Our minds don't actually control our bodies. We are all guided by something and it telepathically gives us desires related to what we do so we think we are in control. Sleep paralysis is done to you on purpose as part of trying to make you aware of that.

Before our body enters REM sleep, it releases a chemical that keeps us frozen (which prevents us from acting out our dreams). Sometimes you'll wake up during that process. Your body will be frozen, but your mind will be wide awake. It often causes hallucinations if you panic. Also everything else that everybody said in this thread is bullshit.
