I just watched this son of a gun. it's... it's incredible.
Why aren't we getting more horror films with this pacing and atmosphere?

2001: A Space Odyssey. Stanley Kubrick directed this movie rather artistically from the book. I would recommend reading the book first to make sense of the movie, otherwise the film might come across as too abstract and slow-paced.

The basic premise is that somewhere in the universe, sentient life arose, similar to man. These beings evolved and eventually progressed to immortality and traveling the cosmos, searching for other life. They created large black monoliths which advance the progress and intelligence of lifeforms across the universe.

In the story, there are three monoliths, one in Africa (anciently responsible for the dawn of man, through artificially increasing his intelligence), one on the moon (TMA-1; when dug up on the moon, it sends a radio transmission directly to Jupiter), and then there is a giant monolith in orbit around Jupiter, through which an astronaut (David Bowman) gets transported through the cosmos and turned into a super-intelligent "star-child".

You want atmosphere!!!

The PUSHER TRILOGY!!!

I recommend watching it drunk and high out of your mind for first viewings.

FEELS like Goodfellas meets Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas when it comes to atmosphere. These are the rawest movies Ive ever seen! Each movie revolves around a drug dealer in the worst week of his life and all their lives are interconnected. First movie is about a mid level drug dealer Frank owing big to Milo who is a high level dealer and star of the 3rd movie. Second movie is about Franks best friend Tonny (Mads Mikkelsen) 8 years later when he gets out of prison.

Were Mads Mikkelsen got his start.

Prometheus.

Could have been a much better movie, but I liked the concept of a more advanced alien race than man, all the while being more brutal, violent and primitive.

This

Althought the main story isnt really that much above average, Ive always though all the oddities in th film itself were interesting. Like the photos of native americans everywhere, the calumet baking soda can's off arrangments, among various other things.

The movie Room 237 goes into some good theories about this, although some of them are crack pot theories from stoners. My favorites would have to be that certain parts of the film kind of "align" when playing the film forward and backward overlapping each other. The other is that it was a vehicle for Kubrick to admit he faked the moon landing and what his consequences would be if he told anyone ever again, while not actually coming right out and saying it

>>
>>17798606
I think it's because pacing goes hand in hand with atmosphere. It's REALLY hard to make a scary atmosphere that doesn't feel cliche or over the top.

The Thing is a god tier horror film but even it has a lot of technical flaws that are glaringly obvious but don't make the movie less enjoyable.

I think Rosemary's Baby is another good example of a great horror film but I think the ending is super cheesy.
>>
>>17799426
Fun fact, King actually hated Kubrick's Shining.. so he made his own.. which was pretty much shit. The only thing it did right was Jack was creepy from the start in Kubrick's, but in King's he started out sorta normal and got stranger as the movie went on.

Lord of illusions a Clive Barker movie, I liked it.
>>
>>17798606
I hope you enjoyed it. Because Hollywood will never make another one like it. If you noticed closely, the cast was all male. Which allowed the movie to flow more smoothly along the story line. There wasn't a token female character and some bullshit story of her own to slow down the pace of the movie. With PC the was it is now, at least half the cast will need to be female and have their own subplot about their periods and eating ice cream or some shit.
>>
>>17801919
Yeah that movie is sick! Reading the Scarlet Gospels the latest Hellraiser book and the detective from Lord of Illusions is the main character. Haven't got far yet but I think I heard its about the Cenobite Hell realm going to war with another Hell realm!

KUDOS TO YOU, ANON.

I actually owned this movie a while back, and really loved it. The Seth Green monologue scene really stuck with me for some reason, and you can't go wrong with mr. Re-Animator himself. This is one of the best Lovecraft movies that isn't actually an adaptation of Lovecraft's work.

It's not for everyone, though.

Pic very much related.

Normies will complain about the lack of "in your face" (jump) scares and lack of clear meanings but the movie's a slow build up of tension, fear and paranoia. Doesn't rely on gore or a boogeyman figure to scare. The visuals, music and pacing are what really set The VVitch apart from other recent horror movies, and I think in time it'll be looked back on as a classic.

