Our prisons and deathrow are literally overflowing with 90s era gangbangers who pulled shit like that. It still happens, but statistically violent crime in general peaked in the early to mid-90s, and has been sharply declining ever since.

That's not an entirely fair comparison though. American street gangs, usually are fucking nobodies. Outside of their hood they aren't shit. Mexican Cartels are highly organized, very wealthy, and they have effectively become modern feudal lords. The Italian mafia is more comparable, but the FBI effectively neutered them in the 70s and 80s. Today what remains are families that have either moved into the upperclass and stick with white collar/low-profile crime and are semi-legitimate businessmen (comparable to the Japanese Yakuza), or they are moving towards being just another penny ante street gang, if they aren't already there.
