kinds of cosmic horror is called Lovecraftian today and Lovecraft didn't invent the genre, nor was he that influential in the high times of stories like that.
Many things we call Lovecraftian today are just typical to 1920s horror. You might find very similar things in Kafka's or Meyrinck's stories.
>>
>>17843778
Is Star Wars about Alien horror? No?

Well Lovecraft is. Lovecraft is essentially two things: Alien/Cosmic Horror & Pulp Sci-Fi.
>>
>>17843819
No. Because many of Lovecrafts major stories don't include Aliens, Cosmic horror or Pulp Sci Fi.
>>
>>17843826
name one
>>
>>17843828
The thing on the doorstep for example. Dagon, too. It would actually be easier to name the ones that include cosmic horror.
>>
>>17843828
Shadow over Innsmouth, too. There might be a reference I don't remember, but no major theme.
>>
>>17843831
Dagon is an alien old one and by proxy cosmic horror. Even then both stories are what would be considered pulp sci-fi of that era delving into both the horror of the unknown and speculative subject matter of the time.
>>
>>17843831
>>17843837
Dagon is an alien

And the Deep Ones are his spawn. The fact that they are not specifically acknowledged as such in the stories doesn't change the fact that they fulfill the exact same role that the creature in the Thing does. Something ancient and Unknown and something which invades or infiltrates humanity.
>>
>>17843831
>>17843837
I think you're confusing "setting" for "theme"
>>
>>17843838
Dagon was not considered to be an alien at the time it was written.
Calling pulp sci-fi Lovecroftian is just a too broad definition. You know that there were whole magazines full of other authors dedicatet to it? Rethoical question of course - but you see the problem. Calling a whole genre that had many influential authors "Lovecraftian" is giving him too much credit.
>>
>>17843842
Sorry, but you are going by Derleth's definition. For Lovecraft, Dagon was just a early version of Cthulhu. The alien idea came later.
>>
>>17843851
And what credit does he deserve then since pretty much everything he wrote borrowed from other author's fictional mythos and popular sci-fi trends of the time.

The only thing that was signiturely Lovecraft was the theme of dread and the unknown, which John Carptenter's Thing embodies perfectly.
>>
>>17843857
Not even that. The theme of dread of the unknown is the basic idea of horror.
>>
Personally, I'd apply a very close definition of Lovecraftian: Mythos stories and stories trying to copy it. However, that would exclude a lot of stories Lovecraft himself wrote. That's fine with me, since Lovecraft wrote a lot of things that weren't very unique and even tried to copy other authors. He also wrote a lot of crap he never wanted to see published. Those things can only be called Lovecraftian if you include clumsy writing and archaic expressions to the list.
>>
>>17843854
Even so Dagon still represents something ancient, unknowable and terrifying which the Thing was. Both are alien to man's understanding of nature and the world he lives in, both threaten the very foundation of what humanity is.

>>17843861
Pretty much, Lovecraft just took a bunch of stuff everyone else was already doing and combined in a manner which has a very loose and broad context which we swoon over after the fact, but was largely ignored at the time of his contemporaries. To say that John Carptenter's The Thing isn't Lovecraftian is just naive and projecting false significance onto Lovecraftian's collective works as it embodies everything that Lovecraft ever did.

I could understand people pissing and moaning about Ridley Scott's Alien being considered Lovecraftian (which there is a very strong argument for it being such), but since the Thing borrows pretty heavily from the setting and isolation of Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" there's really little room to doubt the fact.

In the end, any time someone bitches about something not being "Lovecraftian" it only ever ends in a pissing contest over who knows more about Lovecraft with everyone having concede in the end that there was really nothing that unique or signature about Lovecraft and most of what we think to be Lovecraft is actually based off much later works inspired by or in the same vein of his work.
>>
>>17843885
The question is: Does the thing really borrow that much from Mountains of Madness? It's based on the story "Who goes there" - does this story borrow from Lovecraft? I doubt it, I think it was idea simple enough to be invented several times.

About Dagon: Sure it does. I just argued, that it was neither an alien nor cosmic horror, so it couldn't apply for that definition of Lovecraftian.
>>
>>17843904
I say that it does and while all the superficial similarities may not be there, the core elements of the theme, tone and setting of The Thing are very signature of many of Lovecraft's works, particularly the common themes in Lovecraft's work of "horror of the unknown", "impotence of man via outside influence" and "uncertain/foreboding/aloof resolution". If these aren't lovecraftian then why consider anything Lovecraftian, hell the vast majority of Lovecrafts own writings aren't even Lovecraftian then.

As for the second point, Dagon is pulp sci-fi, at at least what would be considered such at the time.

But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;

7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:

8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)

9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.

Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord.

12 But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;

13 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;

14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:

15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;

16 But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the madness of the prophet.

17 These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.

18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.

19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.

20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.

21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.