Only true qualm I have with the movie are the shit-thick accents.

Except that the book based on the screenplay for the movie.

The book was basically written (by Arthur C. Clarke, who also helped write the screenplay) to help people understand the movie. You're supposed to watch the movie, read the book, and then watch the movie a second time to get the most out of the experience.

feel free to watch it sometime; I caught it on Kodi using Specto

Off the top of my head A Tale of Two Sisters and Perfect Blue are psychological asian horrors/mindfucks. I just recently bought 964 Pinocchio which isn't as scary as it is body horror, ambient cyberpunk exploitation (still good though).

For general surreal horror I'd rec The Holy Mountain, Enemy,Pan's Labyrinth and Funny Games.

>>17810425
l8 response here but i'm glad you enjoyed it. i was thoroughly surprised at the quality of it, apparently the material's pretty historically accurate.

don't know how recent you'd like but these have all come out in the last year or so:

Goodnight Mommy (austrian)
Taking of Deborah Logan
The Gift (more suspense/psychological)
The Skin I Live In (spanish)
Enemy (again more mindfuck/psychological)
Starry Eyes

Oldfag /x]bro here, and on top of a lot of great suggestions in this thread, I have a couple that are
*sort* of /x]-friendly, but not in a really overt way, although I think that's going to change as the movies progress.

Man of Steel and Batman V Superman.

This didn't really click for me until after BvS, but they're doing something really cool with magic and belief. I'm going to do my best to explain what seems to be happening,

Man of Steel isn't your typical superhero movie. It's Superman's origin told as an alien "First Contact" scenario. In the first flashback with Pa Kent, you see him hear the neighbor lady refer to what Clark does during the bus crash as being "an act of God," and immediately take off to find Clark and set him straight. Later on, Perry White asks Lois, "Do you know how people would react if they knew someone like this was out there?"

We see the answer to Perry's question, an answer that Jonathan also correctly predicted, in imagery throughout the rest of the movie - humanity looks at Superman and the other Kryptonians as something more than human and predictably tries to make a god out of their "savior." That's only touched on briefly in MoS, but it's all over BvS. What's more, it's not just Christian imagery, There's plenty of straight-up solar deity imagery as well.

"OK, so E.T.s are definitely /x] material, but where does the magic enter into it?" you might be asking. More in next post.

In BvS, we start seeing people react to Clark with what can only be described as religious awe. We're used to seeing people cheer and wave at Superman, not reach out to touch him like he's some sort of religious icon. He figures out what's happening and starts trying to think his way out of the unwanted deification, but never gets the chance.

Now here's where the magic comes in. For the first time in modern history, there's a god-like being walking openly among mankind. Not everyone thinks of him as a god, at least not consciously, but all that belief is a potent thing, and I believe that's what we're going to see going forward in these movies: an "Heroic Age" and a resurgence of magic in their world brought on by all that focused belief in a man who doesn't even want to be thought of as a god.

because due to the success of Halloween, most horror filmmakers began to favor jumpers over pacing and marketable formula and color filters over originality and filmmaking skill. When Saw hit the box office, it became even worse.

Now bullshit like Insidious is considered the peak of American horror cinema only because it has a ridiculous amount of jump scares.

>Why aren't we getting more horror films with this pacing and atmosphere?
Hollywood in general isn't suited to horror film-making.

See, Hollywood likes too things; shooting the money and big stars. This works for spectacle driven action or intense, glossy drama, but horror inherently requires subtlety and a degree of realism within your lead characters. So what Hollywood wants to do is have you focus on the effects and stars, while what makes horror films work is when you're not looking directly at the monster, and instead its presence is merely suggested.

It's why the first half of the Descent is far better than the second. The first half is about isolation and atmosphere while the second is based much more on fighting the monsters and big, bloody action sequences.