22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

It deserves a reboot like Wolfenstein and Doom got. Quake seems to be the most serious of the lot, I want an intense alien horror action experience. If Bloodborne can mix action and cosmic horror, so can a new Quake game. But nah, arena shooter instead.

They scurry, they breed, they squeal, they gorge. A seemingly endless parade of furred beasts, gnawing through wood and clawing through dirt. He had always hated rats, ever since he was a baby, when one found its way into his crib with him. He blamed them for his deformities, though he knew deep down he had always been abnormal. From the moment he was born, his mother could barely look at him. She would leave him crying on his own for hours. And yet, the guilt of what happened to him when she left him alone, screaming with the rodent, was too much for her. Even as the healers tended to his wounds, she silently opened her veins and wept in her last moments.
>>
>>17859438

The church had given him a better home him than she could ever have done. They saw his ugliness as a test from the gods. No child deserved to be outcast, no matter how repulsive; to them, the flesh is merely a vessel for the soul within. Where others saw a monster, they saw purity. The people tolerated his presence only for their faith in the church. Had it been otherwise, they would have strung him up before he had even fully grown. He knew they wanted to with each disgusted glare.
>>
>>17859440

The lantern he held glowed with a soft light. Not fire, but a glowing point of light hanging unaided within its metal casing, casting his hunched shadow behind him. He carried the light of the church, to signify their divine blessing. No more than a mocking reminder of his own faults. While the church had always cared for him, they did not see him as an equal. He had no skill as a priest. No face that evoked trust in others. Even his studies were woeful, no better than a child. But he had one thing that drove him: he had his hate.
>>
>>17859443

The lord of the city himself had bestowed upon him the honour of rat-catcher, a title he had dreamt of as a boy on lonely nights. He would protect the city from the merciless rodents that tormented them. It was a task he took oh too keenly. He would go where others would not, in the sewers and dank places, down alleys and ditches, where no one else would be to fix their hateful stare on him. And he did his job well, for the most part.
>>
>>17859444

But now he was called out more than usual. The city was plagued by the beasts, in every food-store, in every latrine, and every dark corner. People grew sick from their presence, with great black boils erupting across their bodies. They smell of death was barely masked by the smell of incense to ward away the disease. Only the rich could afford such luxuries.
>>
>>17859449

When he was called to the body of a stable maid, found lifeless in her bed, he knew he had allowed things to go too far. Her once pretty face was carved with many small scratches. Her lips and eyes were gone entirely, chewed away by the voracious pests. But it was the wriggling, swollen stomach of the corpse would haunt him for days. Though not more so than the rats, as they gnawed their way out of her and burst forth, scurrying off into the morning light.
>>
>>17859454

The rat-catcher descended into the sewers, his poisons clinking in his satchel, his traps rattling by his side. He held his dim lantern aloft, peering through the dark, and ignored the horrific stench that rose up around him. All around him screeched rats, scattering as light fell upon them but never leaving any further than the shadows. They watched him intently.

I saw The Blob when I was around 9 or 10. I've seen it all the way through maybe three times. Still gives me nightmares. Everything about that movie is just as fucked up as possible to me.
Yet, I'm still compelled to watch it every now and then. Considering it has all of those effects on me, I say that makes it a pretty damn good horror movie.

Surprisingly the low budget works.

It has that sort of Saul of the Molemen feel but unlike Saul of the Molemen, its not a 15 minute long drivel of gross out humor. As it is trippy imagery.

Can we get more Eldritch puppetry going? Cause this shit is bomb
>>
>>17856336
Seconded. I enjoyed him for what he was, but was honestly expecting a really fucking good Lovecraftan design style boss. Like From made Bloodborne so they definitely have the skills to do it. I think the fall of Anor Londo would have been way creepier if they had given us a twisted eldritch creature that destroyed everything in its path. Not just Gwyndolin with a long tail rather than his snake cluster of tails.

Like being back in Anor Londo was a nice throw back to the fans of ds1, dont over pander to them for fuck sake D:

Uzumaki is decent. None of the body horror bothered me till the end, the last 2 chapters, didnt do anything different mind you, but I just felt sick after reading it. Granted I had the big ass tome version which had the complete story, so maybe it was from bombarding my eyes with 850 pages of body horror
>>
>>17843407
Yeah. It might've been better with some sort of special effects. The story described him as unnervingly cartoonish, with an unnatural cartoonish gait and a grin that should be impossible, or at the very least extremely uncomfortable, for a human.

It should've been the definition of uncanny valley. But in this he just looked like some retard. Not even uncanny valley in the slighest, just some silly jackass walking and acting like a spaz.

Man, there was a quest on /qst/ a few weeks back that was inspired by Lovecraft, I think it was Hoovertown Horror, and it was turning out pretty good. +1 love the opening. I wish the whole movie was a scene like this. I like how it starts off all enchanty and whimsical but then takes a brutal turn. But the music stays the same.

I really like the scene in the original vampire hunter d when he goes into the castle gets attacked by all those creatures and such.
